Winter Career + Internship Fair Dates WINTER CAREER + INTERNSHIP FAIR EVENT DETAILS DATE: Tuesday, February 27th (All Majors) and Wednesday, February 28th (STEM) TIME: 11:00am - 3:00pm LOCATION: Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) Ballroom, 3rd Floor FREE and open to all PSU students and alumni Summer 2018 Internship Opportunities with San Francisco's Earthquake Safety Implementation Program -Part of San Francisco's Office of Resilience & Capital Planning City and County of San Francisco Internships with San Francisco's Earthquake Safety Implementation Program are available for Summer 2018. The City and County of San Francisco's Community Action Plan for Seismic Safety study, completed in 2010, provided an analysis of anticipated impacts that likely scenario earthquakes might have on the City, including physical, social, cultural, economic and other factors. That study led to specific recommended actions to reduce those impacts. San Francisco leaders are committed to implementing those recommendations. Our program supports that implementation. Persons who wish to be part of this internship program should be graduate students or recent graduates in the field of public policy, engineering, urban geography, communications, or another field that would link to a desired seismic hazard mitigation outcome. At this time, all internships are unpaid. This program will be conducted from June 4, 2018 through August 17, 2018. Interns will work at least 30 hours per week out of the EPICENTER in downtown San Francisco. Working with Office of Resilience & Capital Planning staff and professional colleagues, each intern is expected to define and accomplish one or more specific project tasks, as well as to participate in general program activities, including seminars, special activities, and field trips. Interested persons should submit a resume and a one page statement of interest, providing general information about their areas of interest in a field related to seismic hazard mitigation. Please email information to the address below. Listed below are some possible Summer 2018 Internship projects; we are open to other projects that advance San Francisco's seismic hazard mitigation goals. Feel free to contact Laurence Kornfield with questions. Email: [email protected] Phone: 415-307-6707 Possible Projects for Summer 2018 Internships 1. Data analysis and policy recommendations based on San Francisco's ongoing private schools seismic evaluation project. 2. Assist in development of materials for upcoming "Earthquake Retrofit Initiative" for one- and two-family homes. 3. Research and prepare demonstrations of unusual technologies that may have application to seismic improvement in existing buildings, such as high shear-strength glass in storefronts, window film to limit damage of glazing, use of garage doors as lateral force-resisting elements, etc. 4. Develop a program to encourage use of San Francisco's existing transfer tax incentive, allowing a portion of taxes at time of property sale to be used for seismic improvements. 5. Research state-of-the-art strong-motion instrumentation that can be used in San Francisco buildings. 6. Data collection and analysis related to earthquake impacts on assisted living facilities and similar special purpose facilities. 7. Data collection and analysis related to earthquake impacts on large assembly facilities (300+ person occupancy). 8. Support work underway regarding non-ductile concrete buildings. - these are a few of many projects that could be undertaken during this Summer 2018 internship program. 11th Annual Cultural Resource Protection Summit We are gearing up for the 11th Annual Cultural Resource Protection Summit on May 23-24 at the Suquamish Tribe’s House of Awakened Culture near Poulsbo, WA. This year, the Summit agenda includes an engaging array of cutting-edge topics that will encourage attendees to examine the benefits of a landscape approach and how it might inform workable solutions for today’s most pressing challenges to effective cultural resource protection. Also, the Summit Agenda Planning Committee invites students (and others) to apply for a free Summit registration donated by our event producer, the nonprofit Eppard Vision. All submissions are due by April 23. The Committee will review the submissions and award one free registration in each of the following categories: Tribes, agencies, consultants, and students. Winners will be notified on May 1. For more information and to register, visit the Leadership Series website . Culture in Gozo and Malta | Off the Beaten Track 2018 The Honeybee-Culture field school in Gozo and Malta is being offered this summer. The aim of this collaborative research project is to gain and exchange experiences in anthropological and interdisciplinary research on topics concerning beekeeping and related fields. The project is embedded in the Off the Beaten Track field school. The program starts with an introduction to the field school and to Gozo by team members and local experts. Based on the ideas of each participant, individual research topics are further refined in discussion with the group. Participants are encouraged to experiment with different ways of doing research to enhance their fieldwork skills, gain practical experience, and develop a professional competence. As we are aiming for an interdisciplinary approach, students and researchers from a variety of practical or academic backgrounds are very welcome to apply (e.g. from the humanities, biology, environmental or agricultural studies, human-animal studies, historical sciences, arts, and others.) The objective of the project is to finalize a published journal volume containing articles from each participant. The project itself is focused on fieldwork, data collection, and primary analysis. Writing and editing of the articles will be done afterwards through online collaboration. Session Dates Session 1: June 5 - June 24, 2018 Session 2: July 2 - July 21, 2018 Session 3: July 29 - August 17, 2018 This field school is perfect for everyone with a genuine interest in the topic and are encouraged to apply. No experience is strictly needed. To apply, and for more information, please request an application form for the Off the Beaten Track Program from the Anthropology Field School website . It is also mandatory to contact the program director, Sam Janssen, beforehand concerning your research ideas at: [email protected] Surfing & Sustainability Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica Just wanted to bring to your attention the Summer 2018 Surfing & Sustainability: Political Ecology in Costa Rica Study Abroad program.
