2016-2017 Newell Elementary School Improvement Plan ReportNewell Elementary Profile
Newell has a rich history dating back to 1920, as the Mecklenburg County Tax Records Database indicates it was an original Rosenwald School. This unique one classroom building still stands and serves as a reminder of the progress made towards the realization of an equitable education for all children. The “new” Newell, as it is often referred to, now occupies a brand new, state of the art, 39 classroom structure with a recent addition of6 mobile classrooms.
Newell is a thriving school with close to 900 students that represent nearly 20 different countries and a total of 15 different languages; Burmese, French, Chinese, Rade, Twi, and Arabic, just to name a few. Our school is reflective of the diverse community we serve, and our diversity itself provides a significant opportunity for students to receive an education that will prepare them for the world beyond our walls.
We are proud to have been in the first cohort design team of 15 CMS schools dedicated to providing a Personalized Learning (PL) Environment for every child. We aim to develop the whole child and empower them to take ownership of their learning by providing them with multiple pathways to demonstrate mastery learning and have designed our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) and master schedule to reflect that belief.
This year we have implemented a one facilitator per grade level model in grades 3-5, with the addition of a PL facilitator that serves grades K-5. Included on the ILT also, are a literacy and math facilitator supporting grades K-2. The administrative team consists of a principal, assistant principal and dean of students. Each member of the administrative team is dedicated to a specific grade level that supports our academic and behavior goals. This model will support individualized teacher coaching, ultimately impacting student learning.
In terms of classrooms we have 7 kindergarten, 7 first grade, 8 second grade, 7 third grade, 6 fourth grade, and 6 5ifth grade. We are a Title 1 school where 50% of our population is Latino/Hispanic, 40% African American, 3 % Asian, 3 % Caucasian, 2 % Multi-Racial and .8% American- Indian. 26% of our students are considered Limited English Proficient (LEP). To support our diverse learners we have 4 English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, 3 Exceptional Children (EC) teachers, 2 counselors, a behavior modification technician (BMT), a half-time psychologist and half-time speech pathologist. 10 instructional assistants support our classrooms across grade levels and are primarily scheduled in classrooms during literacy workshop. Our special area classes include media, art, physical education, computer lab, music, science lab and an addition this year of theater.
During the 2016-2017 school year, our focus will include the Instructional Planning Approach (IPA) where teachers meet regularly to share expertise, work collaboratively to improve teaching skills and plan instruction for the appropriate levels of intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students. In all planning sessions we are working to ensure a data driven environment that is precise and systematic to improvingstudent learning. Our planning cycle will include assessment, analysis, and action that will drive the rationale for targeted small-group instruction.
9
2016-2017 Newell Elementary School Improvement Plan ReportAs literacy continues to be our North Star, we will provide a focus during the literacy block on guided reading; close reading and academic conversations across content areas. With a focus on closing achievement gaps, we depend on small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency as they work to achieve grade level proficiency. This will allow students to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, therefore accelerating their progress. To ensure college and career readiness we will continue to have a focus on close reading. It is our goal to expose children to complex text through thoughtful, critical analysis providing precise understanding of form, craft, and meaning. As this is a key requirement of the Common Core State Standards, we believe this will aid our efforts in positively impacting student achievement.
Through substantial summer planning, training, and professional development (PD), we have worked to identify the components of our math program that were absent in the past year and identified ways to improve on their implementation. This year we will focus on supplementing Math Investigations by paying careful attention to standard alignment. Again, we will focus on the IPA model and the use of ongoing assessment tools such as MAP, exit tickets and interim assessments to determine next steps in instructional planning. This will allow students to work at their individualized levels or be grouped by skills to address above or below grade level learning.
As part of our implementation of PL we will continue a focus on social emotional learning. We believe that character development plays equally to academic development and is the true goal of education. To that end, we have developed and adopted our own set of Social Emotional Learning standards through a research-based approach from various other states who have implemented their own standards, curriculum, and initiatives. We also have implemented morning meetings through a school wide approach with dedicated time on our master schedule.
Parental involvement is paramount to student success and we strive to maintain clear communication with our community. Regular newsletters, Connect Ed messages, conferences and events support our efforts to be an inclusive environment. To communicate with our Spanish-speaking families we have a fulltime interpreter. This position ensures that all our communication is provided in English and Spanish. Parents are encouraged to become a part of our Parent Teacher Organization and School Leadership Team. Recently we continued our contract with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and will offer ESL classes to parents interested, free of charge.
Community partners support a myriad of needs for our school. Recently we have partnered with Together We Feed and will receive close to$90,000 in support for our school. A range of benefits exists such as a mobile food pantry sponsored by Second Food Harvest, weekend food back pack program, career excursions and child sponsorship, just to name a few. Local churches such as Newell Presbyterian and University Hills are present with volunteer support and help us expand our reach into the community.
Our goal at Newell over the course of the school year is to provide students with and exceptional learning experience. It is important that we continue to foster an environment of high expectations and support to reach those same expectations. We operate to close academic achievement
10
2016-2017 Newell Elementary School Improvement Plan Reportgaps and commit to continuing the work that began for us early in the 1920s by making good on the promise that all children deserve access to an education that will prepare them to lead productive lives.
