Biome description• Definition - Deserts are areas that have widely
scattered vegetation and receive very little rain.• Temperature changes rapidly during a 24 hour
period – Very hot during the day and very cold at night
• Deserts are often located near mountain ranges. – Mountains block the passage of rain
Plants in the desert
• All plants have adaptations for conserving water. These plants are called succulents – They have thick fleshy stems and modified leaves
to store water– They also have a waxy coating that prevents water
loss– Many roots spread out just under the surface of
the soil why? Speak with group….• To capture as much moisture as possible
Animals in the desert
• Animals need adaptations as well to survive in this harsh habitat some of these include…..– Thick scaly skin……reptiles– Some sleep through the whole dry season like the

– The elf owl burry in cactus… to keep cool– Most animals are nocturnal which means they stay
active at night or at dusk when it is cooler
