SUMMARY I am an assistant professor within the department of veterinary physiology and pharmacology at Texas A&M University. Here, I serve as the instructor of record for two courses studying human embryology and the physiological events of pregnancy. My research program focuses on understanding the biochemical mechanisms by which chromatin structure is altered during development and how these changes serve to regulate gene expression. I began my scientific career examining the role of failed epigenetic programming during the development of cloned embryos. I have since pioneered studies examining epigenetic mechanisms regulating imprinted gene expression and developmental programming within mammalian embryonic, extraembryonic and neural precursor stem cells. I am interested in understanding the mechanisms that recruit epigenetic modifiers to specific cohorts of genes, identifying the biochemical machinery directing this process, and understanding how these events are impacted by environmental toxins and teratogens. For the past four years, my laboratory has focused on epigenetic defects arising as a consequence of prenatal alcohol exposure. In 2011, I published a novel vector architecture that enhanced transgene stability and expression within embryonic and extra-embryonic stem cells. Systems Biosciences, a biotechnology company based in California, approached me during the summer of 2012 looking to develop this novel architecture into a commercial reagent. Working through Blake Petty at the Texas A&M University System, we negotiated the commercialization of this product as well as its implementation in other viral expression systems. This is a course I developed during the 2011 academic year, the purpose of which is to provide undergraduate students with an introduction to the physiological processes essential to gametogenesis, early embryonic development and pregnancy. This course will provide a framework upon which to build a basic understanding of the physiology of pregnancy and several developmental disorders that arise due to biomedical miss-regulation or environmental agents. Students are expected to synthesize structural functional relationships between the gametes and reproductive organs and describe the interaction between the developing fetus, placental membranes, maternal tissues and the environment. This course will cover essential elements underpinning the molecular basis of development and disease, which will be expanded upon in both medical and veterinary professional programs as well as relevant graduate courses.

This is a course I developed during the 2014 academic year, which is intended to provide incoming freshman Biomedical Sciences students an appreciation of how separate areas of medicine, biology, ecology and economics overlap with each other. This course follows a survey model and seeks to expand the student’s breadth of knowledge regarding the connections between epidemiology, biotechnology, virology, environmental toxicology, climate science, animal ethics and genetics. Grading for this class is derived from weekly quizzes administered through ecampus.

The purpose of this course is to provide graduate level students with a journal club style seminar class focusing on the most current research in Epigenetics as it relates to developmental biology and disease. Students will be assigned two weekly papers taken from the most current primary literature. Each student will be expected to synthesize the data and research strategies outlined in each paper. For each manuscript discussed, one student will be expected to give an oral presentation detailing the research findings while another student will be assigned to lead the discussion of the paper. Each week, two papers will be discussed and marks will be assigned based on the quality of the oral presentations and active group participation. Marks for this class will be assigned as either pass or fail.

VTPP 650 is an elective, journal club style class designed to examine multiple aspects of vascular physiology including: the structure and function of blood vessels, vascular beds, the molecular and cell biology of endothelium and vascular smooth muscle, microcirculation, regulation of blood flow by local, neural and humoral signals. In this course, I teach two lectures focusing on vascular aspects of placentation and maternal-fetal blood flow.

Co-Directors Dr. Michael Golding – BIMS program Dr. Mandy Rispoli – Special Education Program Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and local community needs. Students enrolled in VTPP 452/652 - Fetal and Embryo Physiology, are given the opportunity to volunteer within the local autism clinic and collaborate with Special Education majors from SEFB 414. Together, groups of students work under the direction of Dr. Amy Heath to fulfill a need of the autism clinic (client interactions, producing learning materials ect). This project seeks to build a cross-disciplinary experience for students enrolled within the Biomedical Sciences and Educational Psychology programs at Texas A&M University. This service-learning opportunity will prompt students to step outside their area of comfort and allow them to develop both novel perspectives as well as critical thinking skills that would otherwise not be available in either program individually.

This undergraduate focused program seeks to implement novel strategies to create leadership and research opportunities for students with little or no laboratory experience. This online course is designed for veterinarians interested in learning more about genetics, stem cell biology and epigenetics as applied to everyday veterinary practice. The scope of the course is to introduce the basic underlying principles of these rapidly evolving disciplines to practicing veterinarians so that they become more familiar with their potential clinical application. I team teach this short course once a year in conjunction with faculty from University of Guelph in Canada as well as Tufts University, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest University here in the United States. This course is RACE approved for veterinarians and counts as 8 continuing education credits as mandated by state licensing boards.
