DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2015 (PAGE 15) MUMBAI/NEW DELHI, Oct 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's description of Dadri lynching and opposition to Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai as "unfortunate" today led ally Shiv Sena to rake up his past when he was Chief Minister during the 2002 Gujarat riots and Congress to allege he suffered from "selec- tive amnesia." As the unease between Maharashtra's ruling allies BJP and Shiv Sena grew, Sena MP Sanjay Raut made a controver- sial reference to the post- Godhra riots, saying Modi "is known and respected due to Godhra and Ahmedabad." "If the Prime Minister has made such a statement (on Ghulam Ali), it is unfortunate," Raut said. "The world knows Narendra Modi due to Godhra and Ahmedabad and we respect him for the same reason. If the same Narendra Modi has called the controversy surrounding Ghulam Ali and (former Pakistan minister) Khurshid Kasuri unfortunate, then it is indeed unfortunate for all of us," he told reporters in Mumbai. Raut, however, seconded Modi's views on Dadri lynching and said the incident was "high- ly unfortunate and it should not have happened." Breaking his silence, Modi today described the Dadri inci- dent and opposition to the con- cert by Pakistan singer Ghulam Ali from Shiv Sena as "undesir- able and unfortunate" and that his government had nothing to do with them but accused the opposition of indulging in "pseudo secularism" and poli- tics of polarisation. Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai was last week called off following threats from the Sena, despite a snub to it by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who said adequate protection would be provided to Ali and that the con- cert would be held according to schedule. Accusing Modi of suffering from selective amnesia and not taking appropriate action in the wake of the Dadri lynching, Congress said that it is not pos- turing that is needed but con- crete action. "Narendra Modi is suffering from selective amnesia. He has forgotten that he is the Prime Minister of entire country and safety and protecting the life of 125 crore citizens of India is his responsibility," Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in Delhi. Surjewala said Modi selec- tively forgets that BJP govern- ment is in power in Maharashtra where Ali's concert was can- celled or Sudheendra Kulkarni's face was smeared with ink. JD(U) president Sharad Yadav also criticised the Prime Minister saying that while he is quick to speak on the victories of the cricket team, he was speaking on the Dadri incident after much delay. He described the Dadri lynching as a "Talibani act." "He Modi) speaks in so many countries...If cricket team wins he immediately speaks and on other things also he immedi- ately speaks up. This is a matter of country's unity, then how can the Prime Minister speak over this after delay?" Yadav said. CPI MP D Raja slammed Modi's remarks on the Dadri incident as "too little and too late", saying it amounted to dereliction of duty. (PTI) After PM remarks, Sena rakes up Modi's past as CM during Guj riots NEW DELHI, Oct 14: Union Minsiter Ravi Shankar Prasad today questioned eminent writers for returning awards to protest against Kannada author Kalburgi’s murder and Dadri lynching, telling them that such voices were “not heard” after incidents like Emergency and Muzaffarnagar riots. “...One thing does pain me sometimes. A number of big inci- dents happened in the country earlier, also but at that time peo- ple did not return (awards). “During Emergency, demo- cratic rights including press free- dom were violated on such a large scale. But these kinds of voices were not heard then. Such a massive riot happened in Muzaffarangar one and half years back and the way the (State) Government (of Samajwadi Party) worked there was in an enitrely discriminatory manner. At that time also such protest was not seen,” Prasad told reporters at the Cabinet briefing. He however asserted that “we honour the scholars but will like to tell them very politely that if they get award, they have got it on the basis of their ability and knowledge on which everyone takes pride.” The Union Minister, how- ever, refused to take further quesions syaing he does not intend to enter into a debate on the issue at this podium. “I would not like to say anything on it. Cutlure Minister (Mahesh Sharma) has already spoken on it,” he said. Asked about the Opposition criticism of the Government on Dadri incident, Prasad sid that both the Prime Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah have spo- ken over the issue. “Even after that some peo- ple do not desist from criticism. What can we do? The primary responsibility for Dadri inci- dent was on Uttar Pradesh gov- ernment. Their initial response was also not good. “They should have taken action. We condemn it. Action should be taken against those involved in it,” he said. Prasad’s remarks comes after eminent author Shashi Deshpande said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment on the Dadri lynching incident was “far too weak.” The eminent author, who had resigned from the general council of the Sahitya Akademi expressing “disappointment” over PM’s silence on Kannada author Kalburgi’s murder, said that Modi has used a very weak word, “unfortunate”, to term the lynching incident. At least 27 writers, poets, playwrights and translators have so far returned their Sahitya Akademi award with Punjabi writer Dalip Kaur Tiwana handing over her Padma Shri award against the “rising intolerance” in the country. Prasad did not take any questions on Shiv Sena’s paint attack on Sudheendra Kulkarni. Responding to questions on the Prime Minister hosting the family members of Subhas Chandra Bose at his residence today, the Union Minister said that members of Netaji’s fami- ly had expressed concern over the facts related to the death of the leader and hence the PM is meeting them.
