The word “missional” has been bantered about for the last several years by denominations and local con-gregations. It’s a word I’ve heard used repeatedly at the General Assembly, in various meetings of our Regional Church as well as by leaders of local congregations.

Some say it is simply a shift from a “program ori-ented” emphasis to a “people-centered” emphasis with-in the local congregation. Others say that “missional” means living life as a missionary, literally “witnessing” through thought and action the teachings of Jesus. And still others say it goes deeper and that to be “missional” means re-directing one’s entire life to a new understand-ing of the Christian faith.

In his book, Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard for the Church, Reggie McNeal says – “To think and to live missionally means seeing all life as a way to be engaged with the mission of God in the world.” A missional individual “thinks about God and the world” and arranges their entire life to reflect their understandings of Jesus’ teachings.

The interesting thing is while McNeal has written an entire book about being “missional,” I could not find a dictionary that actually defined the word. Every dic-tionary I opened defined “mission” but did not move from a “mission” to being “missional.” But even with only McNeal’s definition to go on, we know that a cur-sory understanding of “missional” is transforming the Church and individuals as well.

We saw an example of that this past Sunday when the youth of our church (some of whom are pictured at the bottom of the opposite page) led the morning and evening services of worship and hosted a panel dis-cussion during the Meet and Greet. These were high school and middle school youth who had participated in mission trips this past summer. These mission trips not only changed their lives in very positive ways but also caused them to reflect on how they will live the remainder of their lives as followers of Jesus.

The high school students shared stories from the Tennyson Center for Children and their week of shared ministry to the children of the Center. Each one of them came home inspired to live life to the very full-est and to make helping others one of the primary pri-orities of their lives. The middle school students shared experiences and reactions from their nine local mission sites. When asked if they wanted to repeat their mission trip experience there was nothing but affirmation and enthusiasm.

We are raising a truly “missional” group of young people within our church family. These youth, middle school and high school, are not only the “church of the future,” but also they are the church of today. They can’t wait to share their stories of what happened on their mission trips and the difference it made in their lives. And they can’t wait until next year. Those who are old enough want to travel to Denver and the Tennyson Center. Others are anxious to travel to Houston and help with the recovery there. Our younger youth are looking forward to returning to the nursing homes, the soup kitchens, to Operation Gratitude and the other mission sites that welcomed them this year.

There is an old movement within the churches that

For those of you who know someone serving in the armed forces, as well as people serving in other capacities, we want to lift them up in prayer... please let us know when they come home!

We also want to continue to pray for peace, for wisdom for the world’s leaders, and for the people of all war-torn areas of our world.

is gaining new strength, new momentum and new un-derstanding. It is no longer enough to just “send” mis-sionaries out into the world and it is no longer enough to simply “send” our offerings to Disciple Mission Fund. We must now “be” the missionaries and “invest” our offerings in Christ-centered, other-centered, min-istry-centered work that we do together, both here and elsewhere.

I know, without any doubt, that the youth we heard last Sunday, those who spoke in church and on the panel, and those who served at the Meet and Greet, are learning first-hand what it means to live a missional life. And as they learn they are teaching all of us.

I look forward to seeing you in church Sunday. Bill Hayes and I are going to have some fun looking at Ezekiel. And as always, in both services, the music will be fantastic.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give wayand the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the moun-

tains quake with their surging...The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (Psalm 46)

Dear Disciple Brothers and Sisters, As most of you know, two nights ago in Las

Vegas, we experienced the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States. We offer our deepest prayers and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this senseless attack. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy and we reaf-firm, as people of faith, our commitment to a peace-ful and compassionate world and to our God who is our refuge and strength.

We have been in contact with Rev. Steve Willis, pastor of FCC Las Vegas, and no one from their congregation was directly affected. However, friends and others were, as well as the whole of the Las Vegas community. We pray for our Pastors and churches as they offer care and compassion to their community. The long-term effects of this terrible tragedy are yet to be fully known, but our continued prayers are des-perately needed.

We also know, that our wider world has been rocked by recent hurricanes that have devastat-ed Puerto Rico, as well as damage done in Texas,

Louisiana and Florida, a 7.1 earthquake that hit Mexico causing massive destruction, deaths and in-jury and serious flooding in Southeast Asia. These and other crises challenge us as faithful people in the midst of climate changes, to offer prayers and sup-port for our sisters and brothers who are reeling from the affects of these natural disasters.

Already our Regional Board made the unani-mous decision to designate $50,000 to our General Church’s disaster relief arm, Week of Compassion, to go toward hurricane relief efforts. However, our concern and support does not end there. On a per-sonal note, our Disciples of Christ denomination has a seminary, 160 churches, and 21,000 Disciple mem-bers in Puerto Rico who are deeply affected as well. The effects of the natural disasters will be a long time in recovery and our continued prayers and support are requested.

Blessings,Revs. Don and Susan Dewey

I had forgotten. It’s been so long. It feels like a life-time ago. Those troubled teen years! I know. Everybody had them. But some of us were more challenged than others.

My challenges overwhelmed me. I ended up in a day treatment program here in Los Angeles, at a facil-ity similar to the Tennyson Center. There I received an education, therapy, and Prozac. I will always be grateful to the people who cared for my mental and emotional needs during that time. They gave me the tools I needed to survive.

Unlike the Tennyson Center, the facility I was in was not faith-based. They did not attend to my spiritual needs. During those dark days, I desperately needed the light that could only come from God. I didn’t real-ize then that God was still with me. I felt very much alone.

Communion has always been my favorite part of church. I am never alone at this table. I can feel God’s presence here – through His body and His blood. It is a powerful and touching reminder that God is a part of me.

God is a part of us.

8 October 2017 - Aliza Ramos, ElderIt’s that time again! Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) Group III is preparing for our next Jewelry Sale, on November 12th. Hopefully you will take some time and clear out that “jewelry I’ll never wear” drawer and bring it to the church in the next couple of weeks so that we can prepare it for our sale. We have space for all “new” donations and we need your help in getting them.

Please place your unbroken jewelry in a baggie and place it in the Narthex CWF basket or give it to Marta Carroll, Linda Wolf, Sue Williams or any other Group III member as soon as possible.

Time is short so please sort through your jewelry and bring us what you can. When we receive it, we place it in a small bag and price it, bring it out for our sales, and watch all the happy faces that have found gifts for Christmas and we have made money for CWF!

Thank you again for your constant support of the Christian Women’s Fellowship projects.
