Gang of girls, who were in the play area had this to say about Green Acres:
“I love GA because…” (captured verbatim by Sripriya, R20)

my friends” - Ashley, (8 yrs), A8

cording to them, “Green Acres has lots of greenery. We have so many parties and such a big ground to play”
Let us see what some older kids and adults have to say about GA:
“It’s not solitary here and I have so many great friends” – Sanjana, R 25
“When we came initially, it was so lonely here. Impressed by the development in Green Acres. Love the fact that
we have a convenience store. And, Amphi theatre brought life to Green Acres” – Krishna, R 20
“People, Greenery, pollution free place – that’s what I like about GA” – Poornima, R 30
“Open space, Amphi theatre where we can sit & talk and of course, children here. Feel proud that we are doing
garbage segregation. Like the cosmopolitan atmosphere in Green Acres” – Bennet & Malini
“Green Acres is very calm & the people here are friendly” – Mrs. Pattammal, R 27

Dear fellow GA residents,
This is a moment for celebration for all of us here at Green Acres. History will tell that on 13th
of April 2012, the most auspicious day, folks at Green Acres made a prudent choice to launch a
great instrument of communication, goodwill and neighborhood. Indeed it is an auspicious day as
we celebrate New Year’s Day as per Indian calendar in several states Chithirai, for the Tamils,
Vishu for the Keralites, Baisakhi for the Punjabis, Poila for the Bengalis, Bihu for the Assamese
and Nua Barsha for the Odissa folks.
We at GA truly recognize the wisdom of the Danish proverb ‘No one is rich enough to do without a neighbor’ and
cherish the friendship, camaraderie and togetherness of our loving GA community. Launch of GA Calling is indeed
a demonstration of our care, concern and abiding interest in our fellowship.
In the context of changing social fabric, it is very essential that we roll out similar initiatives to ensure that the
residents have means and ways to be bonded. Man, they say, is a social animal. No human can blossom to her/his
fullness in the absence of the warmth and support of the near and dear. The neighborhood in which most of us
grew up is not the neighborhood that we have settled now. There is a sea of change in everything and the trans-
formation process is ever green. In such a scenario we need to be inventing mechanisms by which we will be in
touch with our humanity.
A community newsletter is a powerful instrument to meet these needs. We need to know who our neighbors are;
we need to be connected, though not necessarily very closely; we need to express who we are; we need to share
our joy and multiply happiness; we need to feel secure in the company of our fellow residents; all these leading to
our being bonded.
GA Calling , will provide an excellent scope to meet all these objectives.
Compared to many other residential communities, GA has a tremendous advantage. In my opinion, GA is of the
right size. Not too large to make it difficult to get connected and yet big enough to accommodate several facili-
ties. What will make this community a vibrant and active community? You don’t require brilliance of the highest
order to answer this question. Everyone knows that participation and involvement in the community activities are
essential pre-requisites to make any venture successful.
GA Calling is your magazine; make it your heart throb. Contribute regularly. Feed news items, send in photo-
graphs, share your success stories…There are innumerable ways in which you can make this news letter to be truly
articulating the spirit of GA. Make it happen.
As I conclude this maiden editorial for this launch Issue, let me place on record my sincere thanks and gratitude
to Ms Sripriya for the leadership, Mr Ramanan for empowering the team, Mr. Vijay Tadepalli, Ms Deepa Suresh,
Ms.Shanmugapriya, Ms Preeta Menon, Ms Yusra for their contribution as volunteers, in making the dream of a
Newsletter a true possibility.
With loving regards

As a Resident of GA: They shifted to GA in 2008 september, when even the construction was not fully com-
pleted. They have actually seen GA growing into a green paradise and did come up with their valuable advise at
every stage to make it a cozy community as we see it today.
They have a positive vibe as they feel the people here are very warm, friendly, helpful and the environment is
superb and therefore makes it more lively& loving!
Suggestions for making GA an excellent society & a Close Knit community:
The club house should be utilised to its full potential.
Library needs be well organised & maintained in a better way.
Getting in Catering facility at our campus on Friday evenings & weekends could provide the residents chance to
enjoy their evening snacks, chats, and dinner within GA itself....(wow ! this we are sure would be welcomed by
all.....how nice to have a good food at reasonable price avoiding those traffic blues, long queues at restaurents and
a bombing bill amount for a humble food!!!!!!!!! )
It was our privilege to meet this lovely couple Mrs. and Mr. Valsan and share their views & valuable suggestions
for our "Know your neighbour" column.

Ociana the Magician
Once upon a time there lived a girl called Ociana. She was a Princess. She had a sister called Aquaria. Ociana and Aquaria
were very beautiful. Their mother’s name was Queen Maria. She was also beautiful like her daughters. They lived happily
until one day Ociana came to know that a girl called Zilia was jealous of her beauty. Ociana became scared that Zilia might do
something to her. So she ran into the forest. When Zilia came to know about this she became furious, so she sent a bad magi-
cian called Badimega. Meanwhile the queen who did not know about Zilia’s order, went for hunting in the forest. Badimega saw
Queen Maria and thought it was Ociana and caught her. Badimega changed Maria into a mermaid. But luckily she had a special
necklace to change her form. Ociana heard this and went to fight with Badimega, but Badimega changed her also as a mer-
maid. When Ociana went inside the ocean she saw her mother. Her mother became happy and gave Ociana the special neck-
lace ..Ociana wore it and went to the castle. She asked her magician if he could turn her and her mother back to a human
form. The magician agreed and he turned Ociana and Queen Maria back to a human. Ociana and Queen Maria lived happily
ever after..

Kings of Ice
Most birds can fly. There are some birds which have wings but cannot fly.
One of these birds is a Penguin.
Penguins live in one of the coldest places in the world – the Antarctic – a
land full of ice and snow. Freezing winds blow there almost all the time,
and the sun comes out only for a small part of the year.
A Penguin’s long body has a shape which helps it to live in the cold. Pen-
guins have thick layers of very light feather called “Down” and thick layers
of skin called “Blubber”. The Down and Blubber keep the body heat in the
cold air out.
They are great swimmers and can swim 10 to 15 km an hour. Both parents
look after the eggs long after it hatches. A day comes when the chicks are
ready to move and swim by themselves in the sea.

Mother’s Day
Is one day enough to celebrate the priceless gift called Mother?? No. But sometimes it takes a token gesture to
remind us to be grateful for the presence of the one person we take so completely for granted.
My mother is someone I owe a lot to. She has been a constant source of support through all the ups and downs of
life. In retrospect I wonder why I was not more appreciative of my mother whose silent and patient faith and be-
lief pushed me to reach for the stars. She introduced me to my lifelong romance with books. She was fairly toler-
ant (!) of my forays into her kitchen, and stoic in stomaching total or semi disasters of dishes that were more of
tongue twisters and less of palate pleasers. She held my hand through my exam fears, taught me life defining les-
sons in humility, gratefulness and trust, was stern when she needed to be and soft when I needed her to be. She
can make me smile, she can make me cry, and she can make me tear out my hair! She is my favourite confidant and
my most preferred sparring partner. I hope I can be to my daughter all that my mother has been to me!
Preeta Menon (A4/ 10)
My child
Well! Any mom would readily accept to pen her motherhood blues, which is a 24/7 job; but I would opt for the
other side. when I boast of my juggle between the duties of a daughter, sister, daughter-in-law, wife, mother,
etc., my daughter, a 9 year old, shoulders various roles so gracefully leaving me quizzed ”can i ever match her
grace?”. Her caring ways with her sibling, though he occupies her space too with us- parents and when I hint on
this, she humbly replies” he’s a baby ma”. She’s a great advisor especially at the tussle times between me and my
husband and I really look out for her, for she always supports only meJ and advises her dad to empathize with me.
On the other hand, it’s my turn to accept her –when I yell at my son’s mischief’s, she’ll politely remind me that
he’s too small to get my words.
Sometimes she’s my teacher, many times – my “critic”; but always... she is my wonder! Right from the day I took
that tiny bundle of joy in my arms, to this day she’s grown up as a replica of my mother who’s always there by my
side in her caring ways. For this mother’s day, I would like to honor my cute little daughter, who’s putting me in
line to be a better mom, day by day with her love & care laced with brimming sunny smile.
Shanmugapriya, M/o.Sree Sivalika, B2/5
MOM, you are the best
I have always pondered on a question that do we really need one day specially to celebrate Mother's day??
For me everyday is a day to celebrate, thank and love my mom for all that she has given and still gives me, be it in
form of her advice, her concern and her unconditional love for me and my kids..
It is said once a mother, always a mother.. how true....My mother has been there for me in all my walks of life..
Though I'm a mother to two beautiful girls, I still look upon my mom as my FPG (friend, philosopher, guide) all the
time.
Your arms were open when I needed a hug,
Your heart understood when I needed a friend,
Your gentle eyes were stern when i needed a lesson,
Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly....
MOM ur the best...

There are people who exist, and then there are people who inspire.
Most of us are on the look-out for a hero – someone to emulate, somebody to look up to. Some of
us are lucky to find one. A few are even luckier to have one in their day to day lives.
This is a celebration of one such inspiring person, Mrs.Thankam Vamadevan, my mother in law.
By her sheer exuberance and positive attitude, she has achieved great strides in life - most strik-
ing of all being the enormous good-will, love and respect others have for her, and the joy she brings into the lives
she touches.
She is the anchor of our happy family, having mastered the art of playing all the roles that have come her way in
life to the hilt – be it as a caring daughter, an affectionate daughter-in-law, a loving sister, a great home-maker, a
fine wife, a talented cook, a valued friend, and a much adored mother & grandmother.
Working for the community, she has been the founder member of the well respected Thursday Ladies Club, a
charitable organization of philanthropic women. She was also one of the early champions of the ExNoRa at Besant
Nagar. She is a keen member of the Bhajan Mandalis she attends.
She takes life in her stride . For her, enjoyment has no age bar, and she gets along famously with all age groups.
She is by definition a senior citizen, but is far younger at heart than a lot of young folks. At Green Acres- from
being the most enthusiastic dancer , whether at the GA Garba or the’Kaikotti kali’, to lending her voice to the GA
Choir - she is also a keen swimmer at the pool.
She is the life of a party, while at the same time, the person who you can turn to for serious and good advice. De-
spite being there for anyone who needs her, she manages her routine with great discipline- her daily exercise
regimen including pranayama, yoga, and working out at the gym- it is no wonder she has the stamina needed to
match her zest for life!
She is a living hero- a source of inspiration to all those who know her.
Thankam Vamadevan is truly a phenomenon - someone very special - and we celebrate her, on Mother’s day, as we
do in our hearts, every day of the year.
With love and pride of being her daughter in law

Stop Dieting, Start Slimming !
Who doesn’t want to be trim and slim? Almost, everyone ! The problem is many of the recommended steps are
either scary or too tough to follow. Dieting is the worst way to spoil the fun. Besides, when carried out fanati-
cally there is a likelihood of getting into other health issues. Added to it is the risk of regaining weight if one
should abandon dieting midway. What is aspired for is an easy way which doesn’t deprive the taste buds the joy
of eating. Eating is the most frequented pleasure for human beings. It is the nature’s way to entice men and
women to take care of their body by having regular food. Over a period of time humans developed extraordinary
liking for the taste of food. During Roman civilization they developed this to such a crazy extent that bizarre
customs emerged. Epicureans, persons given to refined sensuous enjoyment, found food to be one of the socially
recognized and accepted sources of enjoyment. Sometimes it led to gluttony.
Well, the point is well taken. We don’t want to give up the pleasure of eating our favourite food. And yet, we
want to be slim! That’s the challenge. The motto is “Eat anything that you want and still be slim”. This is a tall
call, though not impossible. Good news is that there is a way. It is in the way that you eat that you can choose to
be slim and be slim the way you want. Here are the steps to accomplish your goal, stay in robust health and liber-
ate your body from illness:
The time you eat is sacred time for the body. Give total and complete focus to the food that you eat. This is
the time you will refrain from watching TV, Video and internet. When you are absorbed in watching TV,
the brain is engaged in receiving and storing messages and information. In the bargain, it doesn’t get cell
communication on time indicating that the stomach is full and it is time to stop eating. In the normal
course two things occur: (a) Law of Diminishing Returns start operating. The taste you got from the first
sweet is greater than what you get from the second sweet. Gradually, the pleasure gets thinned out and
sometimes you develop distaste for the same food if taken continuously. Naturally you will stop eating. (b)
When the stomach gets filled to desired level, communication is sent through the nervous system. On re-
ceiving such communication, brain sends signal to stop eating. Now, what happens when we eat while
watching TV?
Operation of the Law of Diminishing Returns gets slowed down. Even when you develop a reduced
pleasure from food, the loss of pleasure is substituted by the joy of watching TV. This allows you
to continue to eat, and eat excessively.
Brain is engaged in sorting out the TV message. The required signal to stop eating is released a bit
late. By this time, the damage is done – excessive eating takes place. You will discover that the
villain is not ‘eating’. It is the TV show. The first step, in pursuit of a slim body, is to focus on
food and stay away from TV while eating.
What applies to TV applies to reading paper, books, stories etc., Same reasons, no need to repeat.
Chew well, masticate food and make it almost liquid. This is the healthiest way to eat. Digestion starts in
your mouth. Saliva makes a brilliant contribution in digesting food. For this, the food has to be in the
mouth for sufficient time. Stomach is not a grinding machine. Your body grinder has 32 tiny solid bones!
Your jaw is a powerful crusher. Allow the teeth and jaw to carry out the job. In the process your food is
sent to the stomach in liquid form. This allows optimal digestion. The nutrients are allowed to be ab-
sorbed and assimilated fully and completely. Food well digested will not lend to obesity. It will be healthy
energy. The added advantage is you will take slightly longer time than normal. This permits the brain to
send signal ‘STOP EATING’ on time.

Page 10 Page 11
Regulate water intake before/during/after a meal. Food requires digestive juice in concentrated form for
total digestion. Any water intake should be minimum half-an-hour before a meal. Same rule after meal –
minimum 30 minutes after food. During meal, total taboo on water. This will allow food to be fully di-
gested. Food that is not digested fully causes several problems, including obesity. Question is, “won’t we
get thirsty during meal?” If you masticate your food properly, saliva in your mouth will take care of mois-
turizing food. What about some water before start of a meal? Take one tablespoon equivalent of water.
Have you observed people eating on banana leaf? They clean the leaf and take a small quantity of water
from their right palm. This is the Vedic way of eating. Just few drops to lubricate throat and the food
canal.
This one is bit difficult and many times impractical. However, when you are in the comfort of home, you can
adopt this excellent practice. Squat down, legs crossed and eat. If unable to sit on floor, sit on a chair
with legs crossed. When you sit on floor and eat, willy-nilly you will bend your stomach every time you go
for one more help. What an excellent way to exercise your belly as you eat!
Continue to derive fullest enjoyment from your food and yet be trim and slim.

Adult Conversation
During one of those discussions at the dinner table my son who was 7 at that time, was explaining what he wants
to be when he grew up. It was a big list of professions. The conversation was going on for a while with the rest
of listening. My daughter, who was 3 then, was patiently listening to her brother talk big words and with hard to
pronounce name. In order to get her involved in the discussion, I asked her what she wants to be when she grew
up. She had a very simple wish; she said “I want to be an Adult Ma”

Share Trading Tips
To protect your capital cut your losses if it exceeds 2%.
Big spectacular wins are not possible in all trades. But small moderate size wins are sustainable and repeatable
with occasional small losing trades.
Buy @ Lows and Sell @ Highs is a foolish game.
Hot share tips are worthless as the person giving tips does not become rich by his tips.
But @ one price that at one point in future you can sell at a higher price.
Buy shares which may bring profits in short term (maximum 3 months). no one knows what will happen after 3
years.
Trading with trend increases probably of a winning trade. If you are wrong sell when price falls by 2%.
Do not get carried by your success. Trade is a risk and manage your risk by suitable stop loss.
Trade correct number of shares to limit your loss. Capital is Rs.10000 and affordable loss is 2%(Rs.200). Buy
shares to loose Rs.200.
If you make money in stock market 50% of risk capital keep 25% away from market in FD and keep 50% for fu-
ture losing trades.
Happy, healthy and wealthy trading., S.Vasudevan; Source JUSTSHARES.COM

Emotional Mastery
Life without emotions is like Indian cuisine without spices. Time and
again we are told by our well wishers to be logical, not to be emotional.
Any attempt to live without emotions is like being extra sensitive on hy-
giene requirements, missing out the flavor of life. A guy was to sit down
for a traditional south Indian meal served on banana leaf, to be taken by
hand. Being highly hygiene conscious he washed his hands and the leaf
with a powerful anti-septic lotion. Can you imagine how he will relish the
food ?
Thoughts and emotions are the nutrition of mind. We can ill afford to
be hyper logical and miss out the fun and joy of being human. Neverthe-
less unbridled emotions of certain kind will lead us to sure disaster.
Emotional mastery acquires its importance from this perspective. We
need to experience and nurture certain emotions in the fullest measure,
while sparingly use certain other emotions as warranted by the context.
Ultimately human beings crave for joy, peace and harmony. All other things fade in relevance and importance when
it comes to measuring success.
Inner joy is a function of emotions and feelings. Emotion - Energy in motion – is dynamic, all the time shaping
every facet of life – relationship, health, performance, ability to communicate effectively etc.
One, who manages emotions, manages life triumphantly. And, one who masters emotions transcends mediocrity of
survival and soars into lofty heights of accomplishment. Mastery of emotions places one in a position of command.
She who masters emotions will, at will, bring forth excellence in her chosen areas of life.
Mastery of emotions engenders power and strength of body and mind, to meet the perpetually emerging chal-
lenges of life. He is the master of situations who masters emotions.
Mastery of emotions is not denial or rejection of the feelings attached to them. Mastery means acknowledging
the reality of emotions and feelings and giving them the due place they deserve. When acknowledged in the appro-
priate manner, emotions serve significantly useful purpose. Mastery helps us to live our lives through awareness.
Time invested in emotional mastery is time more precious than the most valuable metals, minerals and gems. It
gives you the leverage to be super successful in life. Emotional mastery is the key to perpetual inner joy.
