My instruction for this block, is to piece it. But, think of this, make two pinwheel blocks, take one of them and cut out a circle, with a seam allowance, place the circle on top of the second pinwheel block, and twist it so the colors are opposite, then appliqué the circle onto the pinwheel block. Cut away the back of the circle. That would be easier, I think.

Like the previous instructions for B02, this block could be done as two four patch blocks and cutting a circle from one, positioning the circle onto the second four patch and then appliqué the circle to the second four patch. There’s always more that one way to do something. Choose the way that is the easiest for you.

Another Opps! Block. My border around the block should have been done with the print fabric and not the muslin. Also, my border could have been a little narrower. The .pdf pattern has been redrafted to reflect a block that looks more like Jane’s block.

Some people I know, did this block as an appliqué. They pieced the background with the sashing and then appliquéd the diamonds. I found that paper foundation worked perfectly, and the diamond tips were sharp and clean. But, like I said before, do what is best and easiest for you.

It looks like Jane appliquéd tops to mountain shapes and then appliquéd the shapes to the center area, and lastly appliquéd the diamonds to the corners. On my block, I choose to appliqué melon shapes in a circle to the background and then appliqué the diamonds to the corners.

Difficulty Medium Hard (not too hard, but a little)
Pieced and Appliquéd

This block can be a little intimidating. But, taken step by step it is achievable. First make the four half square triangle blocks. Then attach the large cross pieces to the squares, stopping ¼” from the inside point of the corner squares. Then using a “y” seam, sew the cross pieces together, again stopping ¼” from both ends of the seams. Turn under the ¼” seam allowance in the center, on the ends of the cross pieces. Lastly appliqué the square under the center. This could be called “reverse appliqué”, but it’s really just appliquéing the cross pieces to the background piece. (Everybody flips out when they hear the words ‘reverse applique’.) I wish I had used a stripe, like Jane did.

When you begin this block, you will first appliqué the half melons to the corner background pieces. Then, use these corner pieces when using the paper foundation pattern, in place of the foundation pattern corners. You will notice the pattern given here is more like the original “Jane” design.
Applique the melon pieces to background fabric, Then use for B1,C1,D1 and E1, when sewing the paper foundation.
