At 6:15 a.m., the first applicant showedup at USF Embassy Suites in Tampa, ready tohand out resumes and secure a job at theTampa Premium Outlets.

The sight brought a smile to StaceyNance.

“I think this is a true testament of whatthe entire day is going to be,” said Nance, theoutlet mall’s general manager.

As the hours passed, the crowd swelledby hundreds as job seekers waited outsidethe hotel’s ballroom for the doors to openat 10 a.m., for the Tampa Premium OutletsJob Fair.

By the time the doors closed — at 7 p.m.— mall representatives estimated more than3,000 people had dropped off resumes andmet with recruiters from the nearly 70shops that participated in the job fair.

More than 800 jobs were on the line forwhat is the most anticipated mall openingin Pasco County in years.

The outdoor mall, with 110 brand nameoutlet stores, is expected to be a shoppingmecca that will be a regional attraction onwhat was once pasture land, off State Road56, near an Interstate 75 interchange.

The grand opening is a weekend celebra-tion from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1. Details onspecial events and celebrity appearances arepending.

But on Aug. 27, the focus was on employ-ment opportunities.

The job fair day brought out an eagerpool of applicants, freshly dressed to stepright into their hoped-for new jobs.

Land O’ Lakes resident Javier Perez saidhe wants to pursue an art degree at theSavannah College of Art and Design. A full-time mall job could make that dreamhappen.

“I’m going to apply to as many stores as Ican,” he said, noting he sought advice on hisresume from his mother, who works as acounselor.

Wesley Chapel resident Cherish Suddithis a pharmacy supervisor for a health carecompany. She hopes to work nights andweekends at her favorite store — VeraBradley.

“I’m a fan,” said Suddith, who is aUniversity of Phoenix graduate. And sheadded, “I’m used to working lots of hours.”

She is excited to see the mall move intothe area, and looking to her future.

“I think it’s a good thing. It will drive themarket,” she said. “I’m looking to purchase ahome soon. I think it (the mall) was need-ed.”

It was a battle at times to find a place tofill out an application.

People sat in rows of chairs and hunchedover countertops. Some elbowed their wayto get wall space.

Matthew Holleran plopped to the floor

by the registration tables. The recent WesleyHigh School graduate works seasonally as areferee in youth lacrosse.

But, his mother thought it was a goodidea for him to look for full-time work, as heplans for college.

Most of his applications were for jobs atsports stores.

“I don’t want to do something I’m not in-terested in,” Holleran said.

Wesley Chapel resident GiovanniVelasquez was looking for part-time work, also preferably at a sports store.

“I’m big into sports,” said Velasquez, whois a junior at the University of South Florida.

Gerardo Gonzalez moved from Chicagoto Wesley Chapel about a year ago. His workexperience is in management, but he had a

non-compete clause at his last job. Now, hesaid, “I need to go back to work.”

Gonzalez was looking over the list of out-let shops and mall positions, deciding on hisselections as he walked toward the ball-room.

He expected the process to be competi-tive.

Brandon resident Winona Beates regis-tered at the sign-up table as a recruiter. Shedeclined to say which shop she represent-ed. But said the store will need a broadrange of positions, including sales and man-agement.

“You always have to interview more peo-ple than you need,” she said. “If you want 50,

A child’s trip to a doctor’s office often in-cludes anxiety, frustration and tears. And ifthe child refuses to behave, that can be theparent’s reaction as well.

“I’ve been exposed to the long waittimes, and the distress of the patients andthe parents while they’re waiting for thedoctor,” said Wesley Chapel resident KatyGabriel.

Gabriel has experienced that distressfrom both sides of the pediatric office. As amother, she knows what it’s like to waitwith upset or bored children who don’twant to be there in the first place. And as anurse for more than 20 years, she’s seen pe-diatric doctors try to heal unhappy childrenand deal with unhappy families.

It’s a setting that could use a little creativ-ity and fun. And, Gabriel has inventedsomething she thinks will provide just that.

Her company, Squirrely Scrolls, providesa different type of exam table paper, thecrinkly sheets that get replaced with eachnew patient. Normally a simple white,

Fish fry and Florida’s history mix on Sept. 11By Michael [email protected]

The Pioneer Florida Museum & Village,15602 Pioneer Museum Road in Dade City,is situated on 16 acres and has an oldschoolhouse, church and general store aspart of its attractions.

Now, it would like more people to comeand see what it has to offer.

“One of the issues that we have here isthat a lot of people don’t know about themuseum,” said Brenda Minton, event coordi-nator for the museum. “It’s kind of like DadeCity’s best kept secret.”

Minton hopes the secret will be out withthe museum’s Old-Fashioned FamilyStyle Fish Fry, which will take place Sept. 11from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The Kiwanis Club of Dade City is co-sponsoring the event.

The fish fry replaces their Pioneer Daysevent in an effort to offer something new tothe community. It includes live music byThose Unscrupulous Sunspots, a six-pieceband that performs covers of rock and rollclassics from The Beatles, Rolling Stones andNeil Young, as well as playing original tunes.

In addition to the fish, dinner includesitems such as cheese grits, hushpuppies, cole slaw and baked beans. Food can be or-dered to go, and is available by delivery tobusinesses that order 10 or more dinnersduring that time.

The museum hopes most people willchoose to eat there and take a fresh look atthe area, and the dozen or so buildings that

have been collected over its history. The Pioneer Florida Museum began at

the Pasco County Fairgrounds before mov-ing to its current location more than 40years ago. Many of the buildings were reno-vated and relocated to their new home, andthey come from different parts of the state.A shoe repair shop from downtown DadeCity shares the grounds with a steam enginefrom Trilby, and a Lacoochee school andgeneral store. There’s also a cane syrup mill,a quilt building and a barn.

Those Unscrupulous Sunspots will beperforming on the front porch of anotherstructure, the Overstreet House, which is a

two-story farm home made of pine. The main museum features a sample bed-

room, doctor’s office and dentist’s office. There are also authentic examples of clothes, tools, toys, pottery and other artifacts fromFlorida’s pioneer era that began in the 1800s.

Minton believes that people will be inter-ested in returning once they see the historyon display.

Some come back for more than a tour, she said. The Enterprise Church, built in1878 and replaced in 1903, is still availablefor weddings.

In addition to the music, the museumwill set up picnic tables and hold games

during the event.Visitors who stay to eat will enjoy free

lemonade and iced tea as well. The museum’s goal is to sell 500 tickets

for the event, and Minton said feedback hasbeen good so far.

“It’s kind of bringing the community to-gether for a fun afternoon and also showingoff the museum,” she said. “I think we’regoing to have a nice crowd.”

Tickets for the fish fry are $8 and can bepurchased at the museum, the Dade CityChamber of Commerce or by calling (352)206-8889. For more information, visitPioneerFloridaMuseum.org.

The event, which will take place fromSept. 11 through Sept. 13 at Tampa NorthFlight Center, features hot air balloon rides, tethered balloon rides, two balloon glows, two balloon launches, helicopters, planes, live music, a specialty car show and more.

Admission is free and parking is $5.The festival expects to have 30 balloons

coming from Florida, South Carolina,Georgia and Alabama, said Jessica Warren, the festival director. There may be even aballoon coming in from Colorado, she said.

Warren also expects about 30 other air-craft: biplanes, war birds, a glider, Cessna andothers.

“We have a lot of planes coming in fromMiami, Ft. Lauderdale, New Smyrna Beach,”Warren said. The festival is advertisedthrough airports, to let pilots know what ishappening.

“A lot of the Facebook advertising thatwe do targets aviation enthusiasts. There aredifferent clubs on there that we’ve sharedthe information with, to let them know thatit’s happening,” she said.

The festival also will have kites, radio-controlled aircraft, food vendors andentertainment.

There are some new features at the festi-val, too.

“We have bounce houses this year, which we didn’t have in years past. We havethe balls that walk on water. You get insideof them and you walk,” Warren said. And, sheadded, “We’re trying to get a gyrosphere.”

This year’s food vendors include HappyHangar Café, Salsa Slow Smoked BBQ,Collins Concessions, Heavenly Snow – NewOrleans, The Bacon Boss Food Truck,Jimmy’s Slider Food Truck, Kona Ice ofWesley Chapel and Churroland.

There’s also going to be a car show, fea-turing BMWs and exotic cars.

Helicopter rides start at $25 and teth-ered balloon rides are $10. The hot airballoon rides are sold out, but a waiting listis being kept. The hot air balloon rides are$189.

There also will be a Quilt of Valor presen-tation on Friday night, to honor veteranswho served in a war zone.

It’s a special presentation, Warren said.“You have to be nominated, and you only re-ceive one in a lifetime.”

All together there are 56 vendors, 11

bands, 30 balloon pilots and at least 30 air-plane pilots.

“We have about 20 volunteers comingfrom Grow Life Church. We have about 30volunteers from the Civil Air Patrol,” Warrensaid.

Parking will be at the Compark 75 prop-erty, which is next door to the airport andshuttle service will be provided.

When the event started three years ago,Warren knew it would grow.

And, it is attracting widespread interest.“We have people flying in just for the fes-

tival all of the way from Puerto Rico,Maryland, New York. I have people whohave called me from all over the UnitedStates. These are people who are just com-ing to see the balloons,” Warren said.

“We still want to kind of keep it in thesmall-town feel that Wesley Chapel, is. Butjust like Wesley Chapel is growing, we aregrowing, too,” Warren said.

FILE PHOTOSA hefty dose of rain last year put a damper on attendance at the second annual Festival of Flight, but Jessica Warren, the festival director, ishoping that won’t be the case this year. Shown here, the propeller of a Navy training plane flown in by Warbird Adventures.

Drive through Pasco County and it’s easyto see the signs of growth.

New houses are popping up in subdivi-sions. New apartment complexes are beingbuilt, and land is being cleared for more de-velopment.

And now that school is back in session, some of that growth is beginning to showup in classrooms, too.

For the first time since 2007, the enroll-ment figures for the first day of school inPasco County Schools increased by morethan 1,000 students compared to the firstday of school during the previous year.

Countywide, the district’s enrollmentwas 66,059, on the first day of classes, notcounting four schools that had not yet sub-mitted enrollment figures.

District schools gained a total of 1,138students, while charter schools operating inthe county picked up 441 — bringing thetotal to 1,579.

The increased enrollment exceeded thedistrict’s expectations. Officials had project-ed an increase of 1,490.

Elementary schools experienced thebiggest gain, picking up 672 more than lastyear. Middle schools experienced a slight de-cline, tallying seven fewer students than theprevious year, and high schools gained 526.

The district’s education centers also sawa slight decrease, dropping by 53 students.

Some schools experienced increases, while others saw declines across TheLaker/Lutz News coverage area.

The opening of Sanders MemorialSTEAM Magnet School, with 718 students, inLand O’ Lakes had an impact on enrollmentsat several area schools.

Connerton Elementary School’s first dayenrollment was 770, down from last year’sfirst-day count of 890.

Oakstead Elementary also experienced adecline from its enrollment of 1,123 on thefirst day of school last year, compared with

1,000 this year.Pine View Elementary, also in Land O’

Lakes, reported an opening day enrollmentof 530, down 100 students from the prioryear.

Lake Myrtle Elementary, also located inLand O’ Lakes, had a decline of 73 students, going from 639 last year to 566 this year.

Denham Oaks Elementary, in Lutz, sawits enrollment drop by 56 students, goingfrom 669 last year to 613 this year.

Other schools experienced enrollmentdeclines as Quail Hollow Elementary re-opened in Wesley Chapel, with 380 studentson its first day.

Watergrass Elementary School’s first-dayenrollment of 592 reflects a decrease of 114students from its first-day figure last year.

Wesley Chapel Elementary’s first-day en-rollment dropped by 191 students, ascompared to last year.

Two elementary schools reported enroll-ment gains of 50 students or more. SandPine Elementary, in Wesley Chapel, in-creased by 51 students and WoodlandElementary, in Zephyrhills, experienced anuptick of 83 students.

Most of the middle schools in the centraland east portions of Pasco County sawchanges that were within 25 students of lastyear, plus or minus.

Pine View Middle School was the onlyschool that experiencing a bigger change. Its first-day enrollment decreased by 65 stu-dents, compared to last year.

Among high schools in central and eastPasco, those charting the largest gains wereLand O’ Lakes High, with an increase of 155students, Zephyrhills High, with a boost of119 students, and Sunlake High, with anuptick of 78 students.

you need to interview a 100.”Some people already had interview ap-

pointments, because they had signed upahead of time on an online virtual job fairsite. Joseph Eyster got a call for an interviewwith Auntie Anne’s store’s manager, StevenGray.

Eyster lives in Land O’ Lakes and is a re-cent graduate of the University of SouthFlorida, with a degree in public health. Buthe said, “I’m eager to manage.”

Gray said he expected to hire more than30 people, including assistant managers, shift leaders and crewmembers. “I want toget my people trained,” said Gray, whomoved two weeks ago from Ohio. “It’s goingto be fast paced. We’ll sell about 1,000 pret-zels a day.”

He has been with the company morethan five years and jumped at the chance towork at a new mall. “There’s more opportu-

nity for me,” he said. The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of

Commerce and the Career Center at Pasco-Hernando State College coordinated theevent. The chamber hosted a breakfast forrecruiters and store representatives, andstaffed a hospitality room, too.

Nearly a dozen volunteers wore brightorange T-shirts bearing the message: “Let’sput our cities on the map.”

“It’s happening. It’s on,” said Hope Allen, the chamber’s executive director. “We had apacked room. It’s very exciting to be here.”

Jobs are out there, said Kenneth Russ, vice president of business services at PHSC.“The economy is growing by leaps andbounds,” he said, noting applicants have toapply with the right skills at the right time.

The college assisted with job postings onthe virtual job fair site, fielded phone callsfrom prospective applicants, and offeredhelp with resumes. “We got a surge thismorning,” he said. “People are going to thewebsite.”

The job fair hours at Embassy Suiteswere set to end at 7 p.m., to accommodatepeople who have jobs. “There will be peo-ple who want a better job,” Russ said.“Everyone is always looking for a better joband higher wages.”

Most applicants were expected tocome from Hillsborough, Hernando and

Pasco counties.Jenny Badger lives in Bay City and works

for a Dade City company that cleans govern-ment buildings at night. But she’d like extraincome, and has more time to work nowthat her son is in school.

She hoped to get at job at the NikeFactory Outlet. “I just shop there a lot,” shesaid.

That kind of passion can be a plus, ac-cording to a check-off sheet on the RalphLauren table. Recruiters looked for appli-cants that smiled, made eye contact and hada passion for the brand.

Nikia Stewart had her sights set onMichael Kors. She had the passion.

“I just love this brand,” she said. “It’s clas-sic but comfortable. It’s not over the top, like a lot of brands.”

Stewart and her family moved from NewYork to Land O’ Lakes about eight years ago.She is a graduate of PHSC, with a degree inhealth care management.

She noted that Land O’ Lakes and theWesley Chapel area have changed a lot.

“I like it (Land O’ Lakes), because when Ifirst moved there I felt in the middle ofnowhere. Now I’m somewhere,” Stewart said.

Gabriel’s paper includes games, puzzles andcoloring opportunities. With a series of sixpanels that repeat throughout the roll, theexam table becomes an activity center forpatients and their siblings.

“When the doctor comes in, not only arethe kids occupied and entertained, they’rein better moods. and it also keeps them onthe table where the doctor wants them,”Gabriel said.

The inspiration for the product camefrom her family. When her 10-year-old son,Christian, sustained a football injury, he hadto sit in the room while the office dealt witha malfunctioning x-ray machine.

“It took forever. It was driving me crazy. Iwas peeking out the door waiting for thedoctor to come,” recalled Christian, now 11and an assistant in designing the SquirrelyScrolls. After testing out his mother’s idea, heagrees it would make long waits more toler-able and improve the exam room setting.

While there are obvious benefits for thepatients, the advantages for the office arejust as significant, Gabriel said. Calmer, hap-pier children make for an improved officevisit experience, which improves patientsatisfaction and client retention.

Plus, the crayons are easy to clean, and the

doctor can tear off more sheets, as needed. And, since the children want to be on

the table, exams can be completed more ef-ficiently and with less negativity.

More than 50 doctors — working inaround two dozen offices — currently useSquirrely Scrolls in their exam rooms,Gabriel said, and there have been frequentre-orders.

The addition of activities has benefitsthat even the doctors notice.

“Our patients and their parents loveSquirrely Scrolls,” said Dr. Samir Douidarfrom

Night Owl Pediatrics Urgent Care inTampa, via email. “The activities on thepaper help to keep the children occupiedwhile I perform my exams, making the visitmore productive and beneficial for all.”

Those activities get refreshed every sooften, with hangman giving way to a mazein the most recent theme.

Currently, the paper comes in AmazonRain Forest and Calypso Caribbean, with di-nosaurs and outer space themes beingconsidered for the future.

For now, the business has become sosuccessful that Gabriel has cut back on hernursing duties to tend to its growth, andshe’s recruited the family to help.

In addition to Christian, her other son,Mike, has worked on the outlines of the ani-

mals. And, husband Michael handles thecomputer design. They now have a ware-house in Wesley Chapel to store the scrolls, and hope to find a sponsor on the paperand a distributor to expand nationally aswell.

For now, Gabriel is motivated by thefeedback she’s getting from the offices thatuse her product, and the knowledge thatshe’s helping families make a necessary ap-

pointment a little more bearable while doc-tors give patients a better office experience.

“I hear the same thing over and overagain (from participating offices). ‘We loveit.’ They all use the ‘L’ word,” Gabriel said.“They can’t get enough of it, and they won’tgo back to white. I promise you that.”

Getting an early taste of the artistic lifeBy B.C. [email protected]

Patrons perusing the shelves of the chil-dren’s section at the Hugh Embry BranchLibrary got a bonus for the past severalweeks.

But they’ve had to look up to see it.On the top ledge of the shelves, there’s

an exhibit of artworks created by studentsfrom Saint Anthony Catholic School.

The works demonstrate the broad rangeof artistic instruction these young studentsexperience under the guidance of LindaWhitman, the art teacher at Saint Anthonysince 1987.

There’s a linoleum block piece featuringa blue cat, created by Effie Tillack, a fourth-grader at the time.

There are icons, by Aneesha Joshy andGabriel Quinn, made through the techniqueof tooling metal.

Destiny Li, who was just in kindergarten, has two pieces on display. One is a paintingand the other, a collage.

Other examples of interesting work in-clude mixed media, yarn painting andcolored pencil drawing.

The exhibit went up in August and is ex-pected to come down around Sept. 10.

“Miss (Linda) Whitman, she does thisevery year. This has been going on for aboutfour years now, and every year, there is veryimpressive art,” said Mary Keesling, Librarian1 at the Hugh Embry Branch Library.

“People have come in to visit,” Keeslingadded, noting she thinks most of those com-ing to see the exhibit are parents of theartists.

The display showcases Whitman’s effortto give her students a broad exposure to art.

“I try to give the kids a taste of every-

thing,” she said. “So, that they’re aware of dif-ferent styles and different artists.”

She also encourages her 218 students toexplore their creative side and remain opento their artistic spirit.

“The younger they are, the more open-minded they are,” Whitman said. “They areabsolutely open to anything and every-thing.”

Around third-grade, though, a lot of chil-dren lose their enthusiasm and begin todoubt their artistic abilities, she said.

At that point, Whitman said, “they’re be-ginning to say, ‘I can’t draw.’

“Usually by third grade, some adult hasmade the mistake of saying, ‘What is that?’

And that stymies them. That will discour-age them,” the art teacher said.

Instead of asking what an artwork por-trays, Whitman said it’s better to say, “Tell me

about it.”Asking the student how he or she creat-

ed a piece of art also helps to encourage theartist to stay interested in the creativeprocess, she said.

Beyond learning how to work with vari-ous media, the students learn art history andabout various styles of art.

Whitman said student works are exhibit-ed each year at the library, at Center StateBank and at the Pasco County Fair.

She chooses the pieces to display basedon merit.

“I intentionally have their kids writetheir names on the back of their artwork, soI don’t know who it is. If I choose to showtwo of one student’s or three or one stu-dent’s in an art exhibit, then so be it.

“I had a principal years ago say, ‘Well, Inoticed you had three pieces by this one lit-

tle girl in the exhibit. If you limited her toone, then two other students could haveshown. I said, ‘Yeah, but that’s like tellingthe fastest runner on the track team, ‘Canyou slow down, and let somebody elsewin?’ ”

Staging an exhibit requires work, but it isworth it, Whitman said, because of the thrillit provides for the students who have theirwork on display.

“They enjoy exhibiting. They like thelimelight,” she said.

That is, except perhaps for kindergart-ners.

“The kindergartners are funny. When Iask them, ‘Can I keep your artwork for anart show?’ (They respond) ‘Well, no.’

“They don’t like that idea,” she said, not-ing they want to take their work home andhave it hung on their refrigerator door.

But, the teacher or an older brother orsister will talk to the child to assure themthe work is just on loan, and the kindergart-ners typically change their minds.

Once a student has had a work on dis-play, they will often ask Whitman if a workthey’ve completed is good enough to exhib-it.

The whole idea is to encourage childrento develop and use their talents, said SisterAlice Ottapurackal, the school’s principal.

“It’s mainly to encourage children to dotheir best. We want to make sure that theyknow that we appreciate them, and to givethem a chance to shine,” she said.

“They’re so excited when they see theirwork displayed,” she added.

“We try to embrace whatever talent Godhas given them, and to show that to othersand to share with others.”

Plus, the principal noted, such displaysreflect well on the school.

Heavy rainfalls during recentweeks have caused many home-owners to worry about diseasein their landscape plants.

While it is true that mostplant pathogens prefer lots ofwater and high temperatures —that doesn’t mean your plantsautomatically will become dis-eased in our recent scenario.

And, just because conditionsare right for disease, it doesn’tmean that you automaticallyshould spray chemicals.

Spraying chemicals into theenvironment without confirm-ing that disease is present ispotentially harmful, not to men-tion that it’s a waste of time andmoney. It’s also important to know that itwill not “cure” or make waterloggedplants stronger.

Positive confirmation of disease re-quires visual signs of the pathogen, such asfungus on the leaves, and symptoms of thedisease like spots, wilting or dieback. Onlythen should a fungicide be considered.

But remember: Applying fungicidescannot cure diseased plant parts, such asroots and leaves. Fungicides simply willhelp reduce spread to other plants in thelandscape.

If you determine that your plants areinfected with a disease that can be treat-ed with chemicals, be sure to follow thelabel directions.

The UF/IFAS Pasco Extension Officecan help you determine if your plants arediseased and can recommend your bestmethod of control.

While disease is a threat in wet condi-tions, unless plants are naturally adapted towatery environments like the bald cypress, standing water will more quickly become aproblem by taking a toll on the roots.

Plants need oxygen. Waterlogged soilscan deprive them of that oxygen. Eventhe bald cypress found in aquatic envi-ronments needs oxygen; hence thestump-like “knees” which help move oxy-gen into the plant roots.

It’s not always evident that plant rootsare suffering from oxygen deprivation, since saturated soils don’t always havestanding water.

Saturated soils are simply those thatare so wet that plant roots cannot obtainoxygen. In other words, standing water isnot required to waterlog a plant. Plantroots in waterlogged soils appear stuntedand withered, with the root tips decom-posing and rotting away.

Waterlogged plants quickly showsigns of stress by yellowing and wilting. However, if the soil drains relativelyquickly, plant roots will start to get oxy-gen they need once again, and the planthas a good chance of recovery.

However, plants left in waterloggedsoils for extended periods of time will die.

Unfortunately, there is no establishedperiod of time that roots are in water-logged soils that tells us whether or not aplant will survive.

The length of time a root can be de-prived of oxygen and be able to recovervaries greatly, based on plant species andenvironmental conditions.

So, what are we to do with our plantswhen extended rains put our landscapesat risk?

Here are some practical steps you cantake to reduce damage and disease inyour landscape if waterlogging doesn’tclaim your plants.

Keep in mind that many of thesesteps are proactive and need to be con-sidered prior to and not during or afterthe rains begin.

• Don’t fertilize your plants dur-ing periods of high rainfall. Oursugar-sand soils quickly leach nutrientswasting your money and polluting ourwaterways with fertilizers that plantsdon’t have a chance to uptake before itswhisked away into the drinking water re-serves below ground. Wait for morefavorable conditions to fertilize plants, when rainfall is not so heavy and soils arewell drained. This is especially true forstressed plants, which may actually beharmed by fertilizer applications.

• Prune areas of diseased ordying tissue. Leaving diseased tissue be-hind can further spread disease, soremove the debris. Do not compost dis-eased tissue because it can harbordisease-causing organisms.

• Turn off the sprinklers. Whenplants are getting more than sufficientrainfall, there is no need for supplementalirrigation. This will only encourage dis-ease, saturate the soil further and wasteprecious water resources. Establishedplants, with a few exceptions includingsome turf grasses, do not usually requiresupplemental irrigation even during peri-ods of dry weather.

• Properly mulch plants. Mulch iseffective at holding in moisture duringdrought, and the same holds true duringperiods of high rainfall. Mulch plantswith no more than 2 inches to 3 inchesof mulch such as pine bark or melaleuca.Leave a couple of inches between thebark and, mulch to keep moisture awayfrom the bark, which causes rot. Whenplants are waterlogged, pull the mulchlayer back to expose roots to as muchoxygen as possible. Once the soil hasdried out, replace the mulch.

• Reduce soil compaction, whichlimits drainage, by limiting foot traffic inwet areas.

• When mowing, remove clumpsof grass, which can harbor pathogensand limit exposure of underlying turf tosunlight.

• Put the right plant in the rightplace. Obviously, this comes way beforethe rains, but it’s often overlooked and isthe simplest way of protecting yourplants during high rainfall. Areas of yourlandscape that are depressed and fre-quently hold water should not beplanted with species that cannot toleratestanding water. Instead, use plants adapt-ed to wet conditions or considerinstalling a rain garden as a centerpiecefor a beautiful addition.

For help identifying disease, or withgeneral questions about irrigation andplant management in your turf or land-scape, call the UF/IFAS Pasco ExtensionOffice at (352) 518-0156.

Pasco County’s largest liquor store,Party Liquors, opened Aug. 8 in PascoPlaza next to Big Lots in Land O’Lakes, taking over the former locationof Beall’s Outlet.

Owner Nick Tanoukhi chose LandO’ Lakes for his third Party Liquorsstore for the same reason other busi-nesses are opening here — location, location, location!

“This area is booming with newhomes and new retail,” said Nick. “Wewanted to serve residents of Land O’Lakes, Lutz and Wesley Chapel who didnot have a super liquor store in theirneighborhood.”

Nick found the ideal commercialspace for his new store, which is strate-gically located at the 54/41 intersectionin the heart of Pasco County. To cele-brate the store’s opening, Party Liquorsis hosting a grand opening celebrationthis Friday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m.

“It’s going to be a great time! We’rehaving free wine tastings, free liquortastings and free beer tastings. Plus,we’ll have lots of free food and give-aways,” said Nick.

At 11,200 square feet, Party Liquorsis big — five times the size of mostneighborhood liquor stores. And,according to Nick, being big matters.

“Independent liquor stores like oursneed to be big to give us room for lotsof inventory, so we can buy at volumepricing,” said Nick. “Our businessmodel is simple — we buy more, so youcan pay less!”

Nick stocks his stores with just aboutevery liquor category and variety, espe-cially the most popular products. “And

right now that means growlers, craftbeer, rye whiskeys and small batchbourbons,” said Nick.

Party Liquors has the largest selec-tion of fine wines in the area, stockingvineyards most big box stores don’tcarry, Nick says. It also offers an incred-ible selection of cigars, all stored in awalk-in, climate-controlled humidor.

Its beer selection, both kegs and bot-tled, is also enviable. The store keeps12 different beers on tap for growlers —64-ounce, take-home containers ofdraft beer that only became legal inFlorida on July 1.

Party Liquor employees take greatpride in their product knowledge andcustomer service. Land O’ LakesManager James Hill has worked for thecompany since 2008, moving up theranks to become store manager. HisLand O’ Lakes team will eventuallyinclude 15 employees.

James’ product knowledge is evidentat the wine tastings he hosts everyFriday evening from 4 to 7 p.m., andagain on Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m.

“It’s a great time to come by andsample our newest wines, and it’sabsolutely free,” said James.

Behind Freedom High School is theschool’s football field, where the Patriotsplay home games. And behind that is a prac-tice field where dozens of players run drills, practice plays, chase footballs, throw spiralsand do their best to improve throughoutthe week.

The athletes are both varsity and juniorvarsity players, and they often practice to-gether.

“The motto here is ‘One Team, OneFamily,’” head coach Tom Donohoe said. “Wedon’t want any player out here to feel likethey’re not a part of what we do. So we’rereal big on trying to keep everybody in-volved.”

That involvement is paying dividendsunder Donohoe’s leadership, now enteringits fourth year. Last year, the varsity teamwas 6-4, which marks the first winning sea-son at Freedom since 2009. And the recordcould have been even better, because theyhad so many close games: The Patriots lostone in overtime, another by just one pointand a third by two points.

Many of the team’s contests were low-scoring affairs (Freedom scored 15 points orless in half of its wins) because the defensewas tops in their district last year, Donohoesaid. This season he wants to ramp up thescoring and kick the offense into high gear.

“The defense did a great job. They keptus in every game,” he said. “Our focus thisyear is hopefully to score some more pointson offense and special teams, and rewardthe defense a little bit more.”

Putting more points on the board willhelp eliminate the sting of those close loss-es. It’s something that senior Xavier Hardyremembers well.

“It was hard to take those losses. It reallywas,” Hardy said. As a wide receiver and de-fensive end, he experienced the game fromboth sides of the field. Having a winningrecord but leaving some wins on the tablemotivates him to work harder and providesenior leadership in his final season.

Things look promis-ing for the Patriots thisyear, Hardy said. Theteam is more connectedthan last year, and play-ers are learning to stickwith their assignmentsand do less freelancingon the field.

Practice is hard workat Freedom, but Hardywouldn’t have it anyother way.

“I love everythingabout football. It’s thecontact and the study-ing,” he said.

This season, experi-ence will also play a big role. Last year’svarsity team found success even though itfeatured seven sophomores and two fresh-men. Those players are now a year older with

more confidence, andhave become veteransof the system. Overall, the Patriots will retainseven starters on of-fense and seven ondefense from last year, which gives the teamevery opportunity tobuild on 2014’s success.

While Donohoefeels good about wherehis team is, he’s beendoing this too long tomake any bold predic-tions. Now in his 22ndseason coaching over-all, he wants players to

set the playoffs as a goal. But he knows thereare many steps in between to worry aboutthe end of the season when it’s just starting.

“We take it game by game, and more

than that, we take it practice by practice.Hopefully we’re better today than we wereyesterday,” he said.

Even after coaching so long, the game isstill fun for him.

Donohoe moves from group to groupduring practice, relying on his trustedcoaching staff, but he is also eager to see forhimself how his players are executing.

When the offense is running simulations,Donohoe is there. When the kickoff team ispracticing, and the kick return team is get-ting work in, Donohoe is there. And, as theydevelop over the years and mature on andoff the field, Donohoe wants to be there, too.

“I tell the guys all the time that I’m apoor man, because I’m a teacher, and wedon’t make a lot of money, but I’m a richman, because I get to work with kids,”Donohoe said. “The opportunity to comeout here and help the youth is what it’sabout. There’s nothing better than that.”

Well, you don’t have to go to a tropi-cal rainforest to do it.

TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park, opening on Sept. 15, offers opportunitiesfor people age 5 through adult to navi-gate courses of varying difficulty in anOld Florida forest.

The company purchased the land atthe beginning of the year and began con-structing the course in April, said LoganTreaster, general manager for TreeHoppers.

The company was attracted to the sitebecause of its characteristics and its loca-tion.

“We needed it to be relatively undis-turbed for quite awhile,” Treaster said.

Plus, he noted, “It’s not too far awayfrom some of the bigger market places, like Tampa, Orlando, kind of the WesleyChapel area, Clearwater.”

The 68-acre park, at 27839 Saint JoeRoad in Dade City, offers visitors achance to spend time among the tree-

tops, while challenging themselves oncourses that are designed for beginnersthrough experts.

The park’s eight courses are color-coded from yellow (easier) to doubleblack diamond (expert).

There is a series of platforms inter-woven throughout the trees connectedby cable, wood, rope and zip lines toform different elements.

Groups of elements link together toform separate courses – each of a varyingdifficulty level. There are more than 100unique elements, creating a series of ad-ventures to lead visitors throughout theforest.

Although every course has zip lines, you will need to climb, maneuver and tra-verse the various elements to reachthem.

As one progresses through the diffi-culty levels, the bridges become lessstable, requiring more balance, agility, focus and arm strength.

Climbers will receive a harness and asafety and equipment orientation beforebeginning their climb.
