This handbook is designed to help students understand the services provided by the Learning Resource
System and the Learning Resource Center.
The Learning Resource System (LRS) is a virtual library that students can access at any time, from
anywhere. The LRS is an ideal tool for students to use to complete homework, conduct research, or ndhelpful resources, because students can launch it easily and securely from the Stanbridge College website.
The website contains 6 sections:
About To understand more about the LRS services, including hours and
contact information, students can click on the About section.
Library Resources This section links students to the librarys information resources,
including databases, e-books, and a catalog of our print collection.
Subject Guides This section includes information designed specially for students
interested in Vocational Nursing, Information Technology, General
Education, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Service
Learning resources.
APA Formatting Help This section offers assistance and helpful web resources to students
putting the nishing touches on an essay.
Video Tutorials Check this section for video tutorials on the electronic databases, tips,
and useful links that help guide students in their research. Academic Success
Coordinator
Find out how to improve your study skills, time management, and test-
taking strategies with the Academic Success Coordinator.
The librarian gives all students an orientation to the Learning Resource System at the beginning of their
program. Students receive further training in research methods in the particular courses in which they are
required to produce written projects.

The mission of the Learning Resource System is to provide the resources required to meet the learning
needs of students in support of the faculty, programs, and educational objectives of Stanbridge College The
Learning Resources System facilitates student learning by providing informational resources and services
to enhance and supplement classroom instruction. The Learning Resource System is committed to the
development of information literacy skills and lifelong learning on the part of all students in the variouseducational programs offered by the college. To fulll its mission, the Learning Resource System and its
librarian are committed to giving students:
Access to a variety of learning resources in a format that facilitates research;
Orientations to enhance students knowledge of how to conduct research in an academically
responsible manger, including:
Policies and procedures of the Learning Resource System;
Guides used to retrieve information for research projects; and
Principles for identifying and evaluating the quality of resources in the research process.
Experiences to broaden and deepen knowledge of research in their subject area.

The Learning Resource System and its librarian adhere to the American Library Associations Code of
Ethics, found at http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/proethics/codeofethics/codeethics.cfm.
Policy On Use of Electronic Equipment
Misuse or abuse of hardware and software in the LRC is a violation of college policy. In the event ofequipment failure, please contact the librarian or a PC/Network technician in the colleges IT department
for technical support.
Copyright InfringementThe Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) protects and regulates copyright holders in
regard to copyright infringement. Copyright infringement is a serious crime and can be severely punished.
If a person willfully commits an infringement of copyright, the person can be ned up to $150,000. A person
who commits copyright infringement, but who is not aware that he or she has done so, is still liable to be
punished by a court of law, though the ne may be reduced.
Policy of Condentiality
The Learning Resource Center respects the right of students to seek information, and it will not release any
documents about users of the LRC to anyone, unless the user violates college policy.

Academic Success CoordinatorElizabeth Walker, the Academic Success Coordinator, can help students in the following areas:
Study Skills - Do you need to learn how to study more efciently and effectively?
Time Management - Do you nd yourself overwhelmed by the work/life/school balance?
Test-taking Strategies - Do you feel like you know the material and have studied hard, but your
test scores do not reect that?
If you would like to schedule a meeting with Elizabeth to evaluate your learning needs, please contact
her at [email protected], or contact your Student Services ofcer to set up an appointment. If
you would like to further develop your skills, there is also an option to complete a 4-session Professional
Development course in either study skills, time management, or test-taking strategies.

The Learning Resource Center has 16 computer stations, 10 testing stations, 2 collaborating rooms, and
a printer/copier for student use. Students can reserve time in the collaboration rooms, but if they are not
reserved then the rooms are available on a rst-come, rst-serve basis. Stanbridge Colleges wi- network
is also available in the LRC. Students who want individualized or group assistance with research projects
in their classes may request it in person or through e-mail. The print book collection in the librariansofce contains test-preparation books, current textbooks and other related resources that are available for
checkout for a maximum of two weeks at a time. A 24-hour surveillance camera is used to monitor daily
activities in the LRC.

All print materials in the Learning Resource Center can be checked out for a period of two weeks. These
materials are listed on the Learning Resource System (LRS) website or can be browsed in person at the
Learning Resource Center on campus. If a book contains a CD-ROM with supplemental material, the
CDROM must be returned with the book.
Borrowing Process Materials are listed on the LRS website.
Visit the Learning Resource Center when the librarian is in the ofce to check out a book.
Librarian hours can be viewed on the LRS website.
Items should be returned in the same condition as when they were checked out, besides regular
wear and tear.
Borrowers can check out a maximum of three items at a time.
Fines & Fees Fines & fees must be paid in full; partial payment will not be accepted.
If a book is not returned on time, there is an overdue fee of 25 cents per day.
When an item is returned in poor condition, the borrower must pay for the damage. The damage fee
can range from one dollar to the actual replacement cost for the item, depending on the librarian
assessment.
If a book has a CD-ROM missing when returned, that student must pay as a ne half of the value of
the book.
If an item is overdue by 30 days, the librarian will consider the item lost. The borrower must pay the
full amount to replace the item.
If a student has outstanding fees due to the Learning Resource Center for a checked-out item, that
student will not be eligible to graduate until the fees are paid in full.
Renewal Borrowers can renew an item up to two times, either in person or through Student Central.
Borrowers cannot renew an item if that item has been requested by another borrower at the time
that is due.

1. Select File-Print, or click the Print icon.
2. You will see a printer dialog display:
a. Select the specic pages you wish to print, or keep it set on All pages.
b. Enter in the number of copies you want.c. Choose either the black & white or color printer.
d. Click OK.
3. Data from your computer will transfer over to the print release station.
4. At the print release station select your Print Jobs:

Troubleshooting Make sure you are printing the document from your computer. Computers are numbered 1-15 and
will appear as lab001, lab002, etc. on the printing computer.
Use the print preview tool to ensure that your PowerPoint slides appear completely on the page.
Please ask the librarian for help if there are any problems.

1. Go to the Stanbridge College website at www.stanbridge.edu.
2. Click on Student Login in the top right corner.
3. Type in your Student ID or e-mail address and your password.
4. Once you are logged in successfully, scroll over the Student Services tab in the upper part of the
screen and click on the Learning Resource System tab when it appears.5. You will now have access to all of the electronic resources that the Learning Resource System offers.

Access Instructions for
the ProQuest Databases Login to Student Central on the Stanbridge College home page
Click on the Learning Resource System, located under the Student Services tab
Under Library Resources select ProQuest
Click on the link to ProQuest
From here, students can search the Nursing and Allied Health database and the Research Library database.For a tutorial, please go to the Video Tutorials page on the LRS website. Students may choose to perform
a basic search or an advanced search that uses Boolean operators.
Boolean operators allows the user to search more specically, combine topics and/or keywords and
eliminate other uses.
AND Find all of the words
ex. Kidney cancer AND treatment
This will nd all articles that include both kidney cancer and treatment.
OR Find any of the words
ex. Kidney cancer OR renal treatment
This will nd all articles that include kidney cancer or renal treatment, but not necessarily both.
AND NOT Exclude the word
ex. Kidney cancer AND NOT treatment
This will nd all articles that include kidney cancer without any mention of treatment.
Specify Limits
This allows the user to select a database, a date range, and how he or she wants to view the documents.
Database allows the user to search all available databases or one specic database:
Research Library, Nursing & Allied Health Source, or National Newspaper
Abstracts.
Date range sets a specic time period for a published document.
Limit results to allows the user to nd only full-text articles or only scholarly journals.

More Search OptionsThis allows the user to select several options to focus his or her search for example.
Publication title limits the documents to a specic publication.
Document type allows the user to view the documents in all types of formats, including an
annual report, a book, a case study, etc.
Sort Results by allows the user to view his or her search results by what is most recent or
what is most relevant.
My ResearchThis allows the user to save useful documents while browsing and to display the most recent searches
made or publications visited.
Make sure to mark the box next to the documents you want rst; then click on the My Research tab.
After making the desired articles, users can read, print, e-mail, cite, mark, or copy the link to the abstract
or full text of the selected article.
Create Your BibliographyThis allows the user to download, print, or e-mail citations or document summaries of selected articles.
All students should export citations in APA format, which is the format that Stanbridge College uses in all
classes. Citations should be double-checked to make sure that it is correctly formatted.
E-mail ArticleUsers can e-mail the full-text, citations, or document summaries of selected articles.

Click on the link to CINAHL
From here, students can search on the CINAHL
with Full Text database. There are many powerful
search tools you can use to nd the perfect
selection of articles. An introduction to searching
is below:
Enter your search terms in the Findeld on the Basic Search screen.
Click the Search Optionslink, if you would like to use any of the optional Limiters or Expanders. To
close the Search Options, click the link again.
Select a specic search mode, such as Find all of my search terms, or
SmartText Searching.
ApplyLimiterssuch as Full Text or Publication type; or use search options that expand your search,
such as Apply related words. Click the Searchbutton. The Result List displays.
The search eld is displayed above the Result List. Your search terms, limiters and expanders are
retained. To revise your search, you can apply the limiters under Rene your resultson the left or
click the Show Morelink to view all available limiters.

CINAHL with Full Text database, go to the Video Tutorials page on the LRS website, or ask the librarian

QuestionPointQuestionPoint is an online chat reference service, available through the Stanbridge College Learning
Resource System website. If you have a question about using the library resources or research databases,
you can type in your question on the chat box.
If the Stanbridge College librarian is available, he will be able toanswer your question, but if he is not, there are always librarians
from other schools that can answer your question. In other words,
this online chat service is available seven days a week, 24 hours
a day, so even if you are working on a paper in the middle of
the night, there will be someone available to help you with your
question. If the librarian from another school was not able to
fully answer your question, the librarian from your school will be
notied and will contact you within one business day.
After chatting, you will receive an e-mail transcript of your chat
conversation, including any links that were shared. To ensure you
receive this e-mail and any follow-up information, please include
your e-mail address when you write your original question.

In order to use the Stanbridge College Online Learner materials: For IT students, you must rst register and
then access the tutorials via our web site.
For New Students - Enroll in Online Learner:
Login to Stanbridge College Student Central at http://www.stanbridge.edu. Under Student Services, click on Learning Resource System
Go to the Library Resources tab and click on Online Learner.
Click Launch Online Learner
On the home/login page, select Sign in. You will be prompted to sign in using a valid Microsoft
Passport ID (this is your e-mail address and password used to access the site each time you log in.).
Enter your Microsoft Passport account. If you do not have a Microsoft Passport account, select
Register in the Dont have a Passport? box to create a new account. After the Microsoft
Passport registration is completed, sign in with your Passport account. You will then be returned to
the home page.
On the home page, in the ENTER ACCESS CODE box, review and accept the End User
License Agreement.
Type the access code for the course you wish to take. Access codes are listed below for the courses
you can enroll in. Be sure to include the dashes. Text must be entered exactly as displayed.)
For each additional course you wish to take, refer to Step 5.
Access Your Online Courses - My Learning: Click on the course title link to access your online course(s). The Description and Content page
appears and includes the modules and lessons for the course.
To begin, click on the rst lesson title link or the Begin button.

Login to Stanbridge College Student Central at http://www.stanbridge.edu.
Under Student Services, click on Learning Resource System
Go to the Library Resources tab and click on Online Learner. Click Launch Online Learner
On the home page, select the Sign In button
Input your Microsoft Passport ID your email address and password.
Click the ACCESS SITE button. Your content will appear on the My Learning page.
When you have completed using Stanbridge College Online Learner, you must click the Record your lab
time link located on the top of the page to properly record your lab time with Stanbridge College.

Reference ListThis guide provides a brief overview on how to document your sources in the APA (American Psychological
Association) format. The APA format has four primary elements:
1. Title page2. A header that includes the title of the essay and the page number
3. In-text citations
4. Reference list
Formatting GuidelinesAll pages and contents of a research paper should be double-spaced and the margins of the page should
be 1 inch on each side.
In the title page of the research paper, you should include the following information:
Insert a header with the title of your research paper on the left side and the page number on the
right side.
In the center of the upper-half of the page, type your research title.
Below the title, type your rst name and last name.
Type the name of the educational institution (in this case, Stanbridge College) on the next line.
In-text CitationsIf you are quoting directly for a work, you will have to include the authors last name, the year of the
publication, and the page number for each in-text reference. For example:
According to Jones (2008), kidneys regulate electrolytes (p. 32).
OR
This is because kidneys regulate electrolytes (Jones, 2008, p. 32).
If you are paraphrasing the content of an article but are not quoting it directly, you only need to provide the
authors last name and the year of the publication. For example:
According to Jones (2008), electrolyte balance is controlled by the kidneys.
OR
Kidneys are the organ that is responsible for electrolyte balance (Jones, 2008).

Reference ListAt the end of your paper, you will provide a list of references. Your title will be Reference List, centered
at the top of the page. The references will be arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author. There
are different speci c formats for databases and other internet resources. Here is a basic example:
Author, A. (2011). Title of reference. Title of Journal, 8(3). Retrieved from
http://www.reference.com/.
Here are detailed instructions for correctly citing a source in the reference list:
The authors last name goes rst, then a comma, and then the rst initial of the authors rst name,
and then a period. If there is no author or the author is unknown, list the name of the company or
website that produced the content.
Next, list the year of publication in parentheses, followed by a period outside of the parentheses. If
there is no apparent date of publication, list it as (n.d.) for no date.
The title of the book, article, or web page is next. The rst letter of the rst word will be capitalized,
but the other words will be lowercase unless they are proper nouns.
If the content comes from a journal or database, type the name of the journal or database in italics.
All words will be capitalized (besides a, the, or, etc.), and if there is a volume and/or issue
number, the volume number will be italicized and the issue number will be in parentheses right next
to the volume number, without a space in between. This is followed by a period.
Finally, if the reference was found online, type Retrieved from and then the URL, followed by a
period. This would be added after the author, year, and title.
If a reference is longer than one line, all of the lines after the rst line need to be indented 5 spaces,
or one tab. If, when you tab, all of the lines become indented, not just the line you want to indent,
move all of the lines to the left and press enter at the beginning of the line you want to indent. Theline should not move, but when you press tab, only that line should be indented.
