Insp. Huw Jones
Are you being garden wise ?During the warmer weather residents will be spendingan increasing amount of money looking after theirgardens. Whether its new garden furniture or a newBBQ residents should always be vigilant and takeextra precautions by securing everything away.
Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector for Rhymney,Inspector Huw Jones has the following summer Gardenwise advice:
SHEDS AND OTHER SMALL BUILDINGS- Take steps and ensure that your shed is sound and in good condition checkingboth its fabric and appearance.- Once the fabric of a building is sound you can then improve physical security:Fit a good lock on the shed door, the padlock itself should be of the 'close shackle' type, made of hardened steel, fit an alarm and fit all windowswith a grille- When you are satisfied that your building is secure, USE the locks at all times.
PROPERTYDon't make it easy to steal them and remember that tools stolen from your shedcould be used to burgle your house.- Post Code all property- Take photographs of any valuable garden ornaments- Never leave items unattended, especially valuable ones
ALLOTMENTSAllotments are harder to protect but much of the above advice can be applied tothem.- Get to know your neighbours on the allotment- Remember - don't leave expensive equipment on site if you can avoid it
GARAGESEnsure the structure is sound and in good condition, especially timbers aroundthe doors and any windows.- Up and over doors should be fitted with an additional lock to the one provided- Keep timber doors well maintained, hinges secured by bolts and locked by goodquality mortice locks- Separate pedestrian access doors should be of solid construction and fitted witha good quality 5 lever mortice lock- Main garage doors should be internally secured with at least 1 key operated lock- Windows should be treated in a similar way to those of sheds- Fit a small space alarm or, if possible, include your garage on your house alarm

Balloons Away...
Balloon Release and Fun Day, Musicand Sponsored Commando Crawl
On Sunday 22nd May residents andtheir families gathered on the hillsabove Fochriw for a balloon release. Itwas organised by the United ValleysAction Group who wanted to highlighthow far the pollution from the proposedCovanta incinerator would travel. Thecrowd of 200-plus were first treated toa performance by the Rhymney Silurian Male Choir, who sang rousing Welsh songs. Then 1000 red balloons werereleased, and quickly disappeared in the winds high over the RhymneyValley and out of sight.
Each balloon was biodegradable and had a tag attached asking the finder tocontact the group, to discover where the balloons would travel to.
After the balloon release families enjoyed a fun-day in Pontlottyn, to raise funds for the campaign. Activities such as face-painting, nail art and a bouncy castlekept the children happy. There were stalls selling t-shirts, food and delicioushome-made cakes. On the same day Pontlottyn held a Rock Against Incinerationmusic festival with many live bands performing in three venues, raising around£1000 for the campaign. At the same time, two local friends John Archer–Brownand James Joseph did a sponsored commando crawl, wearing gas masks andarmy clothes. The two-mile crawl from Rhymney to Pontlottyn took them 2 ½hours and they raised £330 along the way.
The balloons were also sponsored for £1 each and the group have had manyreplies from the South-East of England where the balloons landed around fourhours later –Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Enfield, Uxbridge, Hertfordshire,Essex, London and Kent. One balloon even interrupted a cricket match in Londonand was collected by the umpire!
The day was a great success, raising both awareness and vital funds for thecampaign. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part.
By Joanna England, UVAG Press Team.

Written by Cory Macarthur. You have nothing to do, nowhere to go. You can’t go out because it’s raining. The skies are miserable and so are you. You’re fed up. You could be like thekids outside, wandering around under the streetlights in the rain, searching forsomething to occupy their time. Their hoods are up, but the rain seeps throughanyway. They have their cans of cider – It’s what makes them feel big. Maybeit numbs the boredom. You could be like them, only you aren’t. You don’tbelong in their group, you’re not sure you want to.There’s school the next day – a chore, obviously. You get up and glance out ofthe window. Rain again, surprise! You drag yourself onto the school bus andfrom the moment you arrive, you’re counting down the hours until home time. The teachers shout at you and your classmates laugh. School isn’t where youwant to be, you feel like you don’t belong there, either. English, Geography,Break. Maths, Science, Dinner. History, home. Some people call the big cities their home, loosing themselves amongst thehustle and bustle. Others see home as remote mountain top houses, with aview that stretches over the landscape, but not another soul in sight. But yourhome is the Rhymney Valley. And on some days, you notice just how lucky you are. It’s friendly. It seems like everybody knows you – the community is soclose that walking down the street, you’re greeted by most people you pass.Whether it’s a quick glance and a smile from across the road, a “how are yourparents?” or a “how is school going?”, you know that here, you’re welcome. This is your life, this is where you’ve grown up.You realise everything the valley has to offer, everything you’ve been missingout on. There’s no need to stay at home bored, or wander the streets in thedarkness. So many opportunities come rushing to you now, that you don’t know where to start. You could call a friend and go for a kick-about on the footballfield. Have a walk to the library and see what’s new. Go cycling along the bikepath. Join in an activity at the sports centre. What about the local events? You’ve always felt trapped here. But you appreciate now that you’re a part of thevalley. You’re part of a community, and it’s where you belong.
Life in the Valleys Through the Eyes of a Minor.!

A little bird told me there is something new in your neighbourhood ... OWL is launched in Bargoed and Rhymney!
Residents in Bargoed and Rhymney are being encouraged to join andset up local Neighbourhood Watch schemes via a new online service, called OWL (Online Watch Link).
There are over 900 Neighbourhood Watch schemes now set up inGwent which equates to close to 4000 households. The online systemwas successfully piloted in Monmouthshire from October of last year.
With OWL, each Watch can manage themselves online with easy touse management and communication tools and allows users tochoose the best format to receive messages- via phone, email, faxand text which can be sent to individual addresses, streets, watches, areas, wards, towns or watch schemes. When residents sign up toOWL they automatically become members of their localNeighbourhood Watch and can choose to sign up as a member orbecome a co-ordinator for their street. Residents should log onfrequently to www.owl.co.uk to gain the most benefit from theinitiative.
Other benefits of the system include a "Fix my Street" application thatallows watch members to easily report problems such as brokenstreet lights to local councils, the most recent reports submitted totheir council are displayed with a map showing the exact location ofthe problem. The system compliments and builds on existing crimemaps provided by Gwent Police using the latest official crime data toprovide a visual comparison of crime across districts putting localdata into context. Lists of local contacts that may be required after anincident are also listed on the website.
Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector for Bargoed and Rhymney,Huw Jones says: "The new OWL system will undoubtedly make ourcommunication with Neighbourhood Watch members more efficient. The Bargoed and Rhymney Neighbourhood teams have beenextremely busy this month in the new mobile police station promotingOWL - we've had a huge response so far. Neighbourhood Watch hasalways been a valuable ally in our drive to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and I encourage people to join and help us maketheir communities even safer.

Some advantages of being part of Neighbourhood Watch and receivingmessages via OWL are:* Acts as a deterrent to burglars, car thieves and unscrupulous door to door callers.* Neighbours watching out for one another and working together to report suspicious activity.* More direct communication from the police about local incidents.* Advice on improving your own home security.* Support from your local Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator and your community police officer. As you live in a registered Watch area we would like to invite you toregister on OWL. Please log onto www.owl.co.uk for more information. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact BargoedNeighbourhood Policing Team on 02920 857 455 orRhymney Neighbourhood Policing Team on 01495 233 961.
