MUMBAI, July 1:

Amid intense speculationover the successor of RBIGovernor Raghuram Rajan,Singaporean brokerage DBStoday said markets perceive thecentral bank as a credible andindependent body, and wouldlike to see the new head to con-tinue with focus on inflationover growth.

"Domestic markets have puttheir faith behind the Indian cen-tral bank as a credible and inde-pendent institution, pinninghopes that Governor Rajan’ssuccessor will also prioritise

inflation over other economicobjectives," it said.

It called Rajan's decision notto seek an extension as a "nega-tive surprise" whose impact was"overshadowed by larger globaluncertainties" like the Brexit.

DBS said revamp of the mon-etary policy framework, stabilis-ing the rupee, reining in inflation,a forward-looking approachtowards financial sector reformsand systematic approach in deal-ing with banks’ stressed assetswere the key positives fromRajan's three-year term.

There has been intense spec-ulation after Rajan's announce-

ment last month over who willsucceed him as the head of RBI.The names include his deputyUrijit Patel, economists likeRakesh Mohan and SubirGokarn (who have also servedRBI), as well as State Bank ofIndia's chairman ArundhatiBhattacharya.

On June 18, buffeted bypolitical attacks, including byBJP MP Subramanian Swamy, coupled with unending specula-tion over his continuance, Rajanhad said no to a second term -- asurprise decision the industryand opposition parties termed asa loss. (PTI)
