intheirhands.ThebrotherstheypresentforCouncilOffice,ifelected,willleadtheCouncilintothenextfraternalyear.ShouldyouknowofabrotherthatyoubelievewouldmakeanexcellentCouncilOfficerpleaselettheNominatingCommitteeknowsothattheycanspeakwiththem.TheNominatingCommitteeisFinancial

ThesecondimportantitemthatiscomingupistheCouncilelectionsattheJune14thbusinessmeeting.ThisisthetimetoelecttheCouncilOfficersforthenextfraternalyear.Itisimportantthatallbrothersattendthismeetingandvote.ThedirectiontheCounciltakesandwhatitwillbecomestartswiththeelectionofourCouncilOfficers.YouwillconferonthemtheimportanttasksofcontinuingtobuildtheCouncil,improvingitsactivitiesandimprovingitsservicetotheparishandthecommunity.

TheFeastoftheAscensionofourLordGodandSaviorJesusChristiscelebratedeachyearonthefortiethdayaftertheGreatandHolyFeastofPascha(Easter).SincethedateofPaschachangeseachyear,thedateoftheFeastoftheAscensionchanges.TheFeastisalwayscelebratedonaThursday.TheFeastitselfcommemorateswhen,onthefortiethdayafterHisResurrection,JesusledHisdisciplestotheMountofOlives,andafterblessingthemandaskingthemtowaitforthefulfillmentofthepromiseoftheHolySpirit,Heascendedintoheaven.ThestoryoftheAscensionofourLord,celebratedasoneoftheTwelveGreatFeastsoftheChurch,isfoundinthebookoftheActsoftheApostles1:3-11.ItisalsomentionedintheGospelsofMark(16:19)andLuke(24:50-53).ThemomentoftheAscensionistoldinonesentence:"HewasliftedupbeforetheireyesinacloudwhichtookHimfromtheirsight"(Acts1:9).ChristmadeHislastappearanceonearth,fortydaysafterHisResurrectionfromthedead.TheActsoftheApostlesstatesthatthediscipleswereinJerusalem.JesusappearedbeforethemandcommandedthemnottodepartfromJerusalem,buttowaitforthe"PromiseoftheFather".Hestated,"YoushallbebaptizedwiththeHolySpiritnotmanydaysfromnow"(Acts1:5).Continuedonnextpage-seeAscension

Atourlastmeeting,wediscussedthesubjectofaLadiesAuxiliary.EstablishingaLadiesAuxiliaryisnottheeasiesttask,asitmustgothroughanumberofsteps;receiveapprovalofthePastorandtheStateDeputy.ThefirststepistodetermineinterestinestablishinganAuxiliary.AletterisbeingpreparedthatwillbesentoutbysnailmailseekingtheinterestinestablishinganAuxiliary.Therewillbeinformationinthatletter,bothproandcon,andthestepsthatneedtobecompleted.Whenyoureceivethatletterpleaserespondsothatweknowtobeginornottobegin.

TheNationalPurpleHeartHallofHonoristhenation’ssolerepositorydedicatedtothepreservationandcollectionoftherecordsofPurpleHeartrecipients.ThemissionoftheHallofHonoristhecollectionandpreservationoftherecordofPurpleHeartrecipientsinallbranchesofserviceandacrossallgenerationstoensurethatallrecipientsarerepresented.ThePurpleHeartHallofHonorislocatedinTempleHill,NYnearthesiteoftheContinentalArmy’slastencampmentinthewinterof1782-83.Withthelargenumberofveteransinthearea,theCouncilinconjunctionwithSantaLuciaAssemblyisbeginningaprojecttoenrolllocalPurpleHeartrecipientsintheHallofHonor.IfyouwouldliketohelpwiththisprojectpleasecontactGKBobCuddy(robertcuddyjr@comcast.net)

AfterJesusgavetheseinstructions,HeledthedisciplestotheMountofOlives.Here,HecommissionedthemtobeHiswitnesses"inJerusalem,andinallJudeaandSamaria,andtotheendoftheearth"(Acts1:8).ItisalsoatthistimethatthedisciplesweredirectedbyChristto"goandmakedisciplesofallnations,baptizingtheminthenameoftheFatherandtheSonandtheHolySpirit"(Matthew28:19).JesusalsotoldthemthatHewouldbewiththemalways,"eventotheendoftheworld"(Matthew28:20).Asthediscipleswatched,JesusliftedupHishands,blessedthem,andthenwastakenupoutoftheirsight(Luke24:51;Acts1:9).Twoangelsappearedtothemandaskedthemwhytheyweregazingintoheaven.Thenoneoftheangelssaid,"ThissameJesus,whichistakenupfromyouintoheaven,shallsocomeinlikemannerasyouhaveseenHimgoingintoheaven"(Acts1:11).

TheiconofTheAscensionofOurLordisajoyousicon.Itispaintedwithbrightcolors.ChristisshownascendinginHisgloryinamandorla1.Amandorlaisadesignwhichisalmond-shapedorround.Insidethemandorlaisthefigureofaholyperson.ChristblessestheassemblywithHisrighthand2.InHisleftisascroll.Thescrollisasymbolofteaching3.ThisiconshowsthattheLordinheavenisthesourceofblessing.Inaddition,Jesusisthesourceofknowledge.TheiconremindsusthatChristcontinuestobethesourceoftheteachingandmessageoftheChurch,blessingandguidingthosetowhomHehasentrustedhiswork.

ThemonthofMayisthe"monthwhichthepietyofthefaithfulhasespeciallydedicatedtoOurBlessedLady,"anditistheoccasionfora"movingtributeoffaithandlovewhichCatholicsineverypartoftheworld[pay]totheQueenofHeaven.DuringthismonthChristians,bothinchurchandintheprivacyofthehome,offeruptoMaryfromtheirheartsanespeciallyferventandlovinghomageofprayerandveneration.Inthismonth,too,thebenefitsofGod'smercycomedowntousfromherthroneingreaterabundance".ThisChristiancustomofdedicatingthemonthofMaytotheBlessedVirginaroseattheendofthe13thcentury.Inthisway,theChurchwasabletoChristianizethesecularfeasts,whichwerewonttotakeplaceatthattime.Inthe16thcentury,booksappearedandfosteredthisdevotion.
