Th e Advanced Voice Configurat ion page is divided into threesections:

    VAD Configuration

    Miscellaneous Configuration

    Timer Configuration

VAD Config ura tionVAD (Voice Activity Detection) is a telephon y function th attransmits audio signals only when you are speaking. This reducesbandwidth usage during calls. When the device notices that you arenot speaking, it can send an indication to the far end to generate alittle background n oise. Withou t th is, the p erson you are talkingwith will hear dead silence, and may think the connection has been

broken. Comfort noise and SID are methods of providingbackground noise.

    Entry Explanation

    Enable VAD withComfort Noise

Click to use VAD and add a familiar degree ofbackground noise during silence on the line.

    Enable VAD withStandard SID

Click to use VAD and to insert SIDs (SilenceInsertion Descriptors) during silence on the line.

    Enable VAD andSuppress Noise

Click to use VAD without inserting SIDs duringsilence on the line.

Disable VAD This option is selected by default.

Hook Flash Max Time The default is 1000 milliseconds (one second). Ifa hook flash (pressing the button on the phones

receiver or cradle) is longer than the unit of timeentered here, the X5v or V3 will interpret it as anon hook event (not in use). This function is tied toCall Waiting.

    Debounce ON OFFTime

Minimum time to detect that phone is off hook (inuse)

    Debounce OFF ONTime

Minimum time to detect a hook flash (pressing thehook button on the phones receiver or cradle).

    Timer Config ura tion

In the following fields the unit of time is seconds.

    Entry Explanation

Predial Timer The interval of time the unit waits for someone tostart dialing after the phone has been taken offhook (in use). After this interval, the unit sendsROH (Receiver Off Hook) notification. The defaultis 16.

Call Progress Timer The interval between the time a caller places acall and the time the connection is terminated ifno one answers the call. The default is 60.

Alert Timer The interval between the time a call rings at theX5v or V3 users location and the time theconnection is terminated if the user does notanswer the call. The default is 60.

Call Waiting Timer The period of time during which the call waitingtone will be played at intervals to alert the userthat a call is waiting. The default is 40 seconds.

Disconnect Timer The interval of time between when a callee

terminates a call and when the X5v or V3 userhears a fast-busy tone. The default is 10.

CallFwdNoAnsTimer The interval of time that will elapse before a call isforwarded if call forwarding on no answer isenabled. Note: Each ring takes about 5-6seconds, so if, for example, you wanted calls tobe forwarded after four rings, you would enter 20-24 seconds. The default is 30.

Ringback Timer The interval of time that will elapse between whenthe X5v or V3 places a call and when theconnection is terminated if no one answers thecall. The default is 60.

    1.3 Modifying the Dial Plan

The X5v or V3s dial plan is defined by the dial plan string, whichencodes a comp lete set o f dial plan rules.

Each rule defines behavior for a particular dialing pattern. A dialingrule, or pattern, can define something like international dialing, local dialing, or dialing that invokes a service, like call forwarding. The n umber of rules is limited on ly by the string maximum o f 512characters, and the rules can appear in any order. Rules areseparated by a vertical bar ( | ). In the table below the letter y isused to indicate any possible D TMF character. Each rule is createdfrom elements in the fo llowing table:

Dia l Pla n Rule Elem ents

    Service code(optional)

servicecode:yyy; Rules that apply to a service (see theService Definitions list below) startwith a service code and associate acode string (yyy) with the servicecode. A colon (:) separates theservicecode from the code string.

    DTMFcharacters

    0123456789ABCD*#

Valid DTMF characters in a callpattern are the digits 0 through 9, theletters A through D, and the * and #characters.

Ranges [y-y] Any of a group of characters withinsquare brackets ([ ])matches thepattern. A dash () indicates a rangeof digits. A range can be part of a

    group: e.g., [1357] matches 1, 3, 5,6 or 7.

    Any numericdigit

X X or x signifies any of the digits [09].

    Any digit but 0or 1

N N or n signifies any of the digits [29].

Timeout ty The character following t specifiesthe timeout interval in secondsfollowing the preceding event. Theletters a through z are used torepresent 10 through 35.

Repeat Digit .y To match a character or rangerepeatedly, follow the character orrange with . and a character thatspecifies the number of repetitions, from 1 to 16 (the letters a through fare used to represent 10 through 16).

Exclude Digit !digit/range An exclamation point followed by adigit or a range specifies digits thatare disallowed at this position in thepattern. Disallowed digits result in nomatch with the pattern.

Suffix digit >y The DTMF digit following the >character is the suffix characterassociated with this pattern. Thecharacters appearing before the >represent the minimum number ofcharacters to qualify as a match forthis pattern.

If the dial plan string is left empty, a default dial pattern to acceptall dialed d igits will be incorp orated

    This rule specifies the following:

It is a rule for a normal call (not associated with a service).

The dial pattern must begin with the digits 1393.

1393 is followed by 5 digits each in th e range [0-9].

The ID T allowed between the digits 1393 and th e 5 digitsfollowing it is 9 seconds.

The suffix character is # .

The m inimum numb er of digits needed to validate the rule is 9(the four digits 1393 + 5 Xs).

Before the 9 digits are entered, if the user presses the suffixcharacter # or if a timeout occurs, then it is consideredinvalid.

The last digit is in the range [0-9] and has an IDT of 2.

operator rule 0 is also com bined with this rule to reduce thenumb er of separate rules. Ho wever, this is don e at the cost of

allowing the minimum number of digits to be just 1, followingwhich incomplete num bers will be sent to the service provider ifthe user presses # , or after an ID T timeout. N ote the very long(15 seconds) IDT used to guard against this latter possibility.

    1Nx.2Nx.5tfxt2>#

This is a typical rule for domestic long distance dialing within theNANP:

The dial pattern m ust begin with a 1.

The second digit must be in the range [2-9] This is the firstdigit o f the area code.

This is followed by two digits in the range [09].

The next digit must be in the range [29]. This is the first digitof th e exchange.

The next 5 d igits must be in th e range [09].

E ach of the first 10 digits has an ID T of 15 seconds.

A final digit must be in the range [09].

The ID T for the final digit is 2 secon ds.

The suffix character is # .

The minimum n umber o f digits needed is 11, failing which thedialed digits do n ot m atch this pattern.

Unconditional Call forwarding rule. The service code that specifiesthe unconditional Call forwarding rule is 1. This rule specifies that:

*72 is the dial pad code to enable unconditional callforwarding. The ( ; ) character is th e delimiter specifying wherethe dial pad code ends.

The minimum number of digits is 3. *72 followed by the suffixwould do. (Dialing without the suffix would be impractical, since the IDT is specified as f, or 15 seconds.) If just the th reecharacters *72 are entered, the n umber to fo rward to will betaken from the entry in the relevant p age of the X5v or V3web page.

As an op tion, a forwarding num ber can be sp ecified. Up to 15digits are allowed.

Note: the above rule says the number specified can have digits in

the range [0-9] and can b e a max size of 15 digits. This is flexible, and we could have a call forward rule specified as

1:*72;>#[78]x.6t4. Here th e forwarding is don e only to anAcme number.

Th e abo ve are rules to temp orarily disable call waiting, call returnand blind transfer respectively. As noted, disable call waiting andcall return do not need a num ber to follow, whereas blind transferrequires a number to be dialed that specifies where the call shouldbe transferred. The transfer num ber must in this case be aminimum of 7 digits.

    AppendixVoice Over IP Phone

Installation OptionsYour X5v or V3 gateway makes it easy to make both VoIP callsover the Internet and regular phone calls using your standardphone service. Plug a telephone into the X5v o r V3s PHO N EPHONEPHONEPHONE

ja ck. When you dia l a reg ular pho ne number, you wi ll beconnected through the traditional phone network. W hen you

dial a VoIP number, your call will be routed over the Internet. You may want to connect additional phones to the X5v or V3so that you can make VoIP calls from other rooms. You have achoice of several ways to accomplish this without running wires.

Plug Multiple Phones Directly into the X5v or V3

Use Cordless Phones to Link to the X5v or V3

Install the X5v or V3 Where Your Phone Line Enters YourHome (USA O nly)

The first two wa ys are very easy and virtually foolproo f. Thethird requires a little more effort.

Plug Multiple Phones Directly into the X5v or V3If you want more than one phone near the X5v or V3in a smalloffice, for exampleyou can use stand ard telephone adapters toconn ect multiple pho nes. These adapters are called T -adapters or2-jack mod ular adapters; many peop le use them to plug in theiranswering machines. You can plug in as many phones as youd like.(If you plug multiple phones directly into the X5v or V3, just besure that when you add up all their Ringer Eq uivalence Num bers(RENs), the total is 5 or lower. Virtually all phones show the RENsomewhere. Most pho nes have a REN thats 1 or lower.)

Use Cord less Phones to Link to the X5v or V3If you have a cordless phone that has more than one handset,

simply plug the b ase station into th e X5v or V3 you can thenmake VoIP and regular calls using all the handsets.

Note: If you have a wireless network that operates over the typical2.4GH z frequency and you want to use cordless phon es, it is best if

you use 900MHz o r 5G H z ph ones; that way, you will minimize anychance of interference.

Install the X5v or V3 Where Your Phone LineEnters Your Home (USA Only)In m any homes, there is a telepho ne jack where the p hon e lineenters the h ouse. This box is called th e demarcation point. Itmarks the po int where the p hon e comp anys wiring ends and yourwiring b egins. This is an excellent place to install your X5v or V3and con nect it so that it pro vides VoIP capability to all the pho nesin your home.

There is a catch. To use the D SL line, you need to connect your

X5v or V3 gateway to the demarcation points jack and to either awired or wireless network. If you have a wired network, you simplyrun a network cable to the gateway as you would in a typicalinstallation scenario. If you dont have a wired network, pluggingthe gateway into an 802.11 wireless access po int is a fast, inexpensive, and convenient way to deliver your DSL connectionto one or more computers without running wires.

To co nnect your ph ones, follow these steps:

1111 Disconnect the modular plug at the demarcation point andplug it into the X5v or V3s jack marked PHONE .

2222 Then conn ect one end of the phone cord that came with the

X5v or V3 into its DSL jack and the other end into th e jack onthe demarcation point.

(If the demarcation point doesnt have a modular plug, you willneed to unwrap th e wire that is providing the co nnection. Trimthis wire and add an RJ-11 connector to it before you plug itinto the X5v or V3s PHONE jack.

Similarly, you will need to cut off the RJ-11 connector fromthe phone cord you use to connect the X5v or V3 DSL jack tothe d emarcation point. Strip th e two m iddle wires and insertthem where the original phon e line was connected in th edemarcation bo x.)

3333 With the com puters power off, check that your phon es worknormally.

Note: You shou ld add an answering machine to the X5v or V3 if

you want to install your d evice at the demarcation pointotherwise, regular PSTN calls will not get through whenyou are on a VoIP call. The answering machine must beinstalled in front of th e X5v or V3 that is, it must beconn ected to th e Telco (or D SL) line before it conn ects tothe X5v or V3. Callers will hear the phone ringing, but itwill not ring at your end.If you hoo k up an answering machine to the X5v or V3,PSTN callers can leave a message if they attempt to callwhile you are engaged in a Vo IP call.
