Day 1: Faircity Quatermain Hotel, Johannesburg (Wed, 6 Sept)
Johannesburg
Johannesburg is one of Africa’s biggest and most vibrant cities. It is the economic capital of Africa and the gateway to
Southern Africa. Although not as famous as other South African destinations, there is plenty to do in Johannesburg
and nearby Pretoria. The old city is a multi-cultural mixture of traditional medicine shops, Chinese restaurants, taxi
ranks and ultra-modern skyscrapers. There are excellent museums, art galleries and organised tours of historical and
political interest. The shopping is Southern Africa’s best and the many restaurants cater for all tastes. The nearby
township of Soweto is Johannesburg’s most famous and popular tourist attraction.

Day 2: Faircity Quatermain Hotel, Johannesburg (Thu, 7 Sept)
Day Itinerary
Today after breakfast at the hotel, you will embark on an Apartheid Museum tour followed by evening tour and
dinner at Lesedi Cultural Village.
The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. The exhibits have been
assembled and organised by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers, historians and designers. They
include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories
that are part of the epic saga known as apartheid.
For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the
Apartheid Museum is fundamental. The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming
to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own.
This afternoon you’ll embark on a tour of Lesedi Cultural Village. This renowned village is located in the heart of the
African bushveld, amid the rocky hills within the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site. You’ll discover the
fascinating cultures and traditions of the people of South Africa, visit five traditional homesteads inhabited by Zulu,
Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele tribes who live according to tribal folklore and traditions of their ancestors. “Our
culture is the light of our nation – whoever walks here amongst our cultures at Lesedi can also see the light.” Dinner
included.

Day 3: Faircity Quatermain Hotel, Johannesburg (Fri, 8 Sept)
Day Itinerary
Today after breakfast, you will be met by our representative and embark on a Soweto Tour with lunch in Soweto and
then visit to Orlando West School.
Soweto is a sprawling township, or more accurately, a cluster of townships on the south-western flank of
Johannesburg. Soweto was created in the 1930s, with Orlando the first township established. In the 1950s, more
black people were relocated there from 'black spots' in the inner city - black neighbourhoods which the apartheid
government had reserved for whites.
P a g e | 6
With a population of over 2 million, the township is the biggest black urban settlement in Africa with a rich political
history. Soweto was the centre of political campaigns aimed at the overthrow of the apartheid state. The 1976
student uprising started in Soweto and spread to the rest of the country. Many of the sights on this route therefore
have political significance. From the footbridge of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest on the continent,
one can get a panoramic view of Soweto. Visit The June 16 Memorial Acre faces Morris Isaacson High School in
central Jabavu, Soweto, one of the schools from which students marched to lead the Soweto Uprising of 1976.
Opened in mid-2015, the memorial has been designed to form the start of the so-called "June 16 Trail", which
includes other key sites of that most tumultuous time, such as Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and
Museum. Nelson Mandela's humble little house in Orlando West, Soweto, now called the Mandela Family Museum,
is an interesting stopover for those keen to imbibe a slice of authentic history on the world's most famous former
prisoner. The museum, a house comprising four inter-leading rooms, contains a rather eclectic assortment of
memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family as well as a collection of honorary doctorates
bestowed on Nelson Mandela from universities and institutions around the world. You can also have a glimpse of the
mansion belonging to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in an affluent part of Orlando West. Archbishop Desmond Tutu's
house and the Sisulu residences are in the same neighbourhood. Return in late afternoon for free evening.

Day 4: Ivory Tree Game Lodge, Pilanesberg National Park (Sat 9 Sept)
Pilanesberg National Park
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve lies inside a 1.3 billion-year- old volcanic complex and offers a wide variety of
beautiful landscapes. Pilanesberg is home to a great diversity of plants and animals, including the Big 5, wild dog and
360 species of bird. Being on the Highveld, it is malaria free. It has great game drives for both day trippers and
visitors staying in the various camps. If you like to mix a little glitz and glamour with your wildlife, South Africa’s
leading resort, Sun City, is only minutes away.
Day Itinerary
Today after breakfast, check-out with your luggage, you will be met by our representative and will embark on your
safari journey. You have a 2 hour drive to Ivory Tree Game Lodge where you will spend the next 2 nights.
A mere two hour drive north of Johannesburg and Pretoria and you'll find yourself in the tranquil heart of the bush.
Pilanesberg National Park is home to the gargantuan shapes of Africa's giants - elephants, rhino and buffalo. If you're
fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of the stealthy leopard or lion, stately king of the bush. Wild country indeed, but
without the risk of malaria.
IVORY TREE GAME LODGE: 5 STAR LODGE SITUATED IN THE MALARIA FREE PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK
The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Ivory Tree Game Lodge in Pilanesberg Game Reserve – a
fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1.3 billion years ago. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is
one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique
geological feature. The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills – the formation rises from the
surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the “Pilanesberg Game Reserve Alkaline Ring
Complex”. Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline
ring complex. A number of rare (but not necessarily economically important) minerals occur in the park. Pilanesberg
National Park rates high amongst the world’s outstanding geological phenomena. Pilanesberg Game Reserve has
survived ages of erosion and stands high above the surrounding bushveld plains. The early presence of man can be
seen in the numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that are scattered throughout the park. The park exists within the
transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as “Bushveld”.
Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.
Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found
cohabitation with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.

Day 7: Sun Square Cape Town Gardens, Cape Town (Tue, 12 Sept)
Day Itinerary
This morning after breakfast, you will be met by our representative and will embark on a Table Mountain, Cape Point
and Cape Peninsula Tour.
Table Mountain: By the late 1870’s, several of Cape Town’s more prominent citizens had suggested the introduction
of a railway line to the top of Table Mountain. Plans to implement a proposed rack railway got under way but the
outbreak of the Anglo-Boer war put a halt to these efforts. By 1912, with a strong desire to gain easy access to the
top of Table Mountain, the Cape Town City Council commissioned an engineer to investigate the various options for
public transport to the top. The new cableway was officially opened on October 4, 1997: the anniversary of the
original launch, almost 70 years earlier.
We travel along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, stopping at a Llandudno look-out point
before continuing to Hout Bay, a quaint village and fishing harbour with magnificent mountain views and beach. On
through Chapman's Peak, one of the world's most breathtaking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope
Nature Reserve, which has magnificent fynbos vegetation, birdlife, endemic antelope species and zebra, historic
lighthouses and shipwrecks. Cape Point is perceived to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Funicular is included.
After lunch at a nearby restaurant, we go on to historic Simon's Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture,
a naval base and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach. Boulders Penguin Colony (included in cost)
is home to a growing colony of the vulnerable African Penguin. Wooden walkways allow visitors to view the
penguins in their natural habitat and there is also an information centre.

Day 8: Sun Square Cape Town Gardens, Cape Town (Wed, 13 Sept)
Day Itinerary
Today after breakfast you will be met by our representative and we will head out to Robben Island followed by a
winelands visit with lunch.
ROBBEN ISLAND: Formerly the site of a political prison and before that leper colony, this well preserved historic
landmark was recently established as a museum and national monument heralding the triumph of freedom, dignity
and determination over humiliation and oppression. Experience the conditions of incarceration, view Nelson
Mandela’s maximum-security prison cell (Cell 5), and see the lime quarries where he and many other prisoners later
developed eye problems due to the sun’s reflection off the lime surfaces. While serving hard time, these quarries
offered opportunities for prisoners to discuss strategy, freedom and the future.

“No easy road to freedom” was a central theme in most of the Mass Democratic Movement’s campaigns, from the
early days through to the late 1980s. Any understanding of present day conditions in South Africa is greatly
enhanced by looking at past injustice, the legacy of the struggle and the promise of reconstruction and development
initiatives under way at present. The tour commences with a ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island. (weather
permitting). From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and
imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South
Africa and of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island
and of the prison hosted by former political prisoners.
After Robben Island, drive to the Winelands for lunch and winetasting in the historic Wine Regions that have brought
South Africa acclaim and awards, Worldwide.
Return to the hotel.
