Shepherd’s Voice 3

By Pastor Paul Bodin, Interim Pastor

God’s beloved people,

If you were at worship last Sunday, April 26, you heard my announcement: Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gil-lette, Wyoming, has called me to serve as their senior pas-tor, and I am accepting.

My last day at Good Shepherd will be Sunday, May 31. As we prepare to leave, I am confident that you are now poised to move forward from strength to even greater strength. God is preparing somebody to serve as your pastor in the next chapter of your ministry. You have chosen an out-standing Call Team; they are working carefully to follow the Spirit’s guidance. As you pray and seek together, God will be with you to lead you to your next partner in ministry.

In the meantime, President Paul Brosy and the rest of your Governing Board will be working together with the staff to provide a smooth transition for this congregation. Pastor Nancy Feniuk Nelson, the Bishop’s Associate, will also help the Governing Board, the Call Team and the staff prepare for the weeks between my departure and the arrival of your new pastor. Good Shepherd will be well led and well cared for.

Cherie and I would appreciate your prayers as we prepare for this big change in our lives. We will be packing and planning for the next several weeks. On May 1–3 I will at-tend the Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly in Salt Lake City to be introduced to the Synod; Cherie will join me there and we will travel to Gillette on May 4–6 to work on finding hous-ing. I will be back here in the office on May 7. We will take the first two weeks in June to make the actual move, and I will begin my duties in Gillette on June 15.

Gillette is a mining, energy, and ranching center in far north-east Wyoming, between the Bighorn Mountains and the Black Hills. If you plan a trip to Devil’s Tower, Mt. Rush-more, or Sturgis you will likely drive through Gillette. If you pass through, please stop in to say hello!

I will be sad to leave Lutheran Church of the Good Shep-herd. It has been a privilege and my great delight to serve as your interim pastor for these eleven months. Cherie and I have found many good friends and a warm, supportive community here. You will remain in our hearts and in our prayers.

Grace and Peace,

PASTOR’S MESSAGE In April, the Call Team submitted our Minis-try Site Profile to the Sierra Pacific Synod. We want to thank everyone who helped contribute to the profile with their words, attendance at events, and most im-portantly, prayers.

We now are in the second phase of the call process. The Synod will review our Site Pro-file and make it available for potential candi-dates to review and declare their inter-est. We should have a list of candidates by late May, at which point the interview proc-ess will begin with the goal of presenting a candidate to the congregation in the early summer.

As always, we will update you on our pro-gress and welcome questions along the way.

Thank you, and God bless.

National Alliance on Mental Illness Presents In Our Own Voice Sunday, May 17, 12pm, Shepherd Hall

May is Mental Health Month, and on May 17th, Good Shepherd has the privilege of hosting In Our Own Voice, a program of National Alliance on Mental Ill-ness. This is a presentation by two people who live with mental illness talking about their lives, past and present. The presentation is part personal story, part video, and part question-answer session, and is appropriate for family, friends, professionals, or any-one touched by mental illness. Presenters’ first-hand accounts will enrich understanding of how people with serious mental illness cope with symp-toms, treatment, and the ignorance and stigma sur-rounding their condition. Following up on the Lenten focus on homelessness, one of the present-ers will speak about her work among the homeless. Having been homeless herself, she has particular compassion for the homeless mentally ill. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn and care.

Miss Becky:

Miss Becky is the closest thing to a fairy god-mother I may ever know…she can do magical things! Pr. Carl gifted Kids Community a (very prolific!) Spider Plant last June and with some fairy dust, a lot of dirt, water and patience, Miss Becky grew that little plant into more than 200 spidey ba-bies! She is my hero! She can take barren and create abundance! She can take worn out and make it fresh and new! We love you, Miss Becky!

ADVOCACY We’ve all seen those books titled, “[fill in a topic] for Dummies” that represent that after you’ve read the book on a particular topic, you’ll know enough to get by. There’s a similar approach to public policy, and you don’t even have to buy a book! The wonderful people at the State of Nevada Legis-lative Counsel Bureau provide staff support to our Legislators. Their job is to do the research and mar-shal information so our elected officials can make sound decisions. All their reports are on the Legis-lative website, and it’s available for anyone. If you want to come off to your friends as a full-on policy wonk, check this out. Find the Legislative home page on the state web-site: http://www.leg.state.nv.us/. Look at the left-hand corner, in the circle; you’ll see Research/Library. Clicking there will take you to a page say-ing “Welcome to the Research Division,” and there’s a ton of interesting stuff to check out there. But go to the left side and click on “Publications of the Re-search Division.” That opens up more choices, and the hot topics are flagged with buttons marked “New.” Choose “Research Briefs and Issue Papers” and you can read up on even controversial topics such as firearms and “vaping.” These two were just published in February 2015. For a really quick read, go back to the “Publications” menu and choose “Fact Sheets.” These are two or three page rundowns on medical marijuana, the pre-vailing wage law, drones, and more. If you’re into statistics or little-known facts, there are other fact sheets you’ll love. The Legislative Counsel Bureau’s main function is to ensure that Legislators are informed, but your tax dollars pay for all their research, and there’s no rea-son not to make use of it. There is probably no other place you can find such unbiased, profes-sional information on topics that affect us all. An informed electorate is one of the pillars of our de-mocracy, and LCB makes it easy to be informed. The ELCA Social Statement on Church and Society says “God works through the family, education, the economy, the state, and other structures necessary for life in the present age. . . . This church must par-

ticipate in social structures critically, for sin also is at work in the world. . . . Christians also exercise their calling by being wise and active citizens. Christians need to be concerned for the methods and content of public deliberation. . . .” The Legislative Counsel Bureau can certainly help us all fulfill that obligation.

Shared Harvest

Assembly at Good Shepherd | May 17, 1pm

Shared Harvest is a joint ministry of several local Lutheran churches who bring food once a month to working-poor families. They deliver up to 80 bags of groceries each month. Bag assembly is at 1pm, May 17, here at Good Shepherd. Our food barrel will be in the Welcoming Space the week prior to and the day of our collection Sunday. Shopping list for May:

Cold Cereal

Canned Fruit

Powdered Milk Packets

Deodorant

Bar Soap Call or text Jane Knipmeyer (762-0940) if you can assist with this important ministry.

2nd Mile Giving

Mt. Cross Lutheran Camp | Sunday, May 17

Every month on the third Sunday we take a special offering called the “2nd Mile Offering” which is over and above the regular offerings received. Each month we focus on a different ministry in our Synod. The May 17 offering will be distributed as follows:

1/3 to Mt. Cross Lutheran Camp 1/3 to serve poor people locally (Project

Lazarus) 1/3 to serve poor people worldwide (ELCA

Hunger Appeal)

Upcoming Ministries: June: Lutheran Office of Public Policy (CA) July: Rwanda Companion Parish August: LEAN September: Disaster Relief

Lenten Collections 2015 For our Lenten theme of “Connections”, we collected some of the most needed clothing items for the homeless in our community. Once again, the gener-osity of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd members was overwhelming! We collected a total of 488 items of clothing including:

74 - Pants & Jeans 66 - Shirts 23 – Thermal garments & under shirts 23 - Sweatpants & leggings 101 – Underwear 35 - Bras & Sports Bras 131 - Socks 21 - Gloves 14 - Ski Hats

All the donated clothes were in very good, clean, wear-able condition and a large number of items were brand new with tags at-tached. It is going to be a joy to hand out these very needed and requested items at Pro-ject Homeless Connect next year! Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to our Lenten ser-vice project to help those with the greatest of needs in our community.

Social Ministries Team As Maribeth and I were carrying, counting and box-ing up all the donated clothing (488 items in all!) from our Lenten collections, I felt blessed to be part of such a generous and giving congregation. When-ever we ask, our congregation responds. Your car-ing makes a difference in people’s lives. Through our acts of service and giving, we truly do serve as the “hands and feet” of God. Thank you to those who responded so generously to this campaign and to so many others.

As we were boxing up all the clothing items, I also thought about how much more we could accomplish with a team of dedicated people working together on our church’s social ministries efforts. While the con-gregation always responds generously to collection and service projects that I identify, it feels like the important work of social ministries is something that should be shared. As Christians, we are encour-aged to serve and to work together in community for the betterment of all. Working together, we can ac-complish so much more than any one person. There are a number of individuals in our congrega-tion who possess the gift of a servant’s heart and the passion for making a difference. I would really like to gather a few of these people together to form a Social Ministries team that will work together to identify needs in our community and ways that our church can serve in an even greater capacity. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, please contact [email protected].

Welcome, Maribeth Doerr!

Good Shepherd is pleased to announce that we have hired Maribeth Doerr to become our new full-time Office Coordinator. She has been our half time coordinator since Erika left at the end of December. After Elsie moved in January, she stepped in to do both jobs! After working with her for several months, the staff, volunteers and key leaders all agreed that she would be a great fit for our office full-time. This also makes one less per-son for our new pastor to adjust to! If you have not met her yet, please drop by the office and say hello to her! She worships at Good Shepherd at the early service and serves as deacon on the first Sunday of the month for the 7:30 and 9am worship services.
