Significance of the Problem

• Food crisis and poverty are global concerns

• World Bank report (2008): food prices increased

by 83% over 3 years

• WFP: 100 million people short of food

• Over 50% in Africa

• Other factors

• Climate change: increased drought

• Low soil fertility

• Poor access to improved germplasm

• Post-harvest losses

• Poor access to market

Why cassava?

Cassava is widely grown in

sub-sahara Africa

Suitable for food, feed and

industrial uses

Rich protein in leaves

Why cassava?

• Thrive in unstable environments

• Drought tolerant

• Grows both on rich and poor soils

• Long storage in ground

• IITA and NARS partners developed

improved varieties (>500) and agronomic

practices in Africa

• On-farm yield/ha increased by 50%

• New production skills accessed and used by at least 1m farmers

• Sustainable soil fertility management practices popularised

• Best-fit, multi-purpose processing equipment for gari, chips, flour

etc. identified and promoted

• 500 pilot processing centres established
