1 Focusing events are large enough to qualify for a Presidential Disaster Declaration and important enough to contribute to a notable outcome, such as a change in law, regulations, or organizational arrangements.2 Although this catastrophic earthquake occurred in Alaska, it led to significant studies by California scientists and influenced both California and national earthquake mitigation measures. The transfer of knowledge was faciltated by Prof. Karl Steinbrugge among others.
