Does using Road to IELTS improve a candidates score?
We looked at the average scores o 130,711 learners who had
access to three units o Road to IELTS or a period o a month,
prior to taking the test. The fndings, let, show that:
There is a direct correlation between usage and improvement.
The candidates who used it the most improve by as much as
64% on their initial score in a given area. This fgure probably
relates more to amiliarisation with test types than language
improvement.
As the Listening, Reading and Writing activities are closelymodelled on the tests in IELTS, it is reasonable to conclude
that Road to IELTS really will help learners to perorm better in
the IELTS test.

Its so much easier or candidates to do
well in an exam i they know exactly what
to expect. This is where the British
Councils Road to IELTS provides candi-dates with a unique advantage. It
includes 120 hours o intensive work on
vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and
speaking, helping them to develop their
skills to the levels necessary to succeed
in the IELTS test.
And, crucially, the program simulates the
exam itsel, enabling candidates to view
videos o the Speaking test, and to prac-
tise against the clock. The Listening sec-
tion includes timed academic and social
listening activities. Reading activities are
based on an impressive array o authen-
tic texts, with extracts rom The Econo-
mist, New Internationalist, the British
Medical Journal, and many more.
One o the challenges o IELTS prepara-
tion is enabling learners to interpret and
describe charts and tables. Road to
IELTS includes a wealth o these graph-ics in more than 70 individual exercises.
The program includes detailed explana-
tions o each question type in each part o
the exam, and tips on how best to tackle
the tasks.
The units are organised thematically,
using topics commonly ound in the
IELTS test. The frst six units amiliarise
the student with the basic exam ormat.
Units 7-9 consolidate, using more com-plex content, and the last three units use
combination activities which are very simi-
lar to the actual exam.
Give your candidates a real advantage

Feedback on Road to
IELTS from teachers and
students was very positive.
They found it user-friendly.
They liked the way they
could test themselves and
get the answers and marks.
They also liked being able to
repeat exercises if they
needed to. They found the
subjects of the exercises veryuseful and relevant to the

Learners fnd it extremely useul to prac-
tise pronunciation as a sel-study activity.
They can repeat activities as many times
as they like, and can make mistakes with-
out embarrassment. And in class, an ICTresource provides a teacher both with
consistent pronunciation models, and
with interactive activities to keep all
students ocused, and to keep interest
levels high.
So, what will they learn in Clear Pronun-
ciation 1 (Sounds)?
This program helps learners recognise
and pronounce the sounds o English. It
covers 43 phonemes: vowels, conso-nants and diphthongs. Students learn by
watching videos (there are more than 50),
through working with audio clips (there
are over 1,000) and through recording
and listening to their own voice, using the
integrated Clarity Recorder.
Each o the 25 units in the program con-
trasts two sounds, or example head/had,
there/dare, hair/hear. The activities pres-
ent each sound independently, in the con-
text o individual words (in initial, middle
and fnal position), in sentences and in
discrimination activities.
Learners then meet the target sounds in
a real-world context. They might listen to
someone describing a photograph, a
child singing a nursery rhyme or the
repeated vowel sounds in movie titles
(or example the diphthong in Trading
Places and Snakes on a Plane).
The fnal activity is a randomised IPA test
where learners refne and test their knowl-
edge o phonemic symbols. This enablesthem to use phonemic transcriptions in
dictionaries a vital skill.
Clear Pronunciation 1 is the ideal tool
or enabling your learners to master the

Learners listen to how words link in a song
In Clear Pronunciation 2 (Speech), stu-
dents learn to put the sounds o English
together in natural speech. This program
helps them recognise and accurately
produce word stress, sentence stress, consonant clusters, connected speech
and intonation. By the end o the program,
learners have a comprehensive under-
standing o the key eatures o English
pronunciation.
So, how does it work? First, a teacher
clearly explains and illustrates each topic
in a video. Learners then listen to audio
clips, identiy the target pronunciation
eature and practise repeating it. The inte-
grated Recorder enables users to record
their voice and assess their pronunciation
against a native speaker. I they want to,
they can save their recordings as MP3
fles, and monitor their progress over time.
Thus ar the activities are very controlled.
But Clear Pronunciation2 also exposes
learners to the target elements o pronun-
ciation in real-lie speech. For example,
learners watch a video about the 2012
Olympics, listen to a pop song, and
watch a series o 32 unscripted inter-views.
Clear Pronunciation 2 includes a wide
range o speakers: male and emale;
young and middle-aged; English, Scot-
tish, Australian, New Zealand, North
American, Chinese, Indian. Learners are
thereore exposed to the variety o
accents they should expect to encounter
in real lie.
This program is ideal both or classwork
and as a sel-study resource. Enjoyable,
interactive and challenging, Clear Pro-
nunciation 2 is the perect tool or help-
ing your learners to recognise and pro-

Most teachers love reading, but it can be
a challenge to generate the same enthusi-
asm in our students. This is exactly what
Clarity's Active Reading sets out to
achieve.
The starting point is to present texts
which are relevant, stimulating and lively.
Topics range rom advertisements or
diets to Internet posts on wireless gam-
ing to ecotourism. Text types include
newspaper and magazine articles, emails,
poems, recipes, stories and press
releases. Theres lots o variety, and
topics to appeal to every learner.
The program ocuses on the complete
range o reading skills and subskills, rom
skimming and scanning to topic sen-
tences, prediction and inerence. It also
helps learners develop their vocab strate-
gies and, vitally, it encourages them to
develop the reading habit. For a list o
reading skills covered, see below.
Active Reading intelligently integrates
reading with other skills. A text on ashion
leads on to an activity where learners
create their own advertisement or a
watch; a unit on recipes takes students
online to research recipes rom dierent
countries. This means speaking and writ-
ing are key ingredients in each unit. And
learners can listen to a range o native
speakers reading the texts, helping them
to identiy sense groups and develop
their chunking skills.
The program comes at six levels rom
Elementary to Advanced, with ten units in
each level. Each unit starts with a video
introduction, moves through controlled
practice and comprehension exercises
and concludes with a reer activity which
expands on the topic. Active Reading
can be used or classwork, homework or
sel-access. The program integrates with
Results Manager enabling teachers to
track student progress and generate
reports.

In 2009 teachers at Abu
Dhabi Mens College used
Author Plus to create a brand
new resource: i-Read. This
program is designed to provide
reading practice in a local,
culturally-sensitive context.
i-Read has proved extremely
popular with students, and won
the coveted Nikai Award for
Teaching Innovation.
Author Plus has been used to create all the programs below.
Author Plus
No publisher can meet the needs o all
teachers and all students, and thats
where Author Plus comes in. This
program enables you to create your own
interactive activities, aimed at your
students exact needs, and to deliver
them on a network, online or through
your VLE. The program is easy to use,
both or teachers and learners, and has a
wide range o exercise types including
multiple choice, gapfll, proo reading,
text reconstruction and drag and drop.
As a teacher, you have complete control
over the content, and over the years
teachers have made exercises or busi-
ness English, vocabulary, listening and
reading practice, and exam preparation.
You could start by turning the paper-
based exercises you have created in
Word into interactive reading, speaking,
writing and vocab activities.Author Plus
includes an image bank and enables you
to add your own graphics, audio and
video fles, and to link to PowerPoints
and websites.
The program provides detailed teacher
support: a ull colour manual, context sen-
sitive help and tutorials, so its really quick
and easy to get started. You can also use
Author Plus to add to and adapt Clarity
content programs such as Tense Buster,
bringing them directly in line with the inter-
ests and learning needs o your students.
