    !!

We are on time, prepared, and always ready to work.

We make the best music possible at all times.

We strive to become strong and competent performers.

We conduct ourselves with class in everything we do.

We spread a positive, loyal, and optimistic attitude toward the bands, music department,

    and university.

We are givers, and not takers.

As an institution of higher learning, Marian University strives to offer excellent teaching in

every aspect of moral, ethical, and spiritual guidance as well as academic and artistic

leadership. As musicians, we must be relentless in our pursuit of mastery, and yet humble in

the eyes of our brothers and sisters.

Music brings us together as brothers and sisters with an unconditional

    respect for that bond.

Every performer must contribute his or her best effort. Every

individuals contribution is critical to the success of the group.

We are called to be examples in our lives and in the quality of

    performance that we give.

Leadership is showing, not telling. Be a giver and not a taker.

Do your job with excellence and without excuses.

    !

    1. The Marian University Band takes pride in its first class behavior. Represent Marianpositively. Never do anything that would reflect negatively on Marian University or the

    Marian Band.

    2. The Marian University Band has a tradition and reputation of friendliness andpoliteness, not only to the general public, but also to other bands in particular. Please

do everything possible to preserve this tradition.

    3. Beware of mob psychology. People will sometimes do rude, crude, or destructivethings when they are part of a large group that they would never consider doing as

individuals. Dont be influenced by this tendency. The only difference between a band

and a mob is what they do!

    1. When you are in your band role, you are the image of the university and the band.No one will say John Smith used profanity in the stands. They will say, A Marian

band member used profanity. Remember when in your band role that you are a

band member FIRST, and an individual SECOND.

    2. We play and cheer for our team . Watch the game and know what is going onso that you can anticipate what we will do next. Everyone in the band section should

cheer as well as you play.

    3. At the game, we are professional entertainers during the entire event. You must beON the entire time. Pay attention. Play the first note of every tune.

    4. No one is allowed to sit in the band section except band members. The show must goon, and if you must visit with someone, you should briefly move to the aisle so that

you do not interfere with the performance. This should be an infrequent occurrence.

    1. In the Steffen Music Center, St. Vincent Health Field (stadium), and the PracticeField, there is a place for everything keep everything in its place.

    2. Any instrument that is not transported in the Trailer should be transported to andfrom rehearsal in its case.

    3. We start rehearsal the same way every dayfull-speed AT the listed rehearsal time.We do not start with announcements or get equipment out at 3:30. Be there on time, with your equipment out and ready to move 100mph.

    !!

Band members are expected to be at all rehearsals and performances on time. We start full-

speed AT the listed time. The following attendance and grading procedures have been set

up by the directors along with input from student leaders in the band.

    1. An excuse form must be filled out in the band office for ANY absence if you want it tobe excused.

    2. Attendance will be taken at the field. Any student who is tardy may be counted asabsent and an excuse form must be filled out in the band office.

    3. All absences for the previous week will be posted on Mondays. You have until 4:45on Friday of that week to file your excuse form in the band office, or the absence will

    be considered as unexcused.

    1. Pre-arranged AbsenceAll requests to be excused from band functions should be submitted on an absence

form in advance of the missed function. Any absence not pre-arranged and not due

to illness/emergency will be considered as unexcused.

    2. Illness/Emergency AbsenceIf a function is missed due to illness or emergency, submit an absence form for the

function that was missed along with documentation of the illness or emergency. A

doctors note or note from the health center must accompany the absence form for it

    to be considered as excused.

Before approaching the band directors with a conflict, students should make every

effort to resolve conflicts using the following guidelines:

    1. Students who are music majors may not have any scheduled conflicts with bandrehearsals or performances. If this is your major, you need to be here, period.

    2. Band students who are not music majors are allowed to work through 1 class conflictper week (can miss 1 of 3 rehearsals) if the conflict is with a class that is required for

    their major.

    3. Class conflicts must be approved and documented in advance.4. Conflicts with activities that are not related to a students major field of study are not

allowed, unless that activity provides the student with a scholarship that is larger

than the music scholarship they receive.

Grades are calculated as a combination of attendance and participation (see course

    syllabus for detailed explanation).

    1. A students grade for the course will be lowered by one letter for each unexcusedabsence from rehearsal.

    2. Two unexcused absences from rehearsal will result in removal from the performancecast.

    3. Lack of preparation for rehearsal will be recorded as one tardy.4. Two tardies will be recorded as one unexcused absence.5. Unexcused absence from a performance will result in dismissal from the band

    program.

    1. ALL band members are required to attend any post-season game, playoff game, orbowl game as an extension of the season. This includes playoff or championship

games which may occur after the conclusion of the academic semester.

    2. Failure to plan for and attend post-season band commitments and performances willresult in dismissal from the band program.

    16/24

    !!

    1. There will be a rehearsal prior to all Saturday performances. Saturday rehearsals willbe warm-up and run-through oriented.

    2. A student who misses part of a Saturday rehearsal will not perform that part of theshow that day, no matter what the excuse may be.

    3. Only illness/emergency are excusable from Saturday rehearsals and performances. No pre-arranged excuses will be granted.

    1. Music to be performed must be memorized.2. Each student must pass off (play from memory) music before Saturday morning

rehearsal of the weeks performance. Students may pass off music to one of the

instructors or to another student who has already passed off music to an instructor.3. If a student does not pass off the music, the student will not perform and will receive

an unexcused absence, lowering the semester grade by one letter.

    1. Every musician must have music in a flip folder.2. Your flip folder must be with you at every rehearsal and performance.3. Use of the flip folder improves the bands efficiency and leads to better

performances.4. Use of the flip folder gives us the flexibility to march while learning new music.5. Use of the flip folder allows us to learn drill with the music in front of us, and have

constant access to the music during visual rehearsals.

    6. Last but not least, we play A LOT of music. Over time you will easily memorize manyof the tunes, but in order to memorize them correctly, you have to have the music in

    front of you!

    !!

    1. Trips are an extension of the classroom. Conduct yourself in an exemplary manner atall times, just like you would any other day.

    2. Some of our bus drivers have driven the band for many years. They are great friendsand supporters of the University and the band. Treat them with courtesy and respect.

    3. On Bus 1, the first three seats on both sides are reserved for directors, staff, guests, etc.

    4. Respect the privacy of others on the bus. If you want to listen to music, bringearphones. If people are trying to sleep, be quiet. If you are trying to sleep, be

courteous when asking others around you to quiet down.

    5. Because the band is bigger than you, our buses will depart on time. This applies to every stop on every trip, and not just the departure

time from campus. If you miss the bus, you are responsible for getting to thedestination on your own at your own expense. If you miss the bus and miss a

performance, your absence will be recorded as unexcused (see Attendance and

    Grading).

    6. When the bus stops, remain on the bus until you receive instructions of what to do.7. Uniforms must be transported in the garment bag. Be sure to take the ENTIRE

uniform with you, including shoes, long socks, gloves, and cap.

    THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

    1. The band is an emotional group. There will be ups and downs.2. The band will not change as much as you will while you are in it.3. Practice doesnt make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.4. Its never as bad as it seems. Its never as good as it seems.5. People tend to spread gossip more quickly than the truth.6. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.7. Never confuse activity with accomplishment.8. There are problems and there are inconveniences. Most things are inconveniences.9. Rehearse at the level you want to perform and you will perform at the level you have

    rehearsed.

10.Never confuse activity with accomplishment. If you take an axe to the forest andhit every tree once, you have accomplished nothing.
