0504 Final Report 2019 Yard Container Crane Deliveries| IntroductionIntroduction| Final Report 2019 Yard Container Crane Deliveries
INTRODUCTION
Based on original data gathered from port
equipment manufacturers around the world, the
objective of the annual survey is to determine
market size and scope by equipment delivery
volumes for yard container gantry cranes, including:
• Rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs)
• Electrified rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs)
• Rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs)
• Automated stacking cranes (ASCs)
Prior to 2011 this information had been published
in the trade press, but as a result of changes in
magazine publication this is no longer the case.
Information continues to be published in the
trade press for yard container cranes on order at a
specific date in time for delivery in future months.
However, there are no data readily available
for precise delivery numbers during a given
calendar year.
Following cessation of the earlier mentioned
trade press report, crane manufacturers were
asked whether a survey of past annual delivery
numbers was useful information for them and
there was a resoundingly positive response.
PEMA is committed to promoting and supporting
the global role of port equipment and technology
and in order to fill the gap in industry information
commissioned the survey of 2011 through 2018
deliveries and does so again this year.
For similar reasons, PEMA has also commissioned
a report on annual deliveries of ship-to-shore
container cranes. These two surveys for 2019
together complement the well-established PEMA
Annual Global Survey on Mobile Port Equipment
Deliveries, covering reach stackers, lift trucks and
terminal tractors.
METHODOLOGYThe survey research was conducted in February
until March 2020 and the results were collated in
March 2020
All known manufacturers of yard cranes were
contacted and asked to complete a questionnaire
giving details of their deliveries in 2019. They
were requested to separately identify RTGs,
e-RTGs, RMGs and ASCs. Some manufacturers
may not have separately identified RMGs and
ASCs and RTGs and eRTGs. The numbers shown in
this report reflect those reported by contributors.
Because PEMA is a trade association, some
specific rules apply with respect to reporting
data on individual company activity. This report
follows much the same format as in past years
and as was previously published in the trade
press, but without details on the supplying
manufacturer and the name of component
suppliers.
The survey was conducted by Brian Robinson, an
independent container and transport consultant.
Mr. Robinson has been the author of the surveys
published in the trade press for the past several
years and he is able to use historical data to
provide valuable trend information.
CONFIDENTIALITYMr. Robinson signed a confidentiality agreement
with PEMA stating that individual company data
would not be released by him to any other party,
including any officer or member of PEMA, except
in fully consolidated and aggregated form.
Furthermore, the release of any and all data
must comply with criteria established by outside
counsel and all source data will be destroyed within
six months of the survey results being released.
SURVEY DISTRIBUTIONThe consolidated survey results will be released
to PEMA members and to all contributors to the
survey immediately upon publication. At a later
date the report will be made available in the
public domain.
DISCLAIMERThis survey is based on information provided
directly by the equipment manufacturers. Data
have not been independently verified. PEMA and
the author cannot accept responsibility for the
accuracy of the data provided. This document
does not constitute professional advice, nor is it an
exhaustive summary of the information available
on the subject matter to which it refers.
Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the
information, but neither the author, PEMA nor
any member company is responsible for any loss,
damage, costs or expenses incurred, whether
or not in negligence, arising from reliance on or
interpretation of the data.

0706 Final Report 2019 Yard Container Crane Deliveries| Yard Crane Deliveries in 2019Executive Summary | Final Report 2019 Yard Container Crane Deliveries
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2019 there were 670 Yard Crane deliveries
compared with 636 in 2018. There were 526 RTG
deliveries and 144 RMGs compared with 393
RTG and 243 RMG in 2018.
The 34% increase in RTG deliveries compared
with 2018 occurred with increases in every
geographic region with the exception of China
and Australia Pacific.
Conversly RMG deliveries were down 40% from
243 in 2018 to 144 in 2019. The biggest decline
occuring in Other Asia (which for the purposes
of this report is Asia with the exception of China)
where 5 RMGs were delivered in 2019 compared
with 79 in 2018
Note: ASCs are included in RMGs in the numbers
above.
Manufacturers were asked to specifically iden-
tify Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASCs). There
were a total 68 ASCs reported deliveries in 2019
compared with 124 in 2018. Deliveries were
to Europe, North America, Mid East and Africa
(Morocco).
Manufacturers were again also asked to identify
eRTGs. It may be that some did not, but of the
526 RTGs reported 53 cranes were identified as
eRTGs,
Important note:- It is possible that the number
of ASCs and eRTGs is understated because some
manufacturers did not identify ASCs in their RMG
numbers or eRTGs in the RTG totals.
2. YARD CRANE
Twelve (12) manufacturers were contacted and
asked for details of their 2019 deliveries. All of
these have supplied cranes over recent years.
The 12 manufacturers contacted were:
• Baltkran
• Hyundai Samho
• Kalmar
• Kocks Krane
• Konecranes
• Kuenz
• Liebherr
• Sumitomo Heavy Industry / Mitsubishi Heavy
Industry
• Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding
• Sany Marine Heavy Industry
• Mitsubishi Loginext (Merging of Unicarriers
and Nichiyu Mitsubishi)
• ZPMC
Note: - Paceco Espana withdrew from port
crane manufacturing in 2018.
- Terex merged with Konecranes in 2017

Notes:
1 | ASC = Automated stacking crane RMG = rail mounted gantry crane RTG = rubber tyred gantry crane
eRTG = electrified rubber tyred gantry crane
2 | Some manufacturers express crane height and span in terms of number of containers rather than
as an absolute measurement.
There maybe a variance between suppliers, but the following conversion may be useful.
Lift height (m) Equivalent in one over x containers
12.3 1 over 3 (3+1)
15.3 1 over 4 (4+1)
18.1 1 over 5 (5+1)
21.0 1 over 6 (6+1)
Gantry span (m) Equivalent in rows + truck lane
20.8 5+1
23.6 6+1
26.5 7+1
