We call attention to the letter signed by a largenumber of inflnential citizens of all parties invitingWM. G. HARRISON, Esq., to become a candidatefor Congress in the Fourth District. We have al-ready announced Mr. HARRISON'S acceptance, and

t have expressed our unqualified respect for-liis char-acter and capacity with our best wishes for hissuccess. It rests with the people of the District

WJ to determine whether the signers of the call haveinterpreted public feeling aright in asking MrHARRISON to be their candidate. That they willendorse the action thus taken we will not permitourselves to doubt The list, as published, includesbut a small portion of the names of the citizens at

whose request Mr. HARRISON lias reluctantly con-

sented to be placed before the public.

In presenting yesterday morning, an accuratethough abbreviated report of the speech of the Hon.HENRV WINTER DAVIS, to the Americans of the18th ward, we think we have rendered an ac-

ceptable public service. Till now there mayhave been some who were willing to distinguishbetween that gentleman and his party, and even

?- to believe that in presenting him a third time, as

its candidate, it offered some expiation for a por-tion of its misdeeds. With a reputation for abil-ity, certainly not so well founded, as extensive, and a personal character which, if not distin-guished by acts of public or private virtue, wasat least sullied by no apparent stain, the nomineeof the clubs might have held aloof from open co-operation with them, and passed among char-itable men as rather the victim of circumstan-ces he could not control, than one of the leadersof the organized revolt against public decency andhonest living. Although we never could considerMr. DAVIS' acceptance of a candidate's position, conferred as his was, as other than a fatal surren-

der of the self-respect which should characterizean honorable man, we rejoice that he has himselfassumed the task of dissipating all delusions as tothe position which he deserves to hold, and of de-monstrating that no matter who may have mistakenhim, that weakness was not in any degree sharedby his club-constituents. We were not withoutsome expectation that the correctness of onr reportmight have been questioned, and that Mr. DAVISwould have deemed it expedient as on formeroccasions, perhaps, to deny yesterday what lie haduttered the day before. The afternoon organ, however, only quarrels with the meagreness of ourreport of the speech, which, with characteristicimbecility, it chuckles over, as "pourinc hot shot"into the enemy," and from which it quotes withreal and natural zest some of the most offensiveportions. With this positive and negative evi-dence of ils substantial correctness, ourcomment upon it need not assume in any degree ahypothetical form, and we therefore propose to sub-mit a few plain remarks upon it in a very plainway. Its repetitions of misrepresentations whichby their frequency have grown familiar to thiscommunity, and perhaps, so mucli so to theirauthor, as not in his mind to be readily distin-guished from the truth, we pass entirely over. They are points in which Ihere will be a widedifference between Mr. DAVIS and the honest his-torian who shall hereafter write of them. Weintend now only to speak of the open and unmis-takeablc affiliation on his part with club-ruffianismevinced as well by the excuses offered for the vio-lence perpetrated at the late elections as the in-ducements held out for increased nbuses at thntwhich is approaching and on which his future po-sition depends. Mr. DAVIS invokes attention to thedangerous designs of the Reformers in the follow-ing language:"Icall your attention again to one of their resolutions-'We are resolved that all who seek to molest or interferewithvoters shall be visited with the heaviest penalty of

the law.' That is the purpose of the Reform movementIt is a secret organization to prosecute men who violatethe law, and if nny make a disturbance on the day ofelection, the Sheriff shall have power to keep them con-fined during that day. If theysncceed in electing theSheriff, that is the use they will make of him ff theysucceed at this time, then, on next day of election whenthe full play of freemen's spirit, ought not to be con-trolled by any harsh application of law, nor individualconduct be closely inspected, on that day they mean toclothe the Sheriff with extraordinary and illegal powerWhat willbe the result of this ? They are not to be re-leased durtng the day of election."

For such heinous intentions on the partof the Reformers Mr. DAVIS has no lan-guage too harsh and insulting. What he meansby the "lull play of freemen's spirits" we may-gather from what he subsequently says of the eventsof that day:

"Some men may have got stack with pins, there mnvhave been a little fighting, and a few black eyes agoingbut that is nothing but what occurs everywhere It isprobable that we shall hare a fair Grand Jury and a fairPetit Jury, but if they succeed in electing the Sheriff wewillhave neither the one nor the other. lam ridiculingthe preposterous howl that is made over so small amatter.'' 1

This is an evident allusion to the gentlemen whohave made their statements to the public, and whowere respectable names'here, before, profugus fatis,Mr. DAVIS did us the honor to bringhis household gods into our midst. Oneof these stood at the 10th ward polls withontflinching or even losing temper, while twenty-three stabs were inflicted on his person by scoun-drels with awls and needles, and yet (he Hon.H. WINTER DAVIS, in the presence of ruffians likethese, dares to characterize the simple and man-ly statement of this brave gentleman as a "pre-posterous howl over a small matter." Fromsuch remarks on his part, can we draw any- otherinference than that he wished his hearers to con-tinue to practice the same outrages at the nextelection? And is there any doubt that they willtake him at his word?

In language which we shall not imitate, Mr. DA-VIS repels a charge which he declares is whispered, but which nobody attempts to make openly :

"Whether it is the charge or corruption against HenryClay anil Daniel Webster, or of Abolitionism againstHenry Winter Davis, truth or lie, it i> the same unblush-ing, continuous yelp."

Nothing perhaps, but his peculiar modesty, pre-vented Mr. DAVIS from appropriating the "un-"blushing yelp" entirely to himself. His sharingit with HENRV CLAY and DANIEL WEBSTER, is aconcession to good taste which will be duly appre-ciated. His sensitiveness to what he pronounces aslander not breathed aloud, might have at leasttaught him not to launch from the hustings andwithout the smallest qualification such an assertionas this :

"Mr. D. said we allknow that about a year ago we had aVigilance Committee, disguised under tlie City ReformAssociation, but they melted away during the winter, forit was a very warm one. One man published an articlein The American, another one in The Exchange saying'Why don't we get tip a meeting ?' Thinks Ito myself!what has become of the Vigilance Committee v But un-der the cold winter their patriotism bad become frozenup."

Upon this point we cannot be mistaken in say-ing, that Mr. DAVIS perfectly well knows thenames of most of the gentlemen who originatedthat movement. He knows, as well, thatthey entertained no purpose they did not avow;and avowed no purpose they did not entertain. It is, therefore, clearly impossible that he couldhave believed a statement which it appears lie didnot hesitate to make.

THE CASE OF ItfSHOF ONDERDONK.We learn from the New York Express something

definite with regard to the fate of the movementinitiated for the purpose of compassing the restora-tion of Bishop Onderdonk. In the first place a mo-tion (hostile) to postpone the whole.snbiect indefi-nitely was lost by a vote of about three to one. A

motion for simple restoration, unrestricted and un-conditipned, was defeated by a vote of26 to 8, theProvisional Bishop of New York requesting to beexcused from voting. A motion was made by theBishop of South Carolina that the Memorial ofBishop OnderdoDk could not be entertained with-out the previous resignation of big jurisdiction. Be-fore the question was taken on this, a substitutewas offered by the Bishop of Illinois, by whichBishop Onderdonk would be restored to office, andto theexereise of all the functions of the sacredministry; but not restored to the exercise of hisjurisdiction. This would leave it in the power ofthe House to restore him to the exercise of jnrisdic-*tion also, at any future time, should they find it ad-visable.

We since learn by telegraph, that the proposi-, ldhvve°.an Ueb

, A 1 OUNG MAN SUOT BY A FRIEND. ?On SundayI evening la3t a young man, named Wm. M. Geekie,

was shot at Newark, N. J., by a man named DanielW. Horton, causing death almost immediately. Itappears that the two had been out together duringthe day, and in the evening Mr. and Mrs. Hortonand Mr. Geekie were sitting at a table together, conversing, when Mrs. Horton accused her husband,in a playful manner, of having been drinking.?This he denied, ami appealed to .Mr. G. to corrobo-rate the trnth ofhis statement. Mr. G. replied, "Ido not want to expose you." Mr. H. then took upa revolver, which, on laying oil his overcoat, hehad taken from his pocket and placed upon the ta-

l ble, and pointing it at Mr. G., said, "Have I beendrinking?" At that moment the pistol went off,and the ball entering the mouth of Mr. Geekie, hedied without speaking, and with scarcely a motion.Mrs. H. immediately fainted away, ana Mr. H ran

; to the door and shouted for help. The neighbors, came in, and, finding the victim of the sad occur-

: rence dead, the body was allowed to remain in theposition in which it was found until the arrival ofthe coroner. Mr. Horton was taken in charge byChief of Police Whitney, and is held to await theaction of the coroner's jury. Geekie was 22 yearsof age, a native of Glasgow , Scotland, and has norelatives in this country. Mr. H. was an intimatefriend of the deceased, and is plunged in the deep, est grief at the sad occurrence.
