Colony to showcase resident’s art
He’s been drawing since he was a little kid, when he lived on a farm near Luck, Wis. Over the years Roger Gronlund had built a life, and had jobs where “everything was behind a drawing board.”
His art will be on display for the public to view today and tomorrow (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at The Colony, 431 Prairie Center Drive, where Gronlund is a resident.
The landscapes and fi gures on display are what remain of his artwork. Some show the places he’s visited. The area around Lake Superior near Bayfi eld, Wis., he described as his favorite place to draw.
Though watercolor painting and furniture restoration have been his lifelong hobbies, Gronlund’s career also involved design. After a stint in the Army, he attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, in the late ’40s.
His main job was with Honeywell, for 26 years, he said.
There he did concept illustration. He explained that engineers and scientists would fi gure something they wanted and he would sketch it out for presentation.
“We did everything there,” he said, including portraits and brochures.
It was a job, he said, where “you didn’t know what you were going to do next.”

Environmental Fair Jan. 20
To go along with the upcom-ing Science Fair, the Eden Prairie Conservation Commission will present the 2007 Environmental Fair. The free event, to be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Eden Prairie High School, will include
topics like energy conservation, storm water management, wind power and rain gardens. For more information, call Leslie Stovring, the city’s environmental coordi-nator at 952-949-8327.
ESL classes start Jan. 20
Starting Jan. 20, Adult Op-tions in Education will be offer-ing ESL classes 9 a.m. to noon Saturday mornings.
“With classes at three levels of English profi ciency and space for up to 45 learners, this Saturday offering is a response to a need expressed by many learners who are unable to attend classes dur-ing the week due to work schedule or transportation and childcare needs,” states a news release.
The program will continue to

Understandboy, girl brains
Dr. David Walsh is coming back to Eden Prairie, this time to discuss boy and girl brains. The event, “Boy Brains and Girl Brains: What Does Science Tell Us?” is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Pax Christi Church, 12100 Pioneer Trail. According to a news release, Walsh, president and founder of the National In-stitute on Media and the Family,
will not only separate the fact and myths when it comes to brain dif-ferences, “but he also translates the latest research into strategies that parents can use to enhance the development of their chil-dren.” The event is free.
