TheDanielScheansScholarshipwasestablishedin1998inmemoryofProfessorScheans,abelovedfacultymemberofthePortlandStateUniversityAnthropologyDepartmentfrom1965to1989.Asocio-culturalanthropologist,ProfessorScheanswasadedicatedscholarandteacherwhobelievedstronglyinhisundergraduatestudentsandinthevalueofAnthropology.

Theawardofbetween$500-$1000willbemadeeachyearbasedonscholasticachievementandmerit.

Theawardisnotrenewable,butstudentsmayapplymorethanonceforthescholarship.

Therecipientoftheaward:

a)mustbeanundergraduateanthropologymajorandafulltimestudent(12credits/quarter)inspringquarter,whenthescholarshipisissued;

b)mustbeenrolledtwooutthreequartersintheyeartheyapply;and

b)musthavecompletedaminimumof20credithoursinanthropology.

ThomasM.NewmanwasafoundingfacultymemberofthePortlandStateUniversityAnthropologyDepartmentfrom1959to1982.AnArchaeologist,ProfessorNewmanwasadedicatedscholarandteacherwhobelievedstronglyinhisstudentsandinthevalueofAnthropology.Theawardwasestablishedinhismemory.

Theawardisbetween$500-$1000eachyear,whichwillbegiventoanoutstandingAnthropologygraduatestudent,whoshowspromiseintheirresearchandfuturecareerinanthropology.

Theawardisnotrenewable,butstudentsmayapplymorethanonetime.

Thefundcanbeissuedinseveralways,including:

a)asascholarshipappliedtowardstuition,whichwouldbeadministeredthroughFinancialAid;

b)asacheckforreimbursementofqualifyingexpensesthatareessentialtothecompletionofyourdegree(e.g.,expensesforthesisorinternshipresearch,books,radiocarbondatesforaproject,traveltomuseums,workingwithcommunities);

c)asacheckdirectlypaidtothestudentasanemployeeornon-employee.Paymentinthiswayistaxable.

Program-PartofSanFrancisco'sOfficeofResilience&CapitalPlanningCityandCountyofSanFranciscoInternshipswithSanFrancisco'sEarthquakeSafetyImplementationProgramareavailableforSummer2018.TheCityandCountyofSanFrancisco'sCommunityActionPlanforSeismicSafetystudy,completedin2010,providedananalysisofanticipatedimpactsthatlikelyscenarioearthquakesmighthaveontheCity,includingphysical,social,cultural,economicandotherfactors.Thatstudyledtospecificrecommendedactionstoreducethoseimpacts.SanFranciscoleadersarecommittedtoimplementingthoserecommendations.Ourprogramsupportsthatimplementation.

Personswhowishtobepartofthisinternshipprogramshouldbegraduatestudentsorrecentgraduatesinthefieldofpublicpolicy,engineering,urbangeography,communications,oranotherfieldthatwouldlinktoadesiredseismichazardmitigationoutcome.Atthistime,allinternshipsareunpaid.

ThisprogramwillbeconductedfromJune4,2018throughAugust17,2018.Internswillworkatleast30hoursperweekoutoftheEPICENTERindowntownSanFrancisco.

WorkingwithOfficeofResilience&CapitalPlanningstaffandprofessionalcolleagues,eachinternisexpectedtodefineandaccomplishoneormorespecificprojecttasks,aswellastoparticipateingeneralprogramactivities,includingseminars,specialactivities,andfieldtrips.

Interestedpersonsshouldsubmitaresumeandaonepagestatementofinterest,providinggeneralinformationabouttheirareasofinterestinafieldrelatedtoseismichazardmitigation.Pleaseemailinformationtotheaddressbelow.

1.DataanalysisandpolicyrecommendationsbasedonSanFrancisco'songoingprivateschoolsseismicevaluationproject.

2.Assistindevelopmentofmaterialsforupcoming"EarthquakeRetrofitInitiative"forone-andtwo-familyhomes.

3.Researchandpreparedemonstrationsofunusualtechnologiesthatmayhaveapplicationtoseismicimprovementinexistingbuildings,suchashighshear-strengthglassinstorefronts,windowfilmtolimitdamageofglazing,useofgaragedoorsaslateralforce-resistingelements,etc.

4.DevelopaprogramtoencourageuseofSanFrancisco'sexistingtransfertaxincentive,allowingaportionoftaxesattimeofpropertysaletobeusedforseismicimprovements.

5.Researchstate-of-the-artstrong-motioninstrumentationthatcanbeusedinSanFranciscobuildings.

6.Datacollectionandanalysisrelatedtoearthquakeimpactsonassistedlivingfacilitiesandsimilarspecialpurposefacilities.

7.Datacollectionandanalysisrelatedtoearthquakeimpactsonlargeassemblyfacilities(300+personoccupancy).

8.Supportworkunderwayregardingnon-ductileconcretebuildings.-theseareafewofmanyprojectsthatcouldbeundertakenduringthisSummer2018internshipprogram.

11thAnnualCulturalResourceProtectionSummit

Wearegearingupforthe11thAnnualCulturalResourceProtectionSummitonMay23-24attheSuquamishTribe’sHouseofAwakenedCulturenearPoulsbo,WA.

Thisyear,theSummitagendaincludesanengagingarrayofcutting-edgetopicsthatwillencourageattendeestoexaminethebenefitsofalandscapeapproachandhowitmightinformworkablesolutionsfortoday’smostpressingchallengestoeffectiveculturalresourceprotection.

Also,theSummitAgendaPlanningCommitteeinvitesstudents(andothers)toapplyforafreeSummitregistrationdonatedbyoureventproducer,thenonprofitEppardVision.AllsubmissionsareduebyApril23.TheCommitteewillreviewthesubmissionsandawardonefreeregistrationineachofthefollowingcategories:Tribes,agencies,consultants,andstudents.WinnerswillbenotifiedonMay1.

CultureinGozoandMalta|OfftheBeatenTrack2018

TheHoneybee-CulturefieldschoolinGozoandMaltaisbeingofferedthissummer.Theaimofthiscollaborativeresearchprojectistogainandexchangeexperiencesinanthropologicalandinterdisciplinaryresearchontopicsconcerningbeekeepingandrelatedfields.

TheprojectisembeddedintheOfftheBeatenTrackfieldschool.TheprogramstartswithanintroductiontothefieldschoolandtoGozobyteammembersandlocalexperts.Basedontheideasofeachparticipant,individualresearchtopicsarefurtherrefinedindiscussionwiththegroup.Participantsareencouragedtoexperimentwithdifferentwaysofdoingresearchtoenhancetheirfieldworkskills,gainpracticalexperience,anddevelopaprofessionalcompetence.Asweareaimingforaninterdisciplinaryapproach,studentsandresearchersfromavarietyofpracticaloracademicbackgroundsareverywelcometoapply(e.g.fromthehumanities,biology,environmentaloragriculturalstudies,human-animalstudies,historicalsciences,arts,andothers.)Theobjectiveoftheprojectistofinalizeapublishedjournalvolumecontainingarticlesfromeachparticipant.Theprojectitselfisfocusedonfieldwork,datacollection,andprimaryanalysis.Writingandeditingofthearticleswillbedoneafterwardsthroughonlinecollaboration.

AppliedGroundPenetratingRadar(GPR)IntensiveFieldschool

TheAppliedGroundPenetratingRadarWorkshopisdesignedasanintensive6-daylaboratoryandfieldschoolinallaspectsofgroundpenetratingradarinvestigation,fromtheoreticalprinciplestosurveydesign,fieldpreparation,datacollection,indepthanalysis,reportwriting,andpodiumpresentation.Ourparticipants,in2-3personteams,willlearnthetheoryandmethodsinvolvedinGPRexplorationinvariousenvironments.TheywillfamiliarizethemselveswiththeGPRinstrumentation,inthiscontexttheNoggin500Unit(SmartTow–RoughTerrainConfiguration)inasimple,urbansetting,whilelocatingburiedutilities.Oncethebasicsareacquired,ourparticipantswillexploreaportionofaburiedRomanvilla,anenvironmentwithseveralspecific,welldefinedtargetstobelocatedandmapped.Thelastthreedayswillbedevotedtooriginalresearch,inamultilayered,targetrichenvironment,ranginginhumanoccupationfrompre-Romantomodernperiods.
