CONTRACTORS started night work onthe P445 from Friday last week to ac-celerate work and meet their 12 De-cember 2014 deadline.
The “accelerated works pro-gramme” comes after a meeting tosolve the traffic issue was held lastMonday between ratepayers’ associa-tions, representatives from consultingengineers SMEC,KwaDukuzaMunici-plality (KDM) councillors and trafficdepartment and business owners.
SMEC’sDavidDukesaid thework isnot an official night shift, but staff areworking late.

WEEKLY A trucking nightmarefor KZN’s roadsJONATHAN ERASMUS
DURBAN’s logistics industry, ac-countingforhalfofthecity’sem-ployment, is expected tomush-
room.Within the next 25 years trucks ac-
cessing the port could grow from10 300 per day to over 21 000 — andwith the port already experiencing“regular congestion” on major arteri-als,thecityiscurrentlydevisingastrat-egy to keep the trucks moving.
An early draft seen byWeekly’s sis-ter publication The Witness revealedthecitywantstooffera“package”ofso-lutions including weighbridges, truckstops, staging areas and “weigh-in-motion” stations erected along allma-jor trucking routes.
The report said about 60% ofeThekwini’seconomywas“heavilyre-liant on freight transportation” andthat freightandtruckingaccountedfor415 000 jobs — an estimated 50% ofthe city’s employed workforce.
eThekwini’s transport economistPaul Sessions said, while the strategic
plan was still being developed, therewasaneedtolookbeyondjust theneedto “build roads”.
“Wehavedoneafull freight forecaston what could happen in the industry
if nothing is done.“Wealsohave lookedathowwelev-
erage both the sea and airports. Mostplans are on infrastructure, butwe re-alise it is not good enough to simplybuild roads. We want to provide awhole range of services, for example, managing freight coming in on thehighway.Wewant toprovidereal-timedataso, forexample, if there isablock-age at Bayhead, we need to be able toinform trucks outside the city andpro-vide lay-by facilities for them,” saidSessions.
Sessions said demand on the port, roadandrailwayserviceswas“greaterthan existing capabilities” leading toship delays, congestion and “exces-sive” freight transportation costs.
“In2012,ittookonetrucka48-hourturnaround time fromentering toexit-ing the port. Unroadworthy and over-loaded heavy vehicles pose a seriousthreat to road safety as do inexperi-enced, fatigued and unlicensed driv-ers, aswell as limitedoversight of haz-ardous chemicals.”
The bulk of all transport and logis-ticsoperatewithina20kilometreradi-us of the port with companies prefer-ring theN3toHowick,companieswithprovincial distribution footprints onthe N2 and outsourced logistic opera-torsremainingclosetotheportsuchasthe South Durban basin area.
By 2035 the city could have, truckstops, staging areas and up to 10 mo-bile weighbridges operating along theN3/N2/R603 and MR579, but the cityrequires Transnet to upgrade its railservice too.

ALLOW me first of all to congratulate yourdepartment as well as the National PoliceCommissioner Riah Phiyega on the swiftaction by the members of the SAPS in thearrest of three suspects so soon after theunfortunate shooting incident.
This involving the African NationalCongress Member of Parliament JacksonNthembu on Sunday, 19 October.
The arrests in question, effected within48 hours of this heinous act in Limpoponone the less, clearly demonstrates theability of the SAPS to act swiftly in casesof violent crime.
This however, brings me to the reasonfor writing this letter.
While the swift action in the case ofNthembu’s incident remains something tocelebrate and congratulate the SAPS on,
this swift action also highlights the commonly held belief that justice exists onlyfor the wealthy and well connected inSouth Africa.
Surely the fact that these three suspects were apprehended in Limpopo, hundreds of kilometres away from the initialscene of the crime in Witbank, would be anindication that the SAPS does in fact havethe capacity and the will to solve crimesswiftly?
Why then does swift action such as thisonly appear to happen when the victim ofthe crime is someone famous, wealthy orwellconnected with the government?
I am sure the public would agree withme when I ask why swift action such as thisappears nonexistent when a normal citizen falls victim to violent crimes such as
this? When taking a look at the recently re
leased crime statistics, which remains asyet unaudited and therefore should be taken with a truck load of salt, it is crystal clearthat violent crimes still remain a huge concern and requires the same swift actionwhich was afforded Mthembu and otherruling party members in the past.
The prioritisation of crime in South Africa seems to be purely geared towardsthose who could further advance or protect their careers and increase their favorin the ruling party at the expense of thenormal citizen, the same citizen you as amember of parliament should be serving.
I trust this letter will serve as a reminderof your position as a servant of the peopleand not a ruler of the people, the samepeople who placed their trust in you toserve them to the best of your abilities andplace their interest above that of your fellowmembersofParliamentandrulingparty members.
This small little fact being somethingall ministers seem to remember only whenvotes are needed.
I implore you and your department toplace the same emphasis on all violentcrimes and solve the cases with the samespeed as has been done in the case of yourfellow MP and ANC member.

WE have all had to deal with disappointment sometime in our lives.
Whether it was that perfectjob you applied for and didn’t get, or thepromotion you expected which didn’t materialise, or simply a beautiful tray of seedlings you planted that were eaten by an ar
my of snails. As hard as it is for adults to work
through a disappointment, it is much harder to see your child struggling to deal withit. To hear her or him cry “but mom it is notfair”.
We all had to learn the harsh lessonthat life is certainly not fair, and it is a difficult one that is often repeated a few timesthroughout one’s life.
Yet, it is possible to grow despite harshblows, because it is not in the disappointment that one learns a lesson, but in theway we handle it. Do you go sit in your bedroom and sulk for a week, or do youstraighten your back with a stern resolveto move on?
One of my biggest disappointments afew years ago was realising that a personwhom I called a friend for many years, toldme so many lies that it was difficult to evenfind a shred of truth in her demeanour.
When I caught her out in a blatant lie,I spent a long time contemplating our“friendship” and realised that final lie waspreceded by others.
I hate being taken advantage of, and Ioften go rather far out my way to help people, whether they are close friends or not.But once bitten, forever shy.
So what did I do with that disappointment?
Now, I tend not to trust people easily. And after that little episode, my circle of
friends shrunk a little more, to the pointwhere I realised how few people in life onecan truly call “friends”.
There are many acquaintances, severalmates and a large group of people that Ienjoy spending time with. But the handfulthat I call my friends have come a long waywith me and have earned the status.
But back to disappointments and howto deal with them. My better half sent mean article about the Finnish armed forceswho dealt with an overwhelming Russianonslaught at the start of World War 2.
Their small army battled and beat themassive Russian wave, relying on a concept that has been part of Finnish culturefor hundreds of years: Sisu.
The article explains that Sisu is a wordthat has no direct translation, but it refersto the idea of continuing to act even in theface of repeated failures and extremeodds.
It is a way of living life by displaying perseveranceevenwhenyouhavereachedtheendofyourmentalandphysicalcapacities.
And therein, I think, lies the secret todealing with challenges or even disappointments. A good friend always says “itis time to pull up your big girl broeks andget on with life”.
It is a waste of time to mull over the disappointment. No, it is not easy to simplyshrug it off either, but to spend weeks agonising over it is useless.
Rather find the lesson, resolve not tobang your head against that particulardoor again and actively search for the positive in any situation.
Facing disappointment head-on

MR NAIRAINSAMY NAIDOO
Once upon a time an angel held my hand,She wiped away my tears and helped me understand. Our time on earth is brief, there’s lessons to be learned,Each precious day God gives us another page is turned.Every chapter is full of memories, times of joy and tears,
Triumphs and defeats, through every passing year. She loved us unconditionally, always by our side,
When no one else would listen, in her we could confide. With gentle words of wisdom she led us on our way,Down the path of righteousness if ever we did stray.
She saw the light in everyone and gave with no regrets,Always from her heart let us not forget.
Angels come in many forms, for me it is my mother,With love I cannot say in words there’ll never be another.
Thank you Ma for all your love and affection that you haveshowered upon us for so many years. We love and miss you
forever and always...

RENOWNED menopause expert Dr PercyMoodley will be giving a talk on menopauseat Alberlito Hospital on 15 November from8.45am to 11am.
Moodley is a specialist obstetrician andgynaecologist (MB Ch B (Natal), FCOG (SA),FRCOG (London), FECSM) with a special interest in the menopausal and sexual health.
He is a committee member of SAMS(South African Menopause Society) andchairperson of the KZN branch of SASHA(South African Sexual Health Association).Menopause, often referred to as the changeof life, occurs at an average age of 51 years.
Clinically, menopause is diagnosed whena lady has missed her periods for a year, saysMoodley.
“It is a biological event and thereforenaturally acquired menopause has a transition period where some patients may havesymptoms even while still having menstruations. The latter must be contrasted with asurgical menopause where the ovaries areremoved during an operation or destroyedby chemotherapy.
“This category of patients has more severe symptoms. The take home message inmenopause is individualisation. Every intervention in medicine has benefits and risks,”said Moodley.
He explains the decision whether to taketherapy will be based on what symptoms apatient has and her individual risk profile.
The three main indications for therapy
include treatment of bothersome symptoms, improvement of bone strength andsexuality.
Patients must improve their knowledge, critically engage their caregivers and makeinformed decisions.
“Improvements in medical science haveensured longevity. Many women will spendone third of their lives in the climacteric(menopause).
“The transitional period of menopauseallows the patient and her doctor or nursepractitioner a unique opportunity to explorepreventive aspects of medicine,” said Moodley.
The onset of many disease processes canbe delayed by appropriate lifestyle changes.
At the talk, a high tea will be served freeof charge.
If you would like to join this discussion.call Pria on 032 946 6957 to RSVP.

MERCEDESBENZ has revised its CLS Coupéwith new design tweaks, upgraded technology and the inclusion of a ninespeed trans
mission. Its iconic design has received improvements to
the front and rear as well as new head and tail lightsfeaturing the automaker’s latest multibeam LEDs.Alternatively, three models are optionally availablewith new multibeam LEDs.

BALLITO Lifesaving Club Nippers completed and passed their Lifesaving SA NipperAwards in Durban on Sunday.
The 11 nippers excelled, especially as foreight of them it was their first ever lifesaving award and they were very nervous.“They really didn't need to be nervous asthey have all worked very hard to be readyfor their exams,” said the club’s Sarah Baillie.
The nippers have all been learning and
training hard since the start of the season, and the hard work paid off with everyoneeasily making their runswimrun times inthe sea and the confidence they showedwhen answering the theory questions onthe beach.
