June 2, 2016 Dear Friends and Supporters, We want to welcome you all to this celebration of YouthBridge-NY’s Fellows, graduating Bridgers and honorees. YouthBridge-NY creates opportunities for its diverse young leaders to learn about each other and appreciate our city’s diversity. Through the fellowship, these leaders grow and understand how they can solve problems together, making our city, and its communities, a better place for all. Tonight we also honor those who have made significant contributions of their time, talent and treasure to ensure that YouthBridge-NY continues to play a pivotal role in our city’s present and future. We wish to thank John Samuelsen, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, and Jon Del Giorno for being part of making this evening such a tremendous success. Thank you for being partners in this important effort to empower and inspire YouthBridge-NY’s young leaders. It is only through these partnerships and your support that this important work can continue. And finally, thank you to the dedicated members of the board of directors, and the YouthBridge-NY staff. We look forward to a continued relationship with all of you in the work and mission of YouthBridge-NY. Yours truly, Mohammad Razvi Bob Kaplan Chair Founding Director YouthBridge-NY Board of Directors YouthBridge-NY

YouthBridge-NY is a nonprofit leadership development organization that convenes and trains young people to meet the challenges of an increasingly diverse New York City. Since 1997, YouthBridge-NY youth leaders have been proactively involved in enhancing the leadership and diversity landscape of our city and are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all. The YouthBridge-NY Fellowship is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors. First-year Fellows participate in monthly skill building workshops and specialized action committees focused on either grant-giving, diversity through photography, or an internship to understand diversity in the workplace. After a year of acquiring important leadership skills and experiencing diversity learning, second-year Bridgers are given the opportunity to further enhance and hone these skills. Bridgers meet monthly to learn about community organizing, building social media campaigns, and diversity and opportunities in college. In addition, Fellows and Bridgers participate in an orientation summer retreat, special meetings with corporate and city leaders, build friendships with peers from all five-boroughs, and much more.

Honoree

John Samuelsen

Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award

John Samuelsen is a tireless advocate for union workers and their families to become full participants in the American dream. As the elected Executive Vice President of the Transport Workers Union of America and President of the 42,000 member Local 100 in NYC, it is John’s passion and life mission to advocate for union workers.

Working for the New York City Transit Authority more than 23 years ago, John witnessed first-hand the unsafe working conditions facing subway workers. Participating in the fight back on worker safety marked the start of John’s life in organized labor, a rewarding path over which he has advanced from shop steward to the highest level of union leadership.

A man of family and faith, John grew up in Brooklyn and continues to reside in Borough of Churches with his wife, Lisa, and their three children.

Honoree

Khalil Gibran Muhammad

Distinguished Thought Leader Award

Khalil Gibran Muhammad is at the forefront of scholarship on the enduring link between race and crime as it shapes and limits opportunities for African Americans. He has created opportunities for understanding and growth by educating the public through a different perspective. Khalil embodies the values of YouthBridge- NY with his leadership studying, writing about and creating a platform for addressing issues of race and diversity. He is a visiting professor at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research division of the New York Public Library. Khalil will be stepping down as his role as Schomburg director on July 1 to join the tenured faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School in the fall. Khalil is the author of the award-winning The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America (Harvard). It won the John Hope Franklin award in 2011 for its lengthy discussion of the role of social sciences in shaping and sanctifying racial “data.” Khalil is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his unwavering commitment to opening and continuing an honest, complex conversation about the African Diaspora and race relations in American history.

Honoree

Jon R. Del Giorno

Community Service Award

Jon R. Del Giorno embodies the value of caring for others. As a passionate advocate he dedicated his life to ensure extraordinary support for community initiatives for the LGBTQ and the developmentally disabled communities as well as many other groups that share our city. He works tirelessly as a volunteer and board member to support underprivileged communities and diverse populations. Jon serves on the Board of Directors at Stonewall Community Development Corporation, where he has helped bring diverse leadership and raise initial seed money to build this organization, whose goal is to provide LGBTQ seniors with supportive, affordable and safe housing options as they age. Additionally, Jon volunteers with the New York State Institute on Disability, Inc., which funds activities enabling families with developmentally disabled family members to attend sporting, entertainment and cultural activities. Jon is the founding member of Pitta Bishop Del Giorno & Giblin LLC., where he manages the firm’s New York City consulting and government relations practice. With more than 20 years legal and government relations experience, he oversees direct government and legislative advocacy on behalf of the firm’s corporate, not-for-profit, small business, trade associations and labor organizations.

Cultural Eye Committee: Fellows work with a professional photographer and staff to understand and capture the many facets of diversity in NYC. Fellows take pictures of themselves, their friends, their cultures, and their communities. Throughout the process they look at the world in a different way. Fellows create an end-of-year exhibit and sell their work.
