Psychiatrist DoctorPsychiatrists treat many different kinds of problems. Some of the most common are depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and addictions. Other problems include schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Schizophrenics may suffer from paranoia, delusions, or hallucinations. People with obsessive-compulsive disorder feel compelled to perform time-consuming and disruptive rituals like washing their hands constantly or repeating certain phrases.

Job description Psychiatrists are specially trained doctors who diagnose and treat people with mental, emotional disorders and diagnose problems such as depression, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. I chose this career because I think its really cool to help people, and also psychiatry is really hard but in the long run worth it.

Working Conditions Work for general or psychiatric hospitals, clinics, and research centers. Some psychiatrists are self-employed. Some work closely with family doctors, social workers, and nurses. They work 60 hours a week, and may be on call when not working. The work can be stressful and emotionally draining

EducationYou need to complete a bachelor’s degree(4 years) and medical school(4 years). It is not uncommon for people to apply to medical school 2 years in a row before being accepted. While in medical school, you concentrate your electives on psychiatry. After completing medical school, you are a doctor, but you still have to do a period of on-the-job training called a residency. The residency period for psychiatrists is usually 4 years. At the end of your residency, you have to pass a licensing exam to practice psychiatry in your state. Some psychiatrists choose to specialize in a sub-field, such as child and adolescent psychiatry or forensic psychiatry. Specialization requires an additional 1 to 2 years of training.
