Processes

GTAW / TIG orbital welding process

Main advantages of TIG with or without wire CW/HW compared to other processes: all position use, excellent surface quality, clean without spatters... Zero defects. Generally, orbital welding technique covers two main fi elds of application:

• Tube-to-tube / pipe-to-pipe joining.• Tube-to-tubesheet welding.

Electrode 1 1 1

Wire / CW HW - DC or AC

Arc type Single arc Single arc Single arc

Deposition rate / 0.15 to 0.5 kg/h 1 kg/h

or

Whenever high quality results are required, orbital welding is the fi rst choice for the joining of tubes. The welding torch - in most cases, the TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas) process is used - travels around the tubes to be joined, guided by a mechanical system. The name orbital welding comes from the circular movement of the welding tool around the workpiece.

- Minimum I.D. 10.2 mm (standard) / 6.5 mm (special) - The values are given for a "N" gas lens with an electrode stick-out of 9 mm for recessed tubes, 7 mm

for fl ush tubes, 10 mm for low protuding tubes (5 mm) and 13 mm for high protruding tubes (< 13 mm). - In case of preparations requiring an adjustment of the diameter close to the max. rotating diameter

of the electrode, you must turn the tool before you start the welding cycle in order to move the torch away from the supporting feet (striking risk)

- The minimum distance between tubes is given for protruding tubes without preparation. For distances between tubes with preparation, the width of this preparation has to be added to the value mentioned in the table.

- Dimensions are given for information only, and allow to evaluate the required space.

Recommendations: For protruding tubes, the torch angle depends on the thickness of the tube and the gap between tubes. The smaller the gap between the tubes, the smaller the angle of the torch (for similar protruding tubes) in order to avoid any interference during welding between the torch and wire, and adjacent tubes.

For thin wall pipes (1.6 mm – 2 mm), preference will be given to a 15° angle rather than to a 30° angle in order to reduce the risk of BURN THROUGH inside the tube. For fl ush tubes, it is better to use a 0° angle or 5° angle. The tables include standard values. Adjustments are possible for borderline cases.
