InHope June-Aug 2014We believe that church is about God and His people. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to join us as we celebrate and share God’s love. Our main Sunday meetings start at 10:30am with refreshments

from 10:15am. Whether you are with us for the first time or have been coming for a few weeks, it’s great to have you

with us.

Who We Are. Hope Church is a group of ordinary people of every age and many

different backgrounds. Some have only recently started seeking Jesus while others have been Christians for many years. While still

remaining diverse we do have some significant things in common:

• We have found the person of Jesus to be the answer to our deepest needs.• We have become committed both to Him and to one another.• We love the Bible and God’s presence and look to experience both whenever we meet on Sundays and in Small Groups during the week.

We are part of Newfrontiers, a growing family of 600 churches on five continents. We are also a member of the Evangelical Alliance UK.

Where We Are Going. We want to build a significant church that demonstrates and declares the certain hope that can be found in Jesus (hence the name), that loves one another and serves the Waterfront community and Ipswich. We are on a big adventure together where ‘every life counts’ and everyone is involved.

Our vision.

We want to welcome people into the church, involve them in relationships

with God and with one another. Members are encouraged to serve, share life

and participate in the mission of the church together with the Newfrontiers

Family of Churches and local churches and organisations.

We want to encourage and equip our members to live for the Kingdom of God

in all areas of life, releasing them into God’s freedom and gifting. This also

involves raising up leaders who passionately model our values.

The ultimate goal is to bring the good news of salvation to the

Waterfront, Ipswich and surrounding area, to plant churches in the East of England

and beyond and to influence culture by bringing Kingdom values into education,

business, government, family life and social care. We want to practically

demonstrate our message of hope through generous giving, concern for

the poor and working for social justice.

This tiny book is often overlooked as we flick through the pages of the New Testament, but it’s packed full of gospel truth which we can apply to our context as a church and as individuals.

The gospel affects the way we serve and lead and it affects the way we live out our everyday lives and how we relate to our brothers and sisters in God’s family. Come and join us as we unpack these truths in June and July.

Parents, Please:Please ask your child what they’ve experienced each week and take an active interest in their thoughts. It makes a huge difference if you reassure them that it’s ok to not know and understand everything - having questions is great. Perhaps write them down for us and bring them along next week for us to talk about.

Newday is a youth event where thousands of 12-19 year olds (school year 7 upwards) camp together over 6 days. There is also a teaching stream for students and 20s and many adults come to look after the young people, or to serve the event.

Why should people go? (By Joel Virgo)“It’s a total riot! Everyone enjoys it. You get to know new people and build strong, genuine friendships that will last and make a difference in your life. But really, I want people to come to Newday to meet with God, the one who’s revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ. That’s the story for thousands of people who have come to Newday so far. Some of them don’t even believe inGod, but by the end of the week they know he’s real and they want to get to know him more.”

What is a typical day at Newday? We have morning meetings with times of worship, celebration and teaching. They are always amazing! We have friends who preach and come from all over the world. After lunch people hang out. There are sports and activities on the campsite or people go off into the city on coaches to do social action projects. Evangelism is a highlight of Newday! Then in the evenings, all age groups meet together to worship God, hear from the bible, pray and we ask the Holy Spirit to come and people to meet with God, It’s always a superb occasion. After the meeting, there are cafes, people hang out with friends and eat food... before eventually going to bed.

How did you come toknow God?My parents became Christians when I was about 4 and from then on I was taken along to church. I prayed and talked to God as a child but in my early teens I didn’t want my friends to know that I went to church and I certainly wasn’t living a God-honouring lifestyle. At 16 me and some friends went to Festival Manchester (a precursor to Newday) and it was then that I “got it” - I understood that Jesus could not only offer forgiveness and bring me into relationship with God but that my whole life could be transformed. From that point on things changed a lot, I was baptised a few weeks later and I resolved to live for Jesus in my sixth form years and the rest as they say, is history.

How did you meet Sarah? Sarah and I met at university in Southampton in 2006. We were

studying for the same degree (Social Work) and both serving in the Christian Union. We became good friends early on and having seen me bust my amazing dance moves in the clubs around Southampton, Sarah couldn’t help but marry me just after we had graduated!

How did God call you into leadership? Since I was saved at 16, I felt a burden on my life to tell others about Jesus and to encourage people who know him to live radically lives for him. This is a burden that hasn’t gone away - God has only fuelled this fire in me. Prior to moving here, Sarah and I were involved in leading a large youth work in Southampton - we learnt a lot about leadership over the years we were serving and despite the challenges we have thoroughly enjoyed serving God’s kingdom through his church - there really isn’t anything we’d rather be doing!

Last month we were excited to say hello to Tom, Sarah and their two girls. Tom has joined the team at Hope Church Ipswich and

we quizzed him on what brought them here...

“We really believe that this church has the potential to significantly impact this great town and to call many hundreds of people to Jesus”

How did God lead you to Ipswich? Maurice (who I’ve known for many years) contacted us way back at the end of 2012 to see if we might consider coming to Ipswich to serve here. At the time we said “No” - our twins were not very old at this point and we were settled where we were. A few months later Sarah and I discussed this some more and discovered that we had both been thinking about this prospect rather a lot and after praying about it, we decided to visit. Since our first visit we felt that this was the place God wanted us to be and with each subsequent visit we felt God was

dislodging us from Southampton and warming us to Ipswich and to this wonderful church.

What do you feel God has called you to Ipswich for? We really believe that this church has the potential to grow very large, to significantly impact this great town and to call many hundreds of people to Jesus - we feel we are here to play a part in seeing that happen. There’ll be challenges and hard work ahead but we’re really excited about all that God is going to do through us as a church.

The Epic Weekend

16th - 18th May 2014

Pirates vs Aliens

Epic weekend is one of those experiences that genuinely has to be experienced to fully understand just how crazy and brilliant and exhausting and exhilarating it is - and just how much it truly deserves and lives up to its name.

100ish children from as near as Wymondham and as far as Ashford descend on Letton Hall beside themselves with excitement and continue in an adrenaline and cake-fuelled state of non-stop, frenetic activity and noise for the next 48 hours: Nerf wars, go karting, bonfire, glow in the dark frisbee, good morning show, disco, gunge tank, team challenges, water fights, races, dance moves, chants, morphsuit-ed workouts, leaders covered in jelly - or chocolate or flour (or a weird combo thereof...) More fun than it seems humanly possibly to pack into

one weekend. Smiles and laughter and the most fantastic friendships.

And then there’s Epic lingo, unquestionably unique and utterly unintelligible to the uninitiated. Never heard of Pirate ‘Brine’ or the ‘Sock of Nog’?! Don’t know your Oggle-Boggles from your Ooble-Joobles?! What on earth is a CDG anyway?! Ask one of the children what Joshua chapter 1 and verse 9 is and you’ll get a tiny little flavour of what Epic is all about! And if you’re reading this paragraph without an accompanying booming, voice-over-style echo (which I have yet to dislodge from my head), you’re still not quite there yet...

But that’s just on one level.

Somewhere, somehow in the midst of all that (and perhaps even because of all that - exuberant, life-to-the-full, joyous, un-reserved living), 100ish children

Page 17: InHope Jul-Aug 2014

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

listen intently to 4 separate teaching sessions - covering 4 Epic Questions - tough, complex apologetics topics:

- Is there anybody out there? (Is there a God & how can we be sure?)- How on earth did we get here? (How did the world begin?)- Why does life hurt? (Where does suffering come from?)- Believe what you like? (What about other faiths?)

They engage with these questions readily, recognising their relevance and real-life significance and delve into what the Bible has to say on these issues. They ask searching questions of their own, and offer each other answers that leave me with nothing useful to add, only able to reflect on their profound and innate grasp of God. These children pray beautiful, poignant, heartfelt prayers, receive healing and hear comforting words from God, which they then share.

Many accept the invitation to walk through the open door (John 10:9) - literally stepping through a door as a sign of that commitment.

I had the enormous privilege of being part of the Epic team again this year, standing alongside an amazing team of leaders from our RM churches, praying for the children’s knowledge of God to drop from their heads to their hearts and for this to be the foundation they choose to stand on, now, for all time. I also had the privilege of witnessing exactly that happening - seeing God work powerfully, lovingly in open, expectant hearts.

Epic. Preparing children for their future? Perhaps. Equipping and releasing them into God’s plan for their now - absolutely.

Maurice Nightingale reports on the mini conference ‘Reign in Life’ with a number of leadership teams planting churches.

I sat looking across at a crowd of friends, each face aglow with joy and amazement. Some were cheering with delight, some were weeping with wonderment. A dear old man was sat cross-legged on the floor, cradling in his lap the feet of a person with chronic back pain. As he quietly prayed, we watched one leg grow, one centimetre, two centimetres, three centimetres. The back pain had been caused by the person’s legs being unequal in length, and as we watched with our own eyes, the legs aligned themselves and the pain was gone.

Another friend had damaged his back several years ago playing sport, and after healing prayer he was able to effortlessly touch his toes for the first time since he had been injured. One lady had persistent

neck pain and again, as she received prayer, we watched the cuffs of her blouse slowly ride up her wrist as her arms adjusted in length and the neck discomfort instantly eased.Yet another friend who received prayer had previously broken his collar bone, and it had been reset at an overlap so that one collar bone was permanently shorter than the other. I asked him the next day how it was - he said that he had been looking in the mirror all morning and the collar bones were exactly the same length. He didn’t know what to make of it - he hadn’t even brought himself to tell his wife!

Even as I write this I somehow find it quite hard to take in. I long and pray for demonstrations of God’s power to authenticate the truth of God’s word - just as it was for Jesus and the Apostles in the New Testament. And here, I was witness to repeated remarkable healings, and it was the most natural

and unhyped thing I had ever seen. Very simple, very beautiful, very wonderful. All this took place at the beginning of May, when Rachel and I travelled to Stockholm in Sweden to attend a mini-conference with Terry Virgo speaking about what it meant to ‘Reign in Life’, and to meet with a number of leadership teams planting churches in the Baltic Sea region and working closely with Relational Mission. There was Phil and Emma Whittall and their young family, church planting in Stockholm, and hosts of the event for the weekend. Dan and Elizabeth Håland, church planting in Malmö, Sweden. And Kev Jones (now proud possessor of equal length collar bones!) pioneering in Helsinki, Finland with his wife Lydia and kids. And Matt Medd with Normunds Lams and a whole bunch from their church plant in Riga, Latvia - including one lady trembling with excitement having seen her husband’s legs adjust to equal length. Then there was Tim (with the freshly flexible back!) and Rachel Heath, church planting in Tallinn, Estonia, having recently

been part of a successful church planting team in St Petersburg, Russia. All very normal people who have simply followed the call of God to another nation in obedience. And all such brilliant people. Heroes all.

Do you want to taste what it means to be on a mission in another nation like these remarkable people here? We are running a series of similar meetings across these nations, and you are invited! Maybe God will stir you to be involved with mission to another nation? Maybe he will connect your heart with others who have gone to another nation, and you can support them from home base? Or maybe you just want to expand your horizons and go on an adventure?

Well, have a look at the opportunities above and see if you might be able to come along with us!

I was list-holder and walkie-talkie bearer on a van for the Queensway clean up and had a great day lugging people’s unwanted stuff to the van and then unloading it into the skips alongside some guys from the local area. We had fun, the driver hooted and waved at friends and told me about some of the people we were meeting. We worked hard and many of the residents enthusiastically expressed their gratitude and appreciation to us. One of the guys said ‘Why can’t the world always be like this’ to which his mate replied ‘ because everyone is so selfish’, ‘but maybe it can....’ I joined in.

Through the day we chatted and I got a glimpse into their family and some of the challenges they had faced as well as sharing moments of my own life. Later and elsewhere I chatted with a wonderful woman who had recently committed her life to following Jesus and made some radical changes. I love hearing stories like this as the encounter with the Lord is so

fresh and real; as I rushed off she asked ‘What about you, do you have a story?’, ‘Of course, everyone has a story’. When we listen to a bit of someone’s story it makes them more of a real person – with struggles, aspirations, history.

Then it struck me that we who love Jesus have a story that becomes inextricably interwoven with His Story – a story of redemption, of amazing love, abundance grace, of transformation, healing and hope. This is the story that we can share with others who have no comprehension of ‘Christianity - my story part of His story. Everyone has a story, we need to listen to their stories and tell ours and see what the Lord can do.

Did you know that you can access rotas on the website and set your rota reminders to be sent to your email whenever suits you best? Here’s how to do it:

To view your upcoming rota duties:1. Login to Hope Church Ipswich

2. Click on ‘MY AREA’ Menu

3. Go to ‘MY AREA’ > ‘MY INVOLVEMENT’ > ‘MY REMINDERS’ (Menu unfolds)

4. You will then visualize your upcoming rota duties

They are spread through 3 columns: Date / Event / Duty.

If you click on the name of the rota that appears in the right hand column, it will take you to visualize the entire rota (This is useful to get a bigger picture and helpful if you cannot attend and need to arrange a swap, as you can then click on other persons names and get a pop-up of their contact details).

5. Click ‘VIEW MY REMINDERS’ to return to the previous page.

To set your rota reminders:1. Starting at the ‘MY REMINDERS’ page, just under your name you will see this;

Rota Reminders

send me an email reminder of my rota duties days before the event.

2. If you want reminders sending to you by email, you will need to tick the box and choose a setting from 14 days before the event up to the very day of event. If you do not wish to receive reminder just untick the box.

PIPSWEBTIPAs a member of Hope Church Ipswich, you have access to the online directory within the Hope Church Ipswich website. This is a very useful tool as it provides you with other members contact details at a click of the mouse!

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that as our church grows it gets more difficult to match all those names to faces in church on Sunday… And so the ability to add a photo to your contact details is a great way for people to immediately recognise you.

SUBMIT APORTRAITPHOTO

Here’s what you would have to do to SUBMIT A PHOTO to your record:

1. Login to Hope Church Ipswich website (if you need to renew your password contact the office).

3. Scroll down to PERSONAL DETAILS and click on ‘Change photo’

4. A window will pop up with a ‘browse’ button – click here to select your photo and click ‘SAVE’

5. You can submit a personal message to the office just below the photo.

6. You can also add a family photo by clicking the leftmost tab and doing the same as above.

7. Don’t forget to enter your password at the foot of each page you make changes to in order to update your profile before logging out.

Your photo submission will come through to the office where we can approve it for other members to see. If you’d rather, you can send a photo in to the office by email to [email protected]

We are putting together a small recipe book that we can sell to raise money towards TOTS. We would like any suggestions you have for quick easy meals/cakes/desserts.

Please can you forward any contributions [email protected] or speak to Angela Ryan

From englandto new englandWhen the Lord led our family to England in 2011, we didn’t know how long we’d be there. We only knew He’d clearly opened that door for us! That He wanted us to attend Hope Church was equally clear! And during our time there, we met many marvelous people, spent time with our English relatives, and God taught us much of His faithfulness!

Just over two years later, we felt stirrings about returning to the States. So in winter 2013, we had a family prayer meeting – open to God’s will. Because of the life-changing nature of the decision, we asked Him to make our next step clear.

Within a couple of weeks, Paul received a job offer from the U.S. that far bettered his salary in the same profession. It was unmistakably the sign we’d asked for!

NorthWe cannot believe it has been 3 years since our move back to Norfolk!

We have been on quite an adventure since then. First of all we have had another amazing little boy called Jeremiah and he and his brother and sister are giving us much delight. Livvy (6) loves her dancing and has some wonderful friends and Josiah (4) is a boy who loves to emulate his hero King Peter from the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Most recently we have moved into Wymondham where we are at Hope Community Church and I am an Elder in a family orientated church which is proving to be a lot of fun. This is also combined with being a Director in a Civil Engineering company which makes me very busy, but not as busy as Charis who continues as a full time mum to our three wonderful children, alongside serving in lots of areas in the church and making lots of friends in the wider community.

We love hearing about all that God is doing in Ipswich and look forward to catching up very soon.

Much love to you all,Mark and Charis

The Moss Family have returned from Malawi. Julia Jolley caught up with how they are settling in. ‘God is good: all the time, all the time: God is good!’ it’s a well worn call and response in Malawi and over the last months we have had to choose to trust that this is true and after that we have seen the Lord guide and provide in wonderful ways. It’s felt like surfi ng, waiting for the next wave of sorting, selling, packing, emotion, panic, goodbyes, complexity of arrangements… and then aiming to ride the wave rather than be overcome by it. Having lived all our family life in Malawi (for 9 years) in the big open spaces, sun, culturally mixed school community, often with water and electricity cuts, coming to England with all the technology, advertising and squished-

?Our priority after moving back was finding a good, solid church! The first we tried featured exciting worship and friendly people, but wasn’t right for us. The second was Scripturally spot-on; but again, wasn’t quite right.

Thank-you to our friends who prayed for God’s leading for our new church – our third attempt is becoming our new home! It has the winning combination of sound doctrine, missions and community outreach, anointed worship, and friendly, welcoming people!

We hold our family at Hope Church in our hearts, and count our season in England as a privilege and gift! Our lives are fuller for the wonderful friendships we made in Britain.

Blessings to all!

Carol & all the Savages!

Hello Hope Church Family!

I am missing you all LOTS, but not the weather!

I have arrived in the Philippines again, and have already had the chance to see some wonderful scenery’s, catch up with old friends and starting to make new ones. I am lodging at a families house I know from last time, (very modest facilities, but lots of fun and delicious food!).

I am settling into Crossroads Church which Edson Pastors. I am taking my time just visiting various children’s homes in and around the local area to

“Thanks all for your support, thoughts and prayers, you are always in mine. And if anyone wants to visit, just get in contact!”

Paul & Ali CherryThis small group gathers the great and the good of the hinterland known locally as “Kesgrave”. For “Kesgrave” read “pretty much anywhere you can go east of Ipswich without getting your feet wet”. We meet every Wednesday alternating between “normal” small group meetings and socials. The socials are a mix of men’s evenings, ladies evenings and family events. The venue rotates around people’s houses; the aim being to allow as many people (i.e. those with kids), to make it.Wednesday evenings. Kesgrave / Woodbridge. [email protected]
