Yoga & Ayurveda: Preventative Lifestyle Medicine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease.” The Yogaspirit® team believes that the key to physical, mental, and social well-being can be found within the worlds’ oldest and best documented healthcare systems known as Yoga and Ayurveda. The intention of Yoga and Ayurveda is to treat the mind and body with preventative lifestyle medicine adapted to the specific needs of each individual. All treatments are considered complimentary to modern medicine, however Yoga and Ayurveda work well at identifying and treating the root cause level of disease before there is even a symptom. In our modern world, Yoga and Ayurveda recognize the benefit of working alongside western medicine traditions for a complete wellness healthcare model.

Program Overview Yogaspirit® Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Certification Both Ayurveda and Yoga understand that all disease is rooted in the mind. It is written in the yoga sutras and even in the Astanga Hridayam’s very first Ayurvedic sloka:

"Ragadi Rogan Satatanu Shaktan Ashesha Kaya Prasrutana Seshan Autsukya Moha Aratidanjadhan

Yo apurva Vaidyaya Namostu Tasmaihi”

Homage be to that Pioneer Physician who eliminated the entire diseases such as Raga (desires/attachment), whichever shadows life, which are integral parts of living beings, and which are

causes for Autsukya (anxiety), Moha (confusion), and Arati (restlessness)"

Upon completion, graduates will be able to:

Gain competency in structural assessments & therapeutic treatment protocols

Offer preventative Ayurvedic assessment& lifestyle counseling

Apply emotional healing techniques to modify habits that address root cause imbalances

Be prepared to establish your private clinical practice

Testimonial “Through working with Yogaspirit® Studios in the Yoga Therapy program, I have been able to hone my skills in assessing body mechanics, emotional and physical imbalances, and use a variety of tools and techniques to enrich my client's lives. The Yogaspirit® techniques are invaluable to the yoga therapist and allow you to tap in to your intuition and true nature as a healer."

Healing works by transforming physical pain and emotional or mental suffering that comes from a deeply rooted sense of incompleteness and separation within mind, body and spiritual consciousness. To bring about wholeness and healing, various Yogaspirit® Mind/Body Therapies including active listening, guided self-inquiry, mantra, spiritual exercises and life guidance are used to liberate your life to bring balance and happiness.

The intention of Yogaspirit® Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist program places special emphasis on understanding how the mind influences the body and how clients' attitudes, habits and tendencies aid or hinder in the healing process. Our Therapists are trained to consider each client's state of consciousness, their willing, thinking and feeling faculties and to provide Vedic counseling to support their healing process.

The primary philosophical foundation lies in understanding that each person has within them the innate intelligence to heal. This innate intelligence is part of the same consciousness that binds us to the natural world and connects us in harmony with each other. We are either aligned to this innate faculty of healing and can restore natural functioning to the mind/body/spirit system or we are separated from it causing greater imbalances to one’s Constitution which in turn starts the process of disease to the bodily tissues.

Understanding Ayurveda & Yoga for Healing Together, Yoga and Ayurveda act as sister sciences, which are the overall key to striking equilibrium between one’s health and wellbeing. Yoga (union) and Ayurveda (science of life) are two of the world's oldest holistic (whole mind-body) healing sister sciences which treat the entire person. Although developed 5,000 years ago in India, these evidence-based healing methods are vital and even more relevant for the modern age.

Based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit, the primary focus of Yoga & Ayurveda is to promote healing through education and wellness practices, rather than focusing on treating the disease. However, Yoga & Ayurveda treatments and techniques may be recommended for specific health problems where disease has already manifested.

To better understand the treatments and techniques, it is helpful to understand that Ayurveda & Yoga view the whole person. Each individual's layers (physical, physiological, emotional, mental and spiritual) from which life force (prana), governs all the functions of life. This force is further organized into five basic elements (earth, air, water, fire, ether) and finally into three constitutional categories otherwise known as dosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Once the constitutional makeup is understood, the Therapist can work to treat the imbalances within the context of the natural state of the constitution. In addition, Therapists are trained to know how to spot the "red flags" or early warning signs that can prevent disease.

Yoga and Ayurveda are rooted in Vedic Science and were not meant to be separate. The union and interconnectedness of these sister sciences is apparent at many levels, and most easily demonstrated by understanding the Principles of the Yoga's five Vayus and Ayurveda's five subdoshas of Vata. It is difficult to argue that they are different or separate because in fact, they are one in the same.

Scope of Practice Ayurvedic Yoga Therapists are trained to understand a client’s overall constitution while treating the imbalances and considering which methods, tools and techniques are best to use. Therapists are trained to begin with an analysis, medical history intake evaluation, observation of yoga postures, diet and lifestyle questionnaires which provide information during a client-centered practice where concerns about what may be affecting their health can be shared.

Yoga Therapy recommendations range to include diet, rest, lifestyle, yoga postures, breathing and meditation techniques, marma chikitsa (similar to acupressure), yogic mind/body techniques and pranic energy healing. Therapists are trained to provide full support on how to effectively implement routines that bring about lasting results.

Different forms of yoga & meditation may be more suitable for different dosha types and can be extremely useful for bringing balance into life. Therapists are trained in how to conduct structural assessments and can make treatment plans using postures that are modified to meet the needs of the client. Even if one is very inflexible or has a limited range of movement, poses are modified and variations are given for different limitations.

A series of formal evaluations will look at body mechanics, asymmetries or other limitations in various poses determine a practice plan. In addition, a health history is included to provide a holistic view of stress factors, breath, nervous system functioning, pain, and lifestyle considerations is reviewed. A written home practice treatment plan is provided at the follow-up appointment. Yogaspirit® techniques and recommendations to be implemented are specifically tailored to the individual's needs. Subsequent sessions track progress and allow for manual adjustments, instructional yoga poses and bodywork. Based on the treatment plan, these sessions include one-to-one assisted instruction and manual assistance working with the postures, breathing practice, mediation guidance, and relaxation techniques with a Therapist.

Therapists are trained to education clients about the Vedic teachings and how to have a lifestyle that is more in-tune with the nature's natural rhythm. There are routines for the cycles of the day, the month and the year. Clients are also educated on how to flow with the cycles of life more smoothly such as the process of aging and natural other changes. Therapists understand the role they have in the therapeutic relationship and are trained to support and guide the client toward health by understanding that when one begins to attune him or herself with natural rhythms and cycles, he or she may see dramatic shifts in overall well-being. Problems may seem to disappear or diminish; clients come to realize it was not a problem that existed, but simply that they were out of sync with nature and the body's natural rhythm. According to Ayurveda, food is medicine. Food and spices found in your kitchen are the first line of defense and provide the most effective means to help bring the body back into balance and support overall health. Nutrition is highly individualized in Ayurveda. What may be good for one person to eat may not be beneficial to another. Each person's unique constitution must be considered when putting together a meal plan, as well as the state of any imbalances he/she is experiencing. According to the individualized treatment plan, these sessions can include nutrition, meal planning, spice and herbal therapies, detoxification, purification protocols, and lifestyle balancing strategies.

Course Description The Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist (AYT) Program is rooted in the sister Vedic sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda on the premise that all disease is rooted in the mind creating patterns, tendencies and beliefs which separate one from awareness with Self. The way to health is through connecting identification with Self in alignment to the balance of mind, body and spirit. Students will gain the tools and skills necessary to restore and preserve health and prevent disease through lifestyle strategies, yoga techniques and education leading to a heightened state of consciousness and health. These skills include a comprehensive assessment of constitutional criteria supporting the unique needs of individuals. These needs are supported with yoga tools and techniques along with nutritional education, daily routines and practices to maximize health. These will give a clear understanding of one's thought processes and a balanced relationship to a state of health and one's true nature.

Student Leave of Absence Procedure

If a student feels he/she cannot complete the program due to medical reasons or personal problems, he/she should meet with the Director. If the Director suggests a leave of absence the student must fill out a Leave of Absence Form. During a leave of absence the student’s credit hours are maintained, and the student can return to the program without loss of credit. The student has two (2) years from the date submitted to return to the program. If the student does not return in two (2) years, the student will have to restart the program.

* Leave of Absence Form can be obtained through contacting Students Support Services.
