COURSE SYLLABUSOPERATIONS MANAGEMENT : MSC 525M

Course Description :MSC525M covers the scope and responsibilities of the operations management or value-creating function: planning, organizing and assembling of resources as well as the directing and
controlling of operations and activities in both the manufacturing and service organizations. Thecourse involves a discussion of strategic, operational, and tactical decisions in OM andintroduces the student to trends and recent development in this field. An online LearningManagement System, MOODLE will be a complementary medium of course materials, classinteraction and submission of deliverables.
Objectives/Values :MSC525M is designed to enable students to appreciate the importance of managing the
processes involved in converting and allocating resources in an organization and to relate thesignificance of the OM function with the other functional areas of business. The methodologiesto be employed in the course also aim to introduce students to the common OM relatedproblems, concerns and trends; and to develop among the students the managerial ability of

REQUIREMENTS/ POLICIES
1. There will be one long exam (FINAL EXAM), which will seek to determinethe students attainment of the course objectives.
2. The exam will be a take-home and will be submitted in the FinalExamination folder in Moodle.
3. Please observe the deadline. No make-up examination will be given. Agrade of 60 will automatically be given for non-submission.
II. DELIVERABLES (45%)
Throughout the course, there are expected deliverables from the student in theform of participation in discussions on topics that will be assigned by theprofessor, reaction papers (lengthier formal submissions), assignments such asSimulation Exercises, group reports and term papers. These are spelled out foreach session and students are expected to comply on time. These are to besubmitted as instructed. For time-limited assignments, late submission will bepenalized by 5 points per day of delay. Details of each deliverable are as follows:
A. DISCUSSIONS (15%)Discussions of major topics and cases will be the main medium forclass interaction. Students are expected to participate in thediscussions called for by the instructor. Assessment of the qualityof a students contributions in the discussions is based on theDiscussions Rubric attached to this Syllabus. Student activity ismonitored and results of monitoring will form the basis for grading.
B. INDIVIDUAL CASE ANALYSES. REACTION PAPERS,ASSIGNMENTS and GROUP REPORTS (30%)
