INTRODUCTION TO ETHERNET

Ethernet is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LAN). It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the Physical Layer of the OSI networking model. Ethernet is standardized as IEEE 802.3.

HISTORY OF ETHERNET

Ethernet was developed at Xerox PARC between 1973 and 1975. It was inspired by ALOHAnet. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) first published the 802.3 standard as a draft in 1983 and as a standard in 1985.

EVOLUTION OF ETHERNET

Evolutions have included higher bandwidth, improved media access control methods, and changes to the physical medium. The coaxial cable was replaced with point-to-point links connected by Ethernet repeaters or switches to reduce installation costs, increase reliability, and enable point-to-point management and troubleshooting.

EVOLUTION OF OVM

The verification of Ethernet is done by a step by step process called OVC by OVM. In the late 50’s we used only transistors to build up the circuit but without any kind of verification. As the technology started evolving the complexity of the circuits increased due to which step by step verification and stimulation of the system became a necessity. In 2007 Cadence and Mentor Graphics combined to produce OVM.
