Dear Babinda P-12 State School Community,
Sumo Robotic’s Champions
Last Saturday, students who are part of our Robotics Club,
competed in the Annual Sumo Robotics challenge in Cairns.
With 200 registered student competitors from schools across
FNQ it was a very busy day. I’d like to congratulate Brock
Morris and Charlie Cooper on winning the all Babinda Grand Final as well as Mr
Hoad and the entire team for bringing home the Primary Division Trophy. A huge
thanks to Mr Hoad for his time and effort as well as to the parents and families who
came along and supported our students on the day. Well Done!
Easter Parade
On Wednesday, students from our Prep, 1 and 2 classes, spread the Easter spirit
around town with their Easter basket parade. The students walked down and
through the town, sharing their Easter cheer through some stories and songs at
Abbeyfield and in the main street. The students visited many of the local
businesses and the Library and had
stories read to them. I thank all of these
community leaders for getting in the
spirit and for their support. The parade
culminated with lunch at ANZAC park.
The morning was great fun for the
students and for everyone involved.
Thanks to the teachers for organising
this and the parent helpers who came
along.
Easter Holidays
It has been another great start to the year and the term has flown by. The Autumn
break commences this week and I wish all of our students and families a safe
holiday. I look forward to seeing everybody back, ready for another fantastic, action
packed term after the holidays. Next term some of the big events we will be holding
include our cross country and athletics carnivals, full tutoring for students on our
performance pact will continue, guest presenters will visit as part of our digital
entrepreneur program and students in years 3,5,7 and 9 will sit the NAPLAN exams.
Until next time
Yours in schooling

Principal
2017 Next Step survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2016. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by
Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or
forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2017.
Further information on Next Step is available online at www.education.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or on toll free telephone 1800 068 587.

2017 Sumo Robotics challenge
Babinda P – 12 State school fielded 6 teams in the QSITE Sumo Robotics on
Saturday the 25th March and we had 1 team in the high school division and 5 in the
primary school division. Our High school team made it to the 3rd round and our
primary teams made it through to have two teams in the grand final. Which sort of
makes it easy to know who the winner was, yes, it was Babinda and we brought
the perpetual champion trophy back to school and it will stay here until the end of
next term.
As the coach/ facilitator of the
robotics club I would like to say how proud of our whole team I
am and congratulations team on a job well done. Our team is now known as the “Babinda
Bot Builders” or individually the robots are named in order as “3B01”, “3B02”,
“3B03” etc. Please keep an eye on the newsletter for more info on the next competition.

Host a Japanese exchange student in your home!
Open your home and hearts to a Japanese exchange student and become an AFS host family!
Your AFS exchange student becomes a member of your family. They live as you do and experience your family’s life. AFS has supported Australian host families for 55+ years and is committed to providing meaningful and ongoing benefits to Australian volunteer host families and the exchange students they host.
AFS host families come in all shapes and sizes, from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and live in urban and regional Australia. All host families are different; that's what makes each student’s exchange experience unique!
AFS exchange students from Japan arrive in April for a nine month program, but you can also host for a few weeks only! To register your interest or learn more about becoming a volunteer AFS host family and the comprehensive support that AFS provides, contact the AFS Hosting Team today on 0292 150 077 / [email protected] / www.afs.org.au/host
In February and July each year AFS welcomes students and volunteers
from across the globe to experience the Australian way of life from 8
weeks to 11 months, to either attend a local high school or volunteer at a
local community organisation.
AFS places each participant with an Australian host family who have
volunteered to open their home and hearts, and welcome a new family
member into their lives. Hosting an AFS participant is your family’s chance
to experience a new culture in your own home and develop friendships
that last a lifetime.
Who is eligible to host?
There is no typical AFS Host Family. AFS families cover a broad spectrum
of ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, both rural
and urban. Families can have young or teenage children at home, be
empty nesters with adult children, or be couples with no children.
Single adults and single parents are also welcome, as are same sex
couples. All host families are different, and that's what makes each
participant's exchange experience unique! The key to being a host family
is the word 'family'. Your new son or daughter becomes a member of your
family; they live as you do and experience your life. During the program,
AFS provides a support network who are available to help support both
your family and the participant.
What AFS is really looking for is a warm, caring and safe
environment. In return, we do our best to match you with a student or
volunteer compatible with your family’s interests, personalities, and way of
life.
To host, you must be aged 25+, have a valid Working With Children Check
and be willing to go through our application process which includes an
in-home interview.
What hosting options are there?
We offer a number of different hosting durations and commitments, based on what works best for your family…
What is required of an AFS Host Family?
As a host family, you will provide your participant
with:
• The opportunity to participate in your family’s
daily life
• The same care, support, and comfort you would
any other member of your family
• A bed (not convertible or inflatable in nature,
though sharing a room with a sibling of the same
gender close in age is fine)
• Three meals a day.
