On the 1st of August, 2008200 postcards were given away in Novosibirsk Zoo to compile visitors’ observations on both animal reactions and their own.

Here are the 149 that were given back.

During the full solar eclipse, the bear was still. He was peaceful and lazy, often eating. After the full solar eclipse he become active, he was walking from one side to another and then become again paceful and lazy. He went to his corner in his cage and stayed to rest.

Because it’s little!


Before the eclipse it ate its meal heartily. When the eclipse started it hid in its shelter. In the middle of the eclipse it came out shortly but then hid again and didn’t come out.

Then walked a little, lay down, got up again and was standing open-mouthed. Then lay, got up and started walking.

During the eclipse the little bear hid in his shelter. The big one was rushing about the cage and started looking for a place to hide. Later nothing changed. They kept acting like that.

When the eclipse started the bear started walking about the cage uneasily. Then he got up and went to his little home. He stayed there for 10 minutes. When the sun was half-hidden he came out and then went away again.

It got dark and he went to sleep. Then he was fed. When it got completely dark he sat down and had been sitting for 3 minutes. Then he jumped up and started running around the cage as if he was mad. After that he went to his home.

At the start it was windy. Then it got dark and on the sun there was moon with a shining circle around it. That’s a very rare event. The weather was as if before a thunderstorm.

I chose LIGER to watch. Firstly, because it is a nice and rare animal. And secondly, because I like cats. Besides watching the liger I could watch lions at the same time.


During the eclipse liger was sitting but more often it was lying down. It yawned and stretched itself a lot. At times it ran from one part of his cage to another.

I chose this animal because it’s interesting and funny.


During the eclipse it hid in a corner and was sitting there motionless. Sad and sorrowful. One of them put its hands up and was looking at what was going on. At the full phase of the eclipse they all shrank together and looked around sadly.

It was a little scary that the sun would be gone for ever. But it’s a very rare and interesting event and I am happy I had a chance to watch it. Sun was hiding little-by-little, there was cold wind and it felt like evening. When the son was completely gone I felt as if it was night.

Indian Marten is a very interesting and lively animal. They are very unpredictable and interesting to look after.


At first it ran around the cage fast and making cracking sounds. Then it was sitting still making those sounds. For a moment it sat still and then fell asleep. When the eclipse was full, it woke up and started running.

During the eclipse I felt normal and better even, because unusual things attract me and I like everything that goes out of the routine. Basically the animals acted as they usually do. But when the sun was fully hidden they thought it was night. The marten woke up as soon as it got dark.

The Indian Marten was in a place where I could see the phases of the eclipse very well.


Almost from the moment the eclipse started the marten (in the left cage) got a little nervous and tried to get comfor-table to go to bed. When the sun was ¼ (or even less) gone it was already sleeping its legs hanging down. Sometimes however it yaw-

ned. When birds got loud it woke up but then went back to sleep. It did the same when disturbed in other ways. When the sun was back the marten started moving little-by-little and turning around. (When it was dark it was dead asleep). When the sun was 2/3 back it woke up and started licking and scratching itself. And then jumped down to the ground and started walking about the cage.

It is doubtful that my feelings were caused by biological reasons. It was most likely just interest towards this rare event. I will wait for the full phase and maybe something will change.

No, nothing. Only curiosity and the feeling that all what’s going on is a little surreal. The light during the full phase was very unusual, even fantastic.

It’s friendly and always open for communication, vivid and just beautiful.


When the sun was partly hidden the animal acted as usual – ran joyfully, hung on the rods and coaxed food out of people. It makes cracking sounds and runs around the cage. Runs around the cage uneasily. Climbed the upper log and licked itself. Came down and is running. When the sun turned sickle it climbed up, licked itself. 17:35 For the third time went up. Playing with its tail, rolling around. 17:45 Sleeping.

Lies down and gets up. 17:00 Stays on the ground, its head down and doesn’t move, breathes heavily. Gets ready to sleep. The second marten acts nervously. It sat on the stump, looked around, lay down and is breathing heavily. The sun is ½ hidden – the sleepy marten is whirling on the stump.

They are active: eat bananas, swing on the bars. At first the gibbon wanted to go indoors but they lay on the window. Then kept lying pressing himself to the bars. He was very excited and it seemed to me that he was frightened.

This animal is the most active one among those in the card.


During the first phase:Was running around the cage then stopped by the door and was waiting for someone to let him in. The he calmed down and went to the center of the cage. Then went back to the door again.

During the total eclipse:Hid in the corner pressing himself to the bars by the exit. Ran around the cage snatching at the ceiling. Returned to the door. Pressed himself into the corner. He was clearly scared. Another one came and sat next to the first one. They are sitting there pressing themselves to each other. When the sun showed up they started running around and swinging.

I didn’t notice any specific sensations. There only was this psychological factor that made an impact on everyone. There was mass rush and sputter about this coming event because it’s so rare. People were screaming in excite-

The rest of the time they were sitting together in the corner. The second gibbon jumped around at times. During the total eclipse they were jumping about the cage.
