What does HCC Central offer? Certificates
Basic Welding Helper: 16 credits
Advanced Welding: 40 credits
The Welding Technology program is designed to provide comprehensive theoretical and
hands-on training to prepare you for immediate employment in the welding industry. The
Basic certificate prepares you with the most-essential skills for entry-level employment,
which can be completed in one semester (Fall or Spring). The Advanced certificate covers
more complex areas in MIG, TIG and Pipe Welding techniques. It can be completed in one
year. There is increased demand for skilled welders in such fields as construction, oil and gas
and shipbuilding. HCC Central’s outstanding welding program has become a huge source of
industry talent in the greater Houston area.
How long is the program? Basic welding: One semester. Advanced welding: Two
semesters (if attending full time).
Where do I start? Apply online: central.hccs.edu. No TSI test required. Contact Jose
Sauceda, Division Chair, at [email protected] / 713.718.6898.
What is welding? Welders join metal parts. They also fill holes, indentions, or seams of
metal products, using hand-held welding equipment.
Where would I work? You can work outdoors, often in inclement weather, or indoors,
sometimes in a confined area. You may work on a scaffold high off the ground, and occasionally
you must lift heavy objects and work in awkward positions. You’ll probably work full time and
overtime is common.
How much can I earn? $17.04 an hour; $35,450 a year (Median salary - 2010 Bureau
of Labor Statistics). Job Growth: 15% annually.
Welding jobs await... if you have skills.
