PAULINAMADITABAMPHUTHI(67) has been living in a two-roomshack for many years without get-ting an RDP house, but she said shenever lost hope.Mphuthi, who hails from Putha-

ditjhaba near the Setsing ShoppingCentre, now finallyhas a goodhouse. The Maluti-a-Phofung Municipali-

ty has built her a house with fiverooms. It was officially handed over to her

on Mandela Day by Ace Magashule, the Free State premier, and SarahMoleleki, the Maluti-a-Phofung(MAP) executive mayor. She said good things came to those

who were patient and she believedthat her patience had earned her ahouse. In addition to the house, furniture

was also provided. Express EasternFree State has also learnt that benefi-ciarieswho receivehouseswould getsix months medical care, threemonths’ worth of groceries and thechildren from those families wouldbe assisted to further their studies atthe FET College.“I am very happy. I have accepted

the house. I want to thank NtateMandela, who is in hospital, becausethe house was officially given to meon his day,” she said. This grandmother, who is origi-

nally from Bohlokong near Bethle-hem, lives with her 13-year-oldgrandson, Tisetso, whose parentspassed away a few years ago.“I have lived in a shack since that

time when there was a war in Lesot-ho. The Bible says there is a righttime for everything andmy time hascome,” she said.Moleleki said she would like to

thank all business people who hadmade it possible to build the house. She said it was evident that many ofthe local business ownerswould loveto help the government.“We visited the families last year

and we found that the living condi-tions were not good, because somewere sharing one room with theirgrandsons. The premier promised

Mphuthi, when hewas here last yearin May, that the government wouldbuild a house for her and nowwe areopening it,” she said. The mayor said their aim was to

make sure that all the elders in themunicipality lived a good life withdignity, because they had fought forthem.“As themunicipality, we will keep

on looking for other elders who needhouses so that they can enjoy thegood life and the fruits of freedom.“We are not building houses, but

we will make sure that we helpwhere we can,” she said. She said they had built three hous-

es, but the contractors only finishedthe one whichwas unveiled and add-ed that she hoped that the other two

would be unveiled in three weeks orso.Ace Magashule, the premier of the

Free State, said that theywere happythat they had built a house for thegrandmother. He pointed out, how-ever, that the issue of building hous-es for people was not going the wayhe wanted – it had to be accelerated.“We had a meeting in our execu-

tive council where we decided thatwe would have to accelerate thesolution of the building issue inQwaqwa.“We want to build houses that will

represent the culture of the Sesothopeople.“We will start building in Septem-

ber and that will also be part of theMandela Day celebration.”

the handover of ten new buses atthe Charles Mopeli Stadium inQwaqwa on Wednesday, said theywere very happy with what theFree State government has donefor them. The new buses where handed

over by Butana Komphela, theMEC for Police, Roads and Trans-port, and Ace Magashule, the pre-mier of the Free State. The ten buses increased the

number of new buses to 12 afterthe other twowere given to the bus

company last year October.Ntshingila said she wanted to

thank the MEC, because he wasthe one who had opened the doorfor them. She said the commutersalso deserved something better fortheir patience.“Our commuters kept using our

buses, even though at times theywere dying on the road, andwe areaware that some of them werefired because of their late arrivalat work. We are sorry about that,”she said.Ntshingila said they were ex-

pecting to have 36 new buses bythe end of August.“Who would have thought that

black people would be in controlof the bus company? I feel over-whelmed with what our govern-ment has done for us,” she said.

Ntshingila has urged the com-munity to look after the buses, be-cause they were the ones whowould be using them.Komphela said they started ne-

gotiations for the possibility ofchanging the transport industryin 2002. He also said it was agood feeling that what they havelong fought for was finally work-ing.“We came here to give you ten

buses. We believe that you willtake care of them and use themwisely. You should start lookingafter them today, so that they willlast you longer,” he said.Komphela said theywouldmake

sure that the buses were driven bySouth Africans with proper pa-pers.“We have seen many taxi own-

ers employing people from Lesot-ho and we do not want that to hap-pen with our buses,” he said.He concluded by requesting the

community to support the govern-ment and added that, if they did, good things would come.“With me in the leadership eve-

rything is possible.“I am a leader who does not easi-

ly go down. I want to make surethat many things are happeningunder my leadership,” Magashulesaid. He saluted Komphela by saying,

“You have done it, my chief. Youknow, he is one of those peoplewho does not want to be congratu-lated alone for the good work, ashe always says the governmentdoes it, but he deserves to be toldthat he has done well.”

BLADE NZIMANDE, the ministerfor Higher Education and Training, told the gr. 12 learners from all theprovinces who had gathered at theLere La Tshepe College that it wouldnot be the end of theworld if they didnot go to university. He said most of the skills that

South Africa needed at the midlevelwere only found at the FET Collegesand not at university. The minister spoke at the Nelson

MandelaCareerExhibitionCounsel-lingwhichwas held onMandela Dayin Qwaqwa.“This is an annual event where we

visit the colleges in the rural areas.I would also like to tell those whowould like to go to college and uni-versity to start applying now,” hesaid. He said as the department they

have devotedNelsonMandelaDay tocareer guidance, because their ownresearch showed thatmany studentsbattled in colleges and university be-cause they did not know what sub-ject combinations to take in order tofollow the professions of theirchoice.“Wehave a huge shortage ofmotor

mechanics, welders, electriciansandmany other skilled-level occupa-tions that can only be obtained at theFET Colleges,” he said.He said that was why the govern-

ment had increased its allocation ofmoney to FETColleges fromR3,8 bil-lion in 2010 to R 5,4 billion in the cur-rent financial year.“In the Free State alone we have

allocated R257 million in 2012 andnow the amount is R365 million,” hesaid.Nzimande said theywanted to con-

tinue to strengthen their FETs andthat they were aware that their im-age was negative. He said as govern-ment theyhada turnaround strategyfor FETs. “We are going to have dedi-cated training for the lecturers. Weare also going to expose them to in-dustry and the work place so thatthey teach things which are happen-ing at the moment. We want our mo-tor mechanics to fix cars which areon the road now, not cars whichwere on the road two decades ago,”he said. The minister said one of their pri-

orities was to ensure that the largenumber of youth in the countryweregiven post-school education andtraining opportunities in order toimprove their employability andchances of having a sustainablemeans of livelihood.“One of the things we are proud of

is that since the establishment of theNational Student Financial AidScheme, we have now reached morethan 1,4 million students. Many ofwhomwould not have seen any post-school education if they were not as-sisted by this. We are also proud be-cause our students’ bursary fundingat the FETs has increased fromR318 million in 2010 to R1,9 billion in2013,” he said.
