The Fall Team has arranged something
very special for the first Monthly Social of
the new season. If you like
the ocean and you like
history, don't miss this event.
Gene Peterson is an
experienced wreck diver and
deep sea explorer, and has
logged over 4800 wreck
dives off the North Atlantic from Florida to
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He has a
teaching degree from Rowan University,
and is a member of the prestigious National
Association of Underwater Instructors. Gene
has been teaching diving since 1976, and
has received honors from the New Jersey
Council of Dive Clubs and from the
National Association of Underwater
instructors for his 35 years of dedication to
safe wreck diver training. Since 1981, Gene
has led and experienced over 8 expeditions
to the Andrea Doria including the first
wreck exploration and on to the 50th
Anniversary dive of her sinking. He has led
over 30 expeditions to Nova Scotia and
numerous wreck discovery adventures off
the Delmarva coast. Over two dozen
adventure books and numerous magazine
articles have documented Gene's
expeditions and discoveries. Gene will
present a fascinating review of some of his
four decades of wreck diving adventures.
Having recovered thousands of shipwreck
artifacts, including bells, helms, binnacles,
telegraphs, china, deadeyes and portholes,
he will take you on an adventure discussing
some of his recoveries. He will also have
some of these artifacts on display.
Check the posting in this newsletter for the
special food program for this Social plus
some alternative driving routes to the
Bellmawr VFW.
South Jersey’s Own “Jacques Cousteau”
By Tom Cusack
WHAT’S IN THE BAG… by Tom Cusack
On a beautiful Sunday
afternoon in late September,
there were 5 carloads of
Fanfifty members roaming
South Jersey on the
Fanfifties First Annual
Scavenger Hunt, hosted by
Linda and her assistants, Barbara and
Harriet. At 3 PM, everyone met in Toscano
Restaurant’s parking lot on Route 70 in
Cherry Hill (remarkably everyone was on
time!). Each car was given a list of 50 items
to find somewhere and a bag to put them in,
and they had to get them back to the parking
lot within 2 hours. The team with the most
items would win first prize. Then we would
all have dinner at Toscano’s.
You won’t believe some of the 50 items
on the list that the teams had to find. How
about a paper placemat with the logo of a
diner on it; fuzzy dice (like we hung from
the car mirrors back in the day); a store bag
with the store’s logo on it; a silver dollar
coin (who has one of them?); an old
fashioned skeleton key (What??); a job
application (most are online .. now what?);
and my favorite … an unused popcorn bag
from a movie theatre.
I was the driver in one of the cars. When
I went into the Marlton 8 Theatre, the only
way to get to the popcorn counter was to
buy a ticket, and I wasn’t about to do that.
So I told the person collecting tickets that I
was not going to see a movie, and that I just
wanted to get a bag from the popcorn
counter. She was very nice and replied:
“Oh .. you must be on the Scavenger Hunt
… no problem .. just go to the counter.”
That’s when I knew my car was not the only
team of Fanfifties that visited this theatre.

Meeting/Social 6 PM
Bellmawr $10
All inclusive (food & beverage)
This is a unique presentation of the
adventures and
treasures in the
oceans right

Jersey shore,
presented by Gene Peterson, a noted (Continued on page 3)

deep sea diver and explorer.
For this particular Social, the $10
includes admission, pizza, salad, and
soft drinks from the bar. You can
BYOB if you wish or buy drinks from
the VFW. Take a night off from
bringing your food contribution for the
buffet … this month everything is
included.
Something to consider when traveling
to the Bellmawr VFW is that Route 295
traffic is often backed up during the
timeframe you are trying to get to the
hall. This is especially frustrating for
the folks traveling south from the
Cherry Hill, Burlington County areas.
Consider alternate routes such as the NJ
Turnpike, from Exit 4 or 5 depending
on where you live, get off at Exit 3 and
you are a couple of blocks away from
the hall. Take the exit onto Route 168
going towards Bellmawr, turn left at the
first light at Wendy’s (Benigno Blvd),
turn right on the second street (Lowell)
and go up two blocks to the hall. Also
consider Kings Highway Route 41
through Haddonfield, turning left onto
Warwick Road to Little Gloucester
Road and turning right; a couple of
miles on this road and you are at the
hall (1st left after the Route 168 traffic
light).

WHAT’S IN THE BAG… continued from Page 1 We thought our car was really doing well and ahead of
schedule, but the next thing we knew, we were out of time.
We just made it back to Toscano’s with less than 5 minutes
to spare. We were the last car to return … everyone else was
already there. The dynamic trio of Linda, Barbara, and
Harriet checked each team’s bag holding the collection of
Scavenger Hunt goodies to determine the winner. More on
that later.
Then we all had dinner in Toscano’s. The conversation
flowed (so did the wine!) and the funny stories about how
each car found some of these goofy items were a blast. After
dinner, Linda announced the results and surprisingly, two
teams were tied with 49 items retrieved. The tiebreaker was
really neat … the first person on these two teams to produce
a AAA card would win the Hunt. In no time, Peggy
produced her AAA card and her team was proclaimed the
winner … Eva, Marie, Loretta, Tom, and of course Peggy
won the day and the prizes.
This was a really different and enjoyable event … and it is
always a good time to have dinner with a bunch of Fanfifties.
Our appreciation to Linda, Barbara, and Harriet for creating
and planning a fun afternoon that everyone enjoyed and
appreciated.

Our Club—A Quick View
When we started this club in October
of 2000, our goal was to provide
interesting social activities for people
over 50 years of age.
Since that time we’ve sponsored
thousands of activities from free concerts
in local parks to trips to Hong Kong.
While not intended to be a partnership
meeting place, many of us have found
lasting friendships. We’ve noticed that
the more involved you are, the more
satisfying the friendships become. As
you might expect, we’ve seen our share
of marriages as well.
Some other events include dance
parties at local clubs, pinochle games,
Kimmel Center concerts, dinners, trips
and special interest groups like
photography and birding.
We have no limit as to what adventure
might be sponsored. Belonging is lots of
fun. Lonely nights tend to disappear.
We provide descriptions of events and
current information by way of a monthly
newsletter, a web site and a weekly
email. We email special changes as
needed.
The basis of our club is members
hosting events for other members. That is
what keeps the club vibrant and moving
forward. So think of something you
would like to do or attend, and host it as
a club event. We need your
participation.
