The skin barrier function weaken with the age. The stratum corneum is the most important for skin barrier function, which is composed of corneocyte and lamellar structured intercellular lipids. 1)

The disturbance of lamellar structure of intercellular lipid is main reason of the weakness of skin barrier function, resulted in sensitive and dry skin, make accelerate the skin ageing.

The lamellar structure show very characteristic “Maltese cross” texture under cross polarized microscope. Maltese cross was the symbol of Christian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller. 2)
