What does HVAC mean? Heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration

mechanics and installers work on heating, ventilation, cooling and refrigeration systems that

control the air quality in many types of buildings.

Where would I work? You would mostly work in residential homes, schools,

hospitals, office buildings or factories. Your work sites may be very hot or cold because the

heating and cooling system you’ll repair is broken.

How much can I earn? $20.45 an hour; $42,530 a year (Median salary - 2010

What are sign interpreters? Sign interpreters convert information from one

language to another. Interpreters work in spoken or sign language.

Where would I work? Schools, hospitals, courtrooms, churches and conference

centers and more. Many translators are self-employed contract workers, have flexible

schedules and work from home.

How much can I earn? $25.00 an hour (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Job Growth:

What is a Cosmetologist? Cosmetologists provide hair and beauty services to

enhance their clients’ appearance. You’ll provide scalp and facial treatments and makeup

analysis. You also may clean and style wigs and hairpieces, or actively sell skin-care products.

The field encompasses several occupations, including hairstylist and hairdresser, shampooer,

skin care specialist and nail technician.

Where would I work? You’ll work mostly in salons, although you also may work in

a spas, hotels or resorts. Some cosmetologists lease booth space in other people’s salons.

Others manage salons or open their own after several years of experience.

experience, while also ensuring that an establishment is run efficiently and profitably.

Restaurant managers are responsible for the daily operations of restaurants and other

establishments that prepare and serve food and beverages to customers.

and evenings is common.

Certificates: Intermediate Machine Technology: 31 credits; Basic Machine Technology:

17 credits; The Machining Technology program is designed to meet industry’s continued and

growing need for trained machine operators and programmers. The program prepares you for

You’ll train to become competent support technicians for employment in the field of

manufacturing engineering and related occupations. The machine shop at HCC Central

has more than 40 pieces of manual equipment (such as turning and milling machines),

computerized numerical controls (CNC), six robotic arms, a computer integrated manufacturing

(CIM) cell, hydraulic and pneumatic trainers and personal computers with up-to-date training

materials.

What is VAST Academy? VAST Academy provides comprehensive transition

postsecondary certificate programs, ore-college “bridge” courses and support services to

“differently abled” individuals with disabilities. Students with “ability” levels ranging from

2.5 to 8th grade and above benefit from our comprehensive student support services and

vocational courses that lead to a meaningful workforce credentials.

What does HCC Central offer? Certificates

Basic Welding Helper: 16 credits

Advanced Welding: 40 credits

The Welding Technology program is designed to provide comprehensive theoretical and

hands-on training to prepare you for immediate employment in the welding industry. The

Basic certificate prepares you with the most-essential skills for entry-level employment,

which can be completed in one semester (Fall or Spring). The Advanced certificate covers

more complex areas in MIG, TIG and Pipe Welding techniques. It can be completed in one

year. There is increased demand for skilled welders in such fields as construction, oil and gas

and shipbuilding. HCC Central’s outstanding welding program has become a huge source of

industry talent in the greater Houston area.

How long is the program? Basic welding: One semester. Advanced welding: Two

semesters (if attending full time).

What is welding? Welders join metal parts. They also fill holes, indentions, or seams of

metal products, using hand-held welding equipment.

Where would I work? You can work outdoors, often in inclement weather, or indoors,

sometimes in a confined area. You may work on a scaffold high off the ground, and occasionally

you must lift heavy objects and work in awkward positions. You’ll probably work full time and

overtime is common.

How much can I earn? $17.04 an hour; $35,450 a year (Median salary - 2010 Bureau

of Labor Statistics). Job Growth: 15% annually.

2. If you are returning to HCC after a year or more:• Students who have not enrolled for two or more consecutive regular semesters (fall, spring) at HCC must complete the core-residency questions and satisfy all applicable requirements for residency again prior to registration.
