the space in between: a place for more intimate

interaction{ {

There are over 20,000 known species of bees, but the

most commonly known in the US are honey bees, bumblebees, and

carpenter bees. Those three species interact in very different ways. Honey bees

live in large communities and exhibit highly complex social behavior. Their hives can contain

up to almost 40,000 bees. Bumblebee colonies are smaller, typically 50 to 200 bees at peak population. Their

nests are simple and limited by the size of an existing cavity. Solitary bees like carpenter bees create nests in wood or

in tunnels in the ground. While solitary females each make individual nests, some species prefer to make

nests near others, giving the appearance to the casual observer that they are social. The Buzzz

coffee shop is organized around the same principles: three levels offer different

chances at social interaction but are all united by a living wall that rises

up through the stairwell.
