NE1 Ltd has unveiled its plans for the multi-million pound redevelopment of the Bigg Market.

The plans - which it is hoped will be supported by £1.6m from the Heritage Lottery Fund plus match funding from NE1 Ltd, Newcastle City Council and property owners totalling £2.9m - include levelling the street to create four terraced areas to create multi-functional outdoor spaces, and the project follows the success of the Central Station redevelopment in 2015. newcastlene1ltd.com

LYNNE ROBSON, 65 FENHAM, RETIRED“It’s excellent - well worth the visit. Newcastle is such an amazing city

for people to come and visit, and the rest of the gallery is free, which is terrific. It’s so important for Newcastle to have things like this. I come here all the time and never get bored of the Laing.”

notebooks up close – it feels really personal. These are his ideas, rather than finished pieces, it’s incredible to see in Newcastle.”

ADAM JOHNSON 24, SHOTTON COLLIERY, STUDENT“I really enjoyed it. Although these aren’t his most

famous pieces of work, they’re still stunning. To see Leonardo Da Vinci written on the side of the Laing can only be good for the city.”

Thinking out loud

Comedian Lee Kyle shares his favourite part of Newcastle

Whenever I gig in Newcastle with a comic who hasn’t been to the city before, I tell them they should go and see the best thing in Newcastle - the shoe tree.

If you haven’t been, it’s in Heaton Park. It’s a tree, obviously, and loads of people have thrown shoes into it. Hence the name.

It’s both beautiful and ugly, a bit like Newcastle itself. A pair of my red trainers are up there. One day, Newcastle city council cleared the tree, deeming it an eyesore, but within weeks there were more shoes up there than ever before. People power is real, people!

The tree is quite full now, the shoes have spread to other trees. Maybe one day there will be an entire shoe forest there. And visiting comedians still won’t bother to visit it.Lee Kyle: The Original Show Title Was Too Long, The Stand, April 3, thestand.co.uk

Canadian comic Katherine Ryan’s new tour - Kathbum - promises inspired impersonations and cut-throat observations. Here are some of the many reasons why we love her...

She loves taking a pop at the world of celebrity, especially reality telly stars. “It’s an amazing world. They get fat on TV shows where they’re paid to get drunk and fight, then they lose weight so they can flog a DVD and fashion line. It’s a puppet show and people don’t seem to notice,” she says.

She’s a well-known feminist now, but as a student she endured a stint as a scantily clad waitress at a branch of Hooters restaurant chain. “I wouldn’t recommend it now, but I learnt a lot,” she says. “I like to fit in, so I was a cheerleader with orange skin and white-blonde hair.”

When she was growing up, her computer analyst mum was her big comedy influence. “I saw her playing the role of beautiful blonde wife but then saying things at a dinner party that would confuse everyone. I loved that.”

Her impressions are brilliant, and they don’t stop at her subjects’ voices - check out her take on Nicki Minaj’s Starships in the 2013 final of Let’s Dance for Comic Relief.

Her karaoke song is the brilliant Shoop by Salt-N-Pepa, which is enjoying a bit of a renaissance now after its appearance in the hit superhero flick Deadpool. “I’m actually a pretty good rapper,” she says of her version of the song. “And it was a feminist song before there were many. I love it.”

She’s well worth a follow on Twitter (@Kathbum) for her razor-sharp responses to some of the weirder tweets she receives (and which we can’t repeat here).

She also doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her. “I mean it when I say I couldn’t give a f**k. I’m so lucky because I really just don’t care. I am aware that my life is awesome. I’m not living in Gaza.”Tyne Theatre & Opera House, April 16 from £15, tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

For an exhibition with a difference, be drawn to David Hockney’s prints at Gallagher & Turner’s new gallery space at St Mary’s Place.

The ‘psychological strangeness’, as Hockney sees it, of stories by the brothers Grimm inspires the work in the exhibition, which is entitled Six Tales From The Brothers Grimm.

All the texture, tone and depth you’d expect from Hockney’s versatile talent is on display, with the dreamlike and fantastical elements that make his work so beguiling.Gallagher & Turner, gallagherandturner.co.uk

When (if) the British summer kicks in, the city’s green spaces are ideal for a relaxing afternoon. Take a stroll around the lake in Leazes Park, or take to Exhibition Park’s skate park or croquet lawn.

Meanwhile, local wildlife of a different sort parades around Old Eldon Square and its lawn, which is perfect for catching some rays.

History buffs love Newcastle’s enviable architecture. Take in the stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, from the Grade I-listed splendour of the Theatre Royal on Grey Street, to the quirky delights of the so-called ‘vampire rabbit’ perched atop the ornate rear door of St Nicholas Cathedral. For a real taste of the history of the city, take a tour accompanied by the free Hidden Newcastle smartphone app, which is loaded with fascinating stories.

The old saying ‘the best things in life are free’ may not always ring true (until wine falls from the sky, we won’t believe it anyway), but there are plenty of activities and places to visit in town that don’t cost you a bean. Try these...

If the weather’s not on your side, there’s lots to be discovered at the many museums and galleries. Whether it’s dinosaurs at Great North Museum: Hancock, world-class art at Laing Art Gallery, Vane Gallery and BALTIC, or family-friendly fun at Discovery Museum there’s something for all tastes, and they’re all free.

The city’s a shopper’s paradise, and it costs nothing to wander the atmospheric lanes of the Grainger Market. On Sundays, the historic Quayside Market is crammed with food, crafts and more.

If it’s a night out that’s on the cards, free live music is rife in the city, though we do recommend you buy a drink. Enjoy all manner of performers at Newcastle Arms on Mondays, open mic nights at Trillians rock bar every Wednesday and acoustic music at The Duke of Wellington on Thursdays.

How about learning a new skill for free? Newcastle’s Mindful Therapies centre based in Broadacre House offers meditation drop-ins and Mindful Space events. Fancy making some noise? Tyneside Irish Centre can teach you old-style Irish set dancing or you can join in a keep fit ceilidh.

If you’re feeling energetic, head down to the NE1 Fitness Station on the Quayside for a free workout.

Alternatively, Newcastle’s art deco gem Tyneside Cinema offers regular free guided tours, and there are regular screenings in the Bar Café.

Come summer proper, NE1 will have more ways for you to get out and about on the cheap, including the free NE1 Quayside Seaside, NE1 Monument Movies showing throughout the summer holidays on the big open-air screen, and NE1 table tennis tables throughout the city.

DANCEDANCE

Matthew Bourne’s exquisite re-telling of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty heads to Theatre Royal April 5-16, bringing with it the trademark choreographic innovation and production which has made Bourne one of the greatest names in world of contemporary theatre.

First performed in 2012 and choreographed by Bourne, the third of Tchaikovsky’s ballet masterworks reimagined by his groundbreaking dance company New Adventures retells Perrault’s timeless fairy tale with music from Tchaikovsky’s 1890 ballet.

The production begins in 1890 with Aurora’s christening at the height of the fin-de-siecle when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination. As Aurora grows into a young woman, the ballet moves to the Edwardian era and its golden age of long summer afternoons, croquet and new dance crazes. Then, awakening from her slumber, Aurora finds herself in the modern day - a world far more mysterious than any fairy story. Unmissable.Theatre Royal, April 5-16, from £17 theatreroyal.co.uk
