THE SUMMER 2015
CHALLENGER Challenging the community, families, and individuals to make a difference
A Publication of the Darlington County Disabilities & Special Needs Board
Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board
Our Mission: To enhance the lives, develop the abilities, and promote the independence of people with disabilities.
2015 Annual Picnic at Bridging the Gap Everyone enjoyed the cookout, fun and games provided by the Family
Advisory Council.
“We, the ones who are challenged, need to be heard. To be seen not as a
disability, but as a person who has and will continue to bloom. To be
seen not only as a handicap, but as a well intact human being.” -Robert M. Hensel
The Family Advisory Council Needs Family
Members and Advocates Help! The Family Advisory Council (FAC) is an organization of supporters of Darlington County Disabilities & Special
Needs Board that is comprised of interested consumers, family members and advocates. The FAC promotes under-
standing between families and DCDSNB by providing a forum for the exchange of information, ideas and concerns,
as well as a chance to meet and fellowship with other family members. Meetings are held quarterly on Monday
nights at 6:00 p.m. The FAC provides support through a wide range of fundraising activities to fund special parties
and events during the year for those we serve, their family members and staff. DCDSNB receives State and Federal
funds to cover most of the needs of the consumers. However, these monies cannot be used to fund parties and so-
cial events such as, the Valentine Social, Spring Picnic, Summer Day at the Movies, Fall Dance, Thanksgiving Din-
ner and the Christmas Party. These events are highlights of the year for our consumers, and would not be possible
without the support of the FAC. The FAC needs YOUR HELP! If you are a FAMILY MEMBER or ADVO-
CATE for our Consumers—Please contact your Case Manager or the Scott Center for more details. 843-332-7252

SUMMER CARE Summer is a wonderful time of the year—barbecues, water sports, sun-bathing and vacations. However all of us, caregivers and cared for, will enjoy the time more safely if we take some sensible precautions. NEV-
ER leave a person in a closed vehicle. The temperature rises quickly and can be fatal.
We need to be especially careful for persons who are on some specific medications. Please check with your healthcare staff. Some medica-
tions will reduce the body’s ability to adjust to hot weather. Remember to avoid heat, reduce activity, drink plenty of water.

Case Management Department is ecstatic about the services we have the opportunity to assist consumers
with daily. Recently, a consumer who is a recipient of DDSN HASCI
Waiver was in a motor vehicle acci-
dent and her fully handicapped
equipped van was a total loss. HAS-
CI Waiver approved for a new Pri-
vate Vehicle Modification to be
complete so that Mrs. Ford’s needs
could continue to be met. Teshawn & Bonnie at the
