that day, filmed a PSA to raise awareness about the mission. v

The last few months
have been quite exciting
for us at MCH Foundation
as we continued moving
forward with Together
For The Children, The
Campaign For Miami
Children’s Hospital. During
this holiday season, we had
several prominent faces
visit our hospital, including
our newest Celebrity Ambassador, television personality
Raul “El Gordo” De Molina, who took an emotional tour and
met several patients. We have great news concerning the
construction, we are close to completing the expansion and
renovation of our Emergency Department (ED) which includes
72 state-of-the-art exam rooms and Florida’s only freestanding
pediatric trauma center, the Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family
Pediatric Trauma Center. The ED is a gift to our community
being made possible by our Together Campaign. We are also
ready to start “going vertical” with the construction of the
Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion, a 212,000 square-foot facility
that will enhance the care environment at the main hospital
campus. Once completed, the new space will include the latest
medical technologies and additional family-friendly amenities to
support intensive and acute care patients and their families.
As an international institution that treats children from all
around the world, including more than half of Latin American
descent, cultural awareness is at the heart of everything we do,
resulting in more effective treatments and better outcomes for
our patients. Also, technology permeates everything we do,
driving a sustained record of innovations and medical firsts,
including novel diagnostic technologies; minimally invasive
and non-invasive surgical techniques; and our leadership in
Telehealth. But above all, we are focused on providing hope for
our families and patients. This is what we do best! Join us as we
come together for the children to continue providing lifelong
hope, health, and happiness in 2015 and beyond.
Fondly,
Lucy Morillo, Esq.

With more than 50 bake stands
participating from Boca Raton to
Homestead, the inaugural Bake a
Difference event, organized by our
President’s Cabinet, proved to be a
real success! On Saturday, Nov. 22,
the community came together and
gave away baked goods in exchange
for a donation to Miami Children’s.
It was especially inspiring to see
little ones manning the stands and
carrying our message of hope to their
customers. This community initiative
raised more than $31,000 to benefit
Miami Children’s Hospital and its
Comprehensive Epilepsy Program,
throughTogether For The Children,
The Campaign For Miami Children’s
Hospital.
Supporters registered to host
a stand through our website and
selected a location. Organizers
provided them with t-shirts for the
group, and the community joined
to support our cause. At the end
of the day, participants gathered
at the hospital’s main campus for
a celebration and turned in their
donations. This was possible thanks to
the hard work of the members of the
President’s Cabinet, whose primary
mission is to raise funds and awareness
and to educate the community on
the importance of Miami Children’s
Hospital in the local, regional, national
and international healthcare arena. v
In an effort to make
our patients feel more
comfortable during the
holidays, Miami Children’s
organized its annual Holiday
Toy Drive to collect new,
unwrapped toys. Thousands
of companies and individuals
participated in this year’s toy drive, which raised over
$200,000 worth of toys and countless smiles for our
patients at Miami Children’s Hospital. Also, MCYA member,
Taylor Pena worked with First Residential Services to bring
over $10,000 worth of toys! Thank you to everyone who
helped bring a smile to our patients! v

One comment often heard is, “I want to help children, but I may need my money in the
future.” Most people are concerned about financially caring for themselves throughout their
lifetime. Many of those same people feel a need and obligation to help children receive the
medical care they need and deserve. Here’s how:
• Leaving money under your will means you have access to all your assets
during your lifetime.
• You may leave a flat dollar amount or a percentage of the assets which remain in
your estate after your final expenses are paid.
• You will be helping children well into the future.

We rounded out the first year of the Patient of the
Month initiative with a deeper understanding and
appreciation for the experiences of our patients at
Miami Children’s Hospital. Each month we delved into
a different family’s story, sharing not just their medical
journey, but also their emotional one.
In September, we met twins Ashley and Samantha
who share everything, including a diagnosis of acute
myeloid leukemia. Their treatment at MCH has been
made easier thanks to Music Therapy. Watch their story
at mchf.org/ashleysamantha.
Following the twins, we featured Christian who was
born with a rare heart condition. At just three days old,
he underwent his first open-heart surgery, marking the
beginning of his three-step treatment plan. Watch
Christian’s story at mchf.org/christian.
Finishing out the year is Connor’s story, detailing
the hardships his family faced after he was born
unable to breathe, from being placed on ECMO
to undergoing therapy to go home. Watch
Connor’s story at mchf.org/connor. v
