Simply getting oldis arisk factor for cardiovascular disease(heartdisease); risk of stroke doubles every decade after age 55.Yourfamilys history of cardiovascular disease indicates your risk. Ifa rst-degree blood relative has had coronary heart disease orstrokebeforetheageof55years (for amalerelative) or 65years(for afemalerelative) your risk increases.
As a man you are at greater risk of heart disease than a pre-menopausal woman. But oncepast themenopause, awomans riskis similar toamans.Risk ofstrokeis similar for men andwomen.Ethnic origin also plays a role in cardiovascular disease. Peoplewith African or Asian ancestry face higher risks of developingcardiovascular diseasethan other racial groups.
Although some of these risk factors, such as age, gender orfamily history areirreversible; many important cardiovascular riskfactors aremodiableby lifestylechange, social changeanddrugtreatment.
OneofMalaysias major attractions as amedical travel destinationis its growing reputation as a centre of excellence in cardiology.Wealready haveeight hospitals that specialisein cardiac careandtreatment, whiletheMinistry ofHealth is establishing cardiologyunits at 5other hospitals.
