This is all the rage now.
But the importance for me with the technology is that it serves people who have never used the internet.

A New FoundationThe President arrived facing an unprecedented array of challenges, and is
meeting them with a bold, comprehensive plan. He passed the most ambitious
recovery package in history to address the economic crisis. He is reimagining
government to be more open, transparent, and accountable. And he is

A lack of communication can be a major barrier for grassroots non-
governmental organisations (NGOs) working in developing countries.
FrontlineSMS is the first text messaging system created exclusively with
this problem in mind.
By leveraging basic tools already available to most NGOs — computers and
mobile phones — FrontlineSMS enables instantaneous two-way
communication on a large scale. It’s easy to implement, simple to
operate, and best of all, the software is free. You just pay for the
messages you send in the normal way.
FRONTLINESMS ALLOWS YOU TO TEXT
MESSAGE WITH LARGE GROUPS OF
PEOPLE ANYWHERE THERE IS A MOBILE
SIGNAL.
“We want people to know that if they are trying to rig the election,
there could be someone behind them and that person may send a
text message saying what happened.”
— Emauwa Nelson, Human Emancipation Lead Project, Nigeria
“Based in Africa in a country where broadcast technology is
controlled by a dictatorial government, this software has enabled
me to communicate with the public at large. I am able to run my
project without drawing unnecessary attention to myself—a good
thing in this neck of the woods.”
