“The Lord’s Prayer.” But do we really know “HOW to pray”? The disciples did not ask Jesus for a “prayer”, but rather to be taught how to pray. Perhaps this prayer that we know as the “Our Father” is actually a formula for “how to pray.” Throughout the Gospels, we often find Jesus going off alone to pray to the Father for guidance. Prayer is a way for us to communicate with God. It is a way for God to let us know His will by speaking to us in the quiet of our hearts. But how do we pray? Do we ask for healing of the sick, food for the hungry, help for the needy? Or do we ask God to make us happy, or healthy, or wealthy? Perhaps we barter with God - if you let me win the lottery, I will donate a portion of my winnings to the poor. If we look closely at the form of prayer that Jesus taught His disciples, we will see that it is not about changing God or God’s will. It is about changing us, that is, being open to, recognizing, and accepting God’s will. Probably our hardest part of prayer is being open to God’s will. Because of our human nature, we want to be in control. We want to believe that we know what is best for ourselves. Losing that control makes us feel vulnerable. So we pray to God asking for a preconceived solution to our needs and concerns. But if we are not open to doing God’s will, we may fail to recognize or respond to an opportunity to continue His work. And since God does not force His will upon us, our free will, at times, causes us to make the wrong choice. However, if we have a solid and open prayer life - a solid and open relationship with God, He will continue to provide us with other opportunities and choices. As the concluding parables to this Sunday’s Gospel tell us, if we are persistent with our requests, God will provide us with the “good gifts.” The gifts that HE knows are the true answers to our prayers, the gifts that hopefully we will accept. Spend some time this week slowly and thoughtfully reading today’s Gospel. What word or phrase resonates with you? What situation in your life might that word (or phrase) speak to? What is God asking you to do?
