RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM 2018
INSTITUTE OF TRANSLATIONAL AND STRATIFIED MEDICINE (ITSMed)
We are delighted to welcome you to celebrate the opening of the Derriford Research Facility – the new, state-of-the-art headquarters of the University of Plymouth’s Institute of Translational and Stratified Medicine ITSMed.
Plymouth is steeped in a history of pioneering and discovery. To advance this journey today in the field of medical science, it is essential to cultivate powerful relationships and collaborations with like-minded peers, to successfully tackle health issues through high quality research.
This symposium brings together the scientific, medical and business communities, to grow a geographical hub of world-class expertise and research excellence in the South West for the benefit of patients, the public, and for a positive economic impact.
The day promises to deliver a rich programme of insight and discussion and we are particularly honoured to welcome our keynote presenters Professor Dame Pamela Shaw, Vice-President and Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health at the University of Sheffield, and Dr Mark Fidock, Vice President, Precision Medicine Laboratories within the IMED Biotech Unit, AstraZeneca.
In addition to hearing of the University’s world-leading biomedical and clinical research from the academics directing our investigations, you also have the opportunity to network to a backdrop of research posters and take a tour of our new facility.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the delegates, presenters and sponsors of this year’s symposium and wish you and intriguing and enjoyable visit.
Professor Oliver Hanemann, Director, ITSMed

Translational research to develop new therapeutics, diagnostics, interventions and preventative approaches for patient and public benefit.ITSMed brings together scientists, clinicians and expertise from across the spectrum of scientific discovery, medical research and health technology, to conduct world-class laboratory and clinical research.
The Institute’s collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment and integrative ‘bench to bedside and back’ approach enables development of new therapeutics, diagnostics, interventions and approaches to prevent, detect and treat devastating diseases, enhance patient outcomes, and improve global healthcare.
The Institute hosts two major research groups, Biomedical Research Group and Clinical Trials and Population Studies Group, with combined facilities and resources that cluster researchers with recognised expertise from across the University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and beyond.
ITSMed is also home to the University of Plymouth’s internationally renowned Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence.
Our focus is on three core research themes of: Cancer; Infection, Immunity and Inflammation; and Clinical Neuroscience, facilitated by cross-cutting expertise in Diagnostics, Clinical Trials and Public Health research.
This translational research is facilitated by the University of Plymouth’s UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit (PenCTU), Medical Statistics and Systems Biology Centre teams.
Our research strengths were confirmed by the excellent results from our submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 which ranked us first in the UK for quality of research outputs in clinical medicine, above medical schools at Oxford and Cambridge.
To reflect our role as a research-led University with a major commitment to medicine and healthcare, we have built the Derriford Research Facility. Purposefully located next to our Medical and Dental Schools at Plymouth Science Park and neighbouring University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, the DRF will enhance powerful collaborations between our research teams, clinicians, and biotech and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate progress and synergise expertise and resources.
This prestigious facility serves as the new headquarters for ITSMed, providing the high-level technology and laboratory space required to perpetuate our momentum and make a lasting positive impact on the medical landscape.

Vice-President and Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health, Sheffield University.
Director, Sheffield Institute for Translational NeuroscienceProfessor Shaw graduated in Medicine with 1st Class Honours from the University of Newcastle in 1979. She undertook her MRCP and Specialist Training in Neurology training in Newcastle. In 1988 she was awarded an MD with commendation for her work on the neurological complications of coronary bypass surgery. After an intermediate fellowship award from the Wellcome Trust, she was awarded a Wellcome Senior Fellowship in Clinical Science which she held from 1991 -2000. KEYNOTE Dr Mark Fidock
Vice President, Precision Medicine Laboratories within the IMED Biotech Unit, AstraZeneca.
Drug development in the era of Precision Medicine Dr Fidock received his PhD from the University of East Anglia, UK in Molecular Pharmacology. He gained extensive experience of drug development whilst at Pfizer R&D UK, where he led Biomarker and Translational Medicine activities across multiple therapeutic areas. In 2013, Mark joined AstraZeneca appointed to the role of Head of Precision Medicine Laboratories, a multidisciplinary team developing companion diagnostic tests deployed across early and late phase clinical development in order to identify patients that are most likely to benefit from targeted medicines.
