Prime Minister NarendraModi's description of Dadrilynching and opposition toGhulam Ali's concert inMumbai as "unfortunate" todayled ally Shiv Sena to rake up hispast when he was ChiefMinister during the 2002Gujarat riots and Congress toallege he suffered from "selec-tive amnesia."

As the unease betweenMaharashtra's ruling allies BJPand Shiv Sena grew, Sena MPSanjay Raut made a controver-sial reference to the post-Godhra riots, saying Modi "isknown and respected due toGodhra and Ahmedabad."

"If the Prime Minister hasmade such a statement (onGhulam Ali), it is unfortunate,"Raut said.

"The world knows NarendraModi due to Godhra andAhmedabad and we respect himfor the same reason. If the sameNarendra Modi has called thecontroversy surroundingGhulam Ali and (formerPakistan minister) KhurshidKasuri unfortunate, then it isindeed unfortunate for all of us,"

he told reporters in Mumbai.Raut, however, seconded

Modi's views on Dadri lynchingand said the incident was "high-ly unfortunate and it should nothave happened."

Breaking his silence, Moditoday described the Dadri inci-dent and opposition to the con-cert by Pakistan singer GhulamAli from Shiv Sena as "undesir-able and unfortunate" and thathis government had nothing todo with them but accused theopposition of indulging in"pseudo secularism" and poli-tics of polarisation.

Ghulam Ali's concert inMumbai was last week calledoff following threats from theSena, despite a snub to it byMaharashtra Chief MinisterDevendra Fadnavis who saidadequate protection would beprovided to Ali and that the con-cert would be held according toschedule.

Accusing Modi of sufferingfrom selective amnesia and nottaking appropriate action in thewake of the Dadri lynching,Congress said that it is not pos-turing that is needed but con-crete action.

"Narendra Modi is sufferingfrom selective amnesia. He has

forgotten that he is the PrimeMinister of entire country andsafety and protecting the life of125 crore citizens of India is hisresponsibility," Congress chiefspokesperson RandeepSurjewala said in Delhi.

Surjewala said Modi selec-tively forgets that BJP govern-ment is in power in Maharashtrawhere Ali's concert was can-celled or Sudheendra Kulkarni'sface was smeared with ink.

JD(U) president SharadYadav also criticised the PrimeMinister saying that while he isquick to speak on the victoriesof the cricket team, he wasspeaking on the Dadri incidentafter much delay. He describedthe Dadri lynching as a"Talibani act."

"He Modi) speaks in somany countries...If cricket teamwins he immediately speaks andon other things also he immedi-ately speaks up. This is a matterof country's unity, then how canthe Prime Minister speak overthis after delay?" Yadav said.

Union Minsiter Ravi ShankarPrasad today questioned eminentwriters for returning awards toprotest against Kannada authorKalburgi’s murder and Dadrilynching, telling them that suchvoices were “not heard” afterincidents like Emergency andMuzaffarnagar riots.

“...One thing does pain mesometimes. A number of big inci-dents happened in the countryearlier, also but at that time peo-ple did not return (awards).

“During Emergency, demo-cratic rights including press free-dom were violated on such alarge scale. But these kinds ofvoices were not heard then. Sucha massive riot happened inMuzaffarangar one and half yearsback and the way the (State)Government (of SamajwadiParty) worked there was in anenitrely discriminatory manner.At that time also such protest wasnot seen,” Prasad told reporters atthe Cabinet briefing.

He however asserted that “wehonour the scholars but will liketo tell them very politely that ifthey get award, they have got iton the basis of their ability andknowledge on which everyonetakes pride.”

The Union Minister, how-ever, refused to take furtherquesions syaing he does notintend to enter into a debate onthe issue at this podium.

“I would not like to sayanything on it. Cutlure Minister(Mahesh Sharma) has alreadyspoken on it,” he said.

Asked about the Oppositioncriticism of the Government onDadri incident, Prasad sid thatboth the Prime Minister andBJP chief Amit Shah have spo-ken over the issue.

“Even after that some peo-ple do not desist from criticism.What can we do? The primaryresponsibility for Dadri inci-dent was on Uttar Pradesh gov-ernment. Their initial responsewas also not good.

“They should have takenaction. We condemn it. Action

should be taken against thoseinvolved in it,” he said.

Prasad’s remarks comesafter eminent author ShashiDeshpande said that PrimeMinister Narendra Modi’scomment on the Dadri lynchingincident was “far too weak.”

The eminent author, whohad resigned from the generalcouncil of the Sahitya Akademiexpressing “disappointment”over PM’s silence on Kannadaauthor Kalburgi’s murder, saidthat Modi has used a very weakword, “unfortunate”, to termthe lynching incident.

At least 27 writers, poets,playwrights and translatorshave so far returned their

Sahitya Akademi award withPunjabi writer Dalip KaurTiwana handing over herPadma Shri award against the“rising intolerance” in thecountry.

Prasad did not take anyquestions on Shiv Sena’s paintattack on Sudheendra Kulkarni.

Responding to questions onthe Prime Minister hosting thefamily members of SubhasChandra Bose at his residencetoday, the Union Minister saidthat members of Netaji’s fami-ly had expressed concern overthe facts related to the death ofthe leader and hence the PM ismeeting them. (PTI)

A special court today fixedDecember 10 for hearing argu-ments on framing of charges in acoal block allocation scam casein which ex-Minister of State forCoal Santosh Bagrodia, RajyaSabha MP Vijay Darda and oth-ers are accused.

Special CBI Judge BharatParashar posted the matter forarguments after the advocatesappearing for the accused saidthat scrutiny of documents sup-plied to them by the agencyalong with the charge sheet wascomplete.

"Counsel (for accused) saidthat compliance of section 207of CrPC stands complete. Put upfor consideration on charge onDecember 10 and December11," the court said.

The case pertains to allegedirregularities in allocation ofBander coal block inMaharashtra to accused firmAMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd.

The court had earlier grantedbail to Bagrodia, Vijay Darda,his son Devendra Darda, ex-Coal Secretary H C Gupta,retired public servant L S Janoti

and Director of AMR Iron andSteel Pvt Ltd, Manoj KumarJayaswal, in the case.

The court had summonedthem after taking cognisance ofthe alleged offences punishableunder sections 120-B (criminalconspiracy) read with 420(cheating), 409 (criminal breachof trust by public servant) under

IPC and Prevention ofCorruption Act.

In its January 30 order, thecourt had observed thatBagrodia, Gupta and Janoti hadallegedly committed criminalmisconduct and facilitated AMRIron and Steel Pvt Ltd in unlaw-fully obtaining the coalblock.(PTI)

The 66-year-old actor said he was left "dejected" with the waythe incident was reported as the "pertinent points" raised by otherintellectuals who were present at the event was ignored but what hesaid was picked on and "misstatements" were made.
