Many rumen microorganisms can use ammonia as a source of nitrogen for growth, providing host animals with their microbial proteins.Most of ammonia are captured by the ruminant bacteria mainly from the amino acid deamination and non-protein ammonia compound hydrolysis. Urea is widely used as a com-mon source of NPN in ruminants, however urea is rapidly degraded in the rumen due to the action of urease. In this way,the ammonia supply produced may exceed the ability of rumen bacteria to convert it to bacterial proteins. Thus, the rapid release of ammonia may result in a low utilization rate of rumen ammonia, which increases the risk of ammonia poisoning at the meantime..
