Service Demarcation
Ethernet services offer bandwidth and cost efficiency
compared to the legacy services they replace, but vendor-
specific implementations often prevent streamlined operations,
administration and maintenance (OAM), driving up OpEx and
placing significant demands on support and operations staff.
Accedian Networks hardware-based, high-performance
EtherNID™ and MetroNID™ packet assurance demarcation
units help operators regain control of their Ethernet services,
increasing the value of every packet flowing through their
networks. Installed as a transparent, in-line service demarc at
customer premises, cell-sites, carrier hand-off points, hubs,
aggregation nodes, COs and mobile switching centers,
EtherNID and MetroNID units define the boundaries of your
network and services without impacting customer traffic.
With a network clearly demarcated and defined, service
providers can establish end-to-end, standards based OAM
regardless of network technology and topology.
Layer 1-4 Loopback Testing
Loopback testing allows service providers to accelerate the
diagnosis and repair of network & QoS issues - without a far-
end test set, truck roll, or waiting for maintenance windows.

In-Service Throughput &
Automated RFC-2544 Test Suite
Advanced throughput and RFC-2544 test capabilities allow
service providers to perform fully automated and documented
turn-up tests, then monitor committed and excess throughput in-
service without disrupting customer traffic.
With seamless in-line, in-service testing, there’s no waiting for
maintenance windows to validate and troubleshoot Ethernet
services. It’s only throughput measurement technique available
that tests services under real-world traffic conditions – providing
a true picture of the customer’s QoS experience, and permitting
throughput monitoring for SLA validation.
Using a unique, patent-pending approach, EtherNID™ and
MetroNID™ units use actual customer traffic as part of the overall
test pattern to validate committed throughput, burst performance,
delay, jitter and frame loss. Tests can be unidirectional or
bidirectional with independent throughput tests in each direction.

Performance Monitoring
Map out the Health of your Network™ and monitor critical
SLA parameters including with Accedian Networks’ PAA™
Performance Assurance Agent.
A key part of Accedian Networks SLA-Meter™, The PAA
generates a sparse but continuous stream of time-stamped
Y.1731 test packets between EtherNID and MetroNID packet
assurance demarcation units, which use a patent-pending in-
band synchronization technique to provide one-way end-to-
end delay and jitter measurements to microsecond resolution
– no GPS timing source required *.
The PAA also measures frame-loss and monitors service
availability in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, mesh network
topologies and for multicast services – each EtherNID or
MetroNID unit can create up to 100 test streams to other
units, each with specified flow characteristics.
PAA packets are tagged with specified customer / provider
VLAN ID, service level and bandwidth class to precisely
capture the behaviour of multiple SLA flows in real-time.
The fully-automated RFC-2544 Test Suite simplifies
performance assurance with straightforward traffic stream
setup, user-defined test parameters and thresholds, and
comprehensive results reporting – a complete turn-up test and
service baseline solution integrated into the service endpoints.

SLA Creation & Assurance
SLA Creation
Accedian Networks’ ESAP™ Ethernet Service Assurance
Platform not only keeps services up and running – it helps to
create them just as easily. Drive new revenue by deploying
end-to-end Ethernet transparent LAN services with guaranteed
performance and availability over any network – without
disturbing your switches or your customers.
Ideal for operators with mixed-vendor, multi-technology
networks, EVC service mapping transparently creates Ethernet
LAN services and avoids interoperability issues that result in
provisioning delays and costly network upgrades.
Map services with advanced bandwidth policies, enforce them
with per-flow traffic control and aggregate multiple customers
directly at the demarcation point. Zero-latency traffic shaping
functionality accelerates access links and optimizes QoS.
Traffic filtering protects VLANs and blocks unwanted traffic
from flooding your network, while bandwidth policing eases
congestion and protects core performance.
With the Fast-Thru™ hardware architecture, EtherNID packet
assurance demarcation units maintain EVCs at GbE wire
speed without adding delay or jitter to critical, real-time traffic.
Easily configured remotely, building EVCs is as simple as
installing EtherNID units at the demarc-points and provisioning
services from the web.
SLA-Meter™ Service Assurance
Accedian Networks SLA-Meter™ combines three advanced
ESAP test functions into a complete in-service SLA assessment
and validation tool. The PAA Performance Assurance Agent
provides one-way jitter and delay measurement with an
industry-leading microsecond resolution, while advanced per-
SLA flow traffic statistics – stored directly on-board EtherNID
and MetroNID demarcation units – provide usage information for
trending and troubleshooting.
Industry unique in-service throughput testing validates SLA-
specified committed and excess bandwidth profiles and burst
performance (CIR, EIR, CBS, EBS) and frame loss without
affecting customer traffic..

Service Mapping
Drive new revenue by deploying end-to-end Ethernet
transparent LAN services with guaranteed performance and
availability over any network – without disturbing your
switches or your customers – with ESAP’s Ethernet service
mapping for EtherNID™ & MetroNID™ demarcation units.
Service mapping allows providers to quickly create Ethernet
Virtual Circuits (EVCs) for E-Line, E-LAN, and E-Tree
services over mixed-vendor, multi-carrier and multi-
technology networks, regardless of the access platform or
network topology servicing a particular customer or cell-site.
Services can be mapped with advanced bandwidth policies
that establish committed and excess throughput and burst
rates (CIR, EIR, EBS, CBS), as well as defined Ethernet & IP
service priorities. Mapping is performed by classifying traffic
based on a rich frame-characteristic filter set, then selectively
pushing VLAN tags onto the appropriate frames as they pass
through the demarc unit. When mapped frames arrive at the
far-end destination, the corresponding EtherNID or MetroNID
unit pops off the VLAN tag and delivers the frame to the
customer site exactly as it was transmitted.
The EVC service mapping feature supports Q-in-Q
encapsulation, ensuring complete Layer 1, 2, 2.5 and 3
transparency over any network or combination of networks.
Integrated bandwidth policing protects core network
performance and ensures that EVCs live up to their SLA
guarantees.
With the advanced packet processing capabilities of the Fast-
Thru™ architecture, EtherNID and MetroNID units perform
service mapping in real-time without adding delay or jitter to
real-time and QoS sensitive traffic.
Use ESAP’s service creation functionality to provision Ethernet services
over any network – without replacing or configuring network elements.
Optimize & assure service performance with hardware-based traffic
conditioning & multi-port aggregation directly at the demarcation point.

Traffic Conditioning
Once a service is created, ESAP’s advanced networking
functionality helps to assure service QoS by conditioning
traffic with hardware-based filtering, rate-limiting and shaping
directly at the service demarcation point.
With traffic conditioning often more capable than features
offered by most switches or routers, EtherNID and MetroNID
units offer a uniform, carrier-grade solution to controlling end-
to-end service QoS over converged networks – even in
leased networks where providers doesn’t own the local
access equipment.

Bandwidth Policing
EtherNID™ and MetroNID™ packet assurance
demarcation units support intelligent bandwidth policing on
up to 60 flows in both upstream and downstream
directions. Also known as rate limiting or traffic regulation,
ESAP’s bandwidth policing functionality assures the QoS of
real-time applications such as VoIP, video, and
transactional services by establishing committed
throughput and burst profiles per VLAN, source or
destination address and service level.
Policing helps to preserve the performance of metro and
transport networks – throttling customer traffic at the edge
reduces traffic congestion and network element processing
overhead. It also allows service providers to offer
bandwidth on demand when requested by customers or
required for new service provisioning – without
reconfiguring or replacing network elements.
Performed at full wire-speed by the Fast-Thru™ hardware-
based architecture and packet processing engine,
EtherNID and MetroNID units perform bandwidth policing
without added jitter or delay – providing carrier-grade
switch functionality at a fraction of the cost.

When enabled on MetroNID packet assurance demarcation
devices, Zero-Latency Traffic Shaping allows providers to
accelerate services and economize bandwidth in high-
performance business access and wireless backhaul
applications – independent of access platforms and
customer switches, and for a fraction of the cost.
Packets are categorized then passed or queued at wire-
speed as they flow through MetroNID units. Highly granular
classification criteria include destination and source address,
TCP or UDP port, VLAN, service level and bandwidth class.

Traffic Filtering
Improve network performance and maintain best-in-class QoS
by blocking unwanted traffic from entering your network:
preserve management VLANs and filter out broadcast and
malicious traffic at the service edge.
Hardware-based processing provides full wire-speed filtering
tailored by sophisticated layer 1-4 packet selection rules,
including VLAN, Ethernet/IP address, Ethertype, service class,
TCP/UDP port or any logical combination.
Multi-Port Aggregation
Real-time multi-port aggregation combines traffic from up to
four client ports into a single GbE network port. Traffic can be
de-aggregated by VLAN, MAC / IP addresses, or sophisticated
layer 2-4 packet selection criteria.
Service mapping, bandwidth policing, traffic shaping and
filtering can be applied per-port or per-service flow, providing
complete traffic management and service creation capabilities
normally found only in costly routers and switches.
